Penalty for behavior vs fine

To what end? The guy snapped a club over his knee. I disagree with you that it's all that bad.

I think asking for repercussions is over-reacting.

I do think snapping a club in half is unacceptable behavior. I can accept you don't feel that way and that you feel my questioning further penalty for that unacceptable behavior was overreacting. I'm ok with disagreeing.

I can see both sides of this topic.  To me when a player cusses, throws, or breaks their tools, not only are they a bit pissed for their personal failure, they are also putting on a show that adds a little comedy relief for the fans. In other words they are being entertaining. 

Some of us learned something when we were told we were not good enough to get mad when we tossed or broke a club. The difference is, these pro golfers are good enough to get mad. 

Better yet they are good enough to get mad, and come right back focused on their next shot.

Oh sorry...wasn't trying to ignore that. No, not a single moment of weakness, but I do think a repeated violent lack of self-control is a character flaw. And so while this was only a single instance today, my question was focused on establishing more strict consequences that would be more of a deterrent for that type of behavior since it is not something I think golf fosters.

It was such a "in the moment" type of thing that a monetary fine wouldn't really matter. Sure fine a player if they really get out of control but that very rarely happens.

I'm all good with players getting pissed and being done with it quickly. Rory didn't intend to break his club.

I don't think we need to penalize players for this type of behavior.  Breaking a club in no way reflects on that person's character.  Without the competitive juices flowing, golf wouldn't be entertaining to watch.

It's golf. It's hard at times and frustrating as heck even for the pros. I'd probably be tempted to snap a club if I could afford to. I can't so I don't, I settle for a quiet f bomb or some such vent

I don't want the PGA to become like the NFL with some demagogue deciding what behavior affects the "integrity of the game".

Let them show emotion. Vent it. Get it out of their system. They are under a great deal of competition stress. I'm certain that they hear it from their friends and family. Rory's Dad probably scolded him after breaking his 3 wood. Same with F-bombs caught on camera. I think it would be better if the network didn't show it, but they are a bit like little children and love to see it.

I agree with you, it is unacceptable behaviour. I don't think there should be an actual playing penalty for this type of conduct (i.e. shots being imposed on the player), but the fact they are fined, even if it's just loose change to men of their financial means, at least is a reminder that the behaviour is unacceptable.

As an aside, I do wonder how the conversations go in the sponsor's equipment van after these little incidents. I'm sure these precious superstars are far, far above reproach, but still.....smashing the sponsor's product in the venue of the televised major golf tournament? The very venue that justifies why the sponsor pays the player all that money. It would be a bit like seeing an Formula 1 driver kicking his car in the pits, shouting, "Never, ever, buy a piece of s**t Renault."

Maybe the IOC should ban Mcilroy from the Olympics as that type of behavior is becoming of an Olympian.

Im pretty sure the players get fined for salty behavior on the course. But assessing penally strokes? No way.
