My instructor was a touring pro who only picked up a club in high school. I don't know what happened to him, i.e., why he's now stuck dealing with schleps like me at the range, but it's certainly not impossible. There are many different tours you can compete in right? These guys are not deities by any means.

It happens in other forums, too.   I think it is a part of human nature.  I know one thing.   None of these OPs came back and posted that they made it.

OTOH, there are those who thrive on it, and is the main reason they post in the first place just to see the reaction.  Last time out, I was paired up with this guy who consistently drove in excess of 290, yet he was a very quiet, unassuming, individual playing from the whites. No boasting, just enjoying the day. I glanced at his score card and noticed he took copious notes/stats. I think he shot in the low 70's.

So I played Operation with my son last night and made it through without touching the sides.  I am thinking about becoming a Neuro Surgeon.  I am 6'5", 180 lbs, a Capricorn and I like long walks on the beach.

I think my chances are pretty good so if anyone needs some surgery, let me know and I will hook you up!

Sorry, I couldn't resist!

Am i correct in thinking there is no "official" hcp limit to turn pro, but the general guidline is low singles? I sure i've heard players with hcp of 4 turning pro.

You can just declare yourself a pro.

He did it as a player, too… not as an instructor.

Didn't know that.  Thanks!  Is that common?

Both threads still seem odd for first posts.

You have actually spotted the new feature Erik added that automates avatars for those who do not select one- using the first two characters in the name.

For what it's worth, I did a bit of sleuthing and in this case, evidence points to this being a real person, and who appears to have been quite sincere in his first post.

i hope he comes back and that we can have a decent dialogue with him.  Maybe he will be reasonable and hash it out with us and not turn it into a flame war.

I believe he said in his post that he realized we would think he is a troll so he likely has thick skin.

edit: oops  it's early and I'm on my phone. Missed that avatar thing was answered

Gentleman sorry for the 2 day absence after I posted, been out hunting every day since I can't golf with the weather here. As this was my first post ever on here I didn't think this was going to end up with 4 pages of comments in this time. I wasn't even sure I would get a response to be honest.

Next to the people who actually gave reasonable advice thank you for pointing me in the right direction. And thank you for the benefit of the doubt. Yes it's really possible because I'm certainly doing it.

To the rest of you I have no way to prove to you I started 6 months ago so I guess we're going to have to agree to disbelieve each other. I knew some people would not believe me when I posted it, because of how good I am but let me explain how I got to this point.

I started playing golf by complete accident the end of May, up until that point I hated golf and wanted nothing to do with it. Ended up going out to the course the first time because my dads truck wouldn't start. While waiting for a tow truck he grabbed a couple buckets of balls and we waited on the driving range. after about 5-10 min of hitting a driver on the range I was putting them to the back fence of the driving range in the air almost every time. I figured I might actually be good at this and decided to try playing a round with him. My first round ever was like 95 or 96 and from there I got addicted to the game. From that point I started spending 3-6 hours per day on the course playing 27-36 holes per day (unless I was on a time crunch) and hitting 2 buckets of balls per day on the range. (To answer the question that's undoubtedly just popped into your head, no I don't live in my moms basement unemployed. I just happened to be very lucky to be able to retire at 24 years old.) I have never had a lesson from a pro. For the most part it's all been trial and error, or on the issues I've had, I turn to me and my golf tv on YouTube and after watching the video go back to the course the next day and fix said issue. I'm highly athletic, I grew up playing hockey and baseball, so it's not like this is the first sport I've ever played. I'm very well aware I'm not ready to be a pro and I'm not ready to compete on a pro level. However with my immediate (and from your responses, unbelievable success) on the golf course I would like to try and chase the dream of professional golf. One last thing gents as the last comment says he probably has thick skin that is completely correct. my skins thicker than Rosie O'donnels silverware drawer.

i do thank you guys for your time and responses I never thought I would have gotten a response from so many of you.

Any chance you will be posting a video of your swing for curiosity sake?

I would be more than happy to I just don't know how or where. I tried to upload it to the bottom of my last reply but apparently it's over 5MGB or whatever the limit is.

@Golfingaddiction,

I hope you will excuse our disbelief. As you can imagine, we get a steady stream of people, some trolls and some people who actually believe they have what it takes, come on here with some pretty incredible claims. If you are an active member here and a cool guy, I think you will find that most of us here will support you no matter what your endeavor is. You will find on this site that people will be upfront and honest with you about your chances.

Cheers and I look forward to seeing your progress.

The best way is to upload to YouTube and then paste the link to embed the video.

First of all, welcome back.  Second, if you go to :

https://thesandtrap.com/forums/forum/13-member-swings/

and click the button to Reveal Hidden Contents, you'll find some information on how to post videos in that thread.  As I understand the current procedure, the best thing to do is to upload your video to YouTube and put the link into your post here to embed the video.

And last, congratulations on your progress so far, and good luck going forward.  Even though its unlikely you'll ever be able to make a living by playing golf, if you can afford to give it a try, go for it!

    • Day 470 - 2026-01-13 Got some work in while some players were using the sim, so I had to stick around. 🙂 Good thing too, since… I hadn't yet practiced today until about 6:45 tonight. 😛
    • That's not quite the same thing as what some people messaged me today.
    • Day 152 1-12 More reps bowing wrists in downswing. Still pausing at the top. Making sure to get to lead side and getting the ball to go left. Slow progress is better than no progress.
    • Yea, if I were to make a post arguing against the heat map concept, citing some recent robot testing would be my first point. The heat map concept is what I find interesting, more on that below. The robot testing I have looked at, including the one you linked, do discreet point testing then provide that discrete data in various forms. Which as you said is old as the hills, if you know of any other heat map concept type testing, I would be interested in links to that though! No, and I did say in my first post "if this heat map data is valid and reliable" meaning I have my reservations as well. Heck beyond reservations. I have some fairly strong suspicions there are flaws. But all I have are hunches and guesses, if anyone has data to share, I would be interested to see it.  My background is I quit golfing about 9 years ago and have been toying with the idea of returning. So far that has been limited to a dozen range sessions in late Summer through Fall when the range closed. Then primarily hitting foam balls indoors using a swing speed monitor as feedback. Between the range closing and the snow flying I did buy an R10 and hit a few balls into a backyard net. The heat map concept is a graphical representation of efficiency (smash factor) loss mapped onto the face of the club. As I understand it to make the representation agnostic to swing speed or other golfer specific swing characteristics. It is more a graphical tool not a data tool. The areas are labeled numerically in discrete 1% increments while the raw data is changing at ~0.0017%/mm and these changes are represented as subtle changes in color across those discrete areas. The only data we care about in terms of the heat map is the 1.3 to 1.24 SF loss and where was the strike location on the face - 16mm heal and 5mm low. From the video the SF loss is 4.6% looking up 16mm heal and 5mm low on the heat map it is on the edge of where the map changes from 3% loss to 4%. For that data point in the video, 16mm heal, 5mm low, 71.3 mph swing speed (reference was 71.4 mph), the distance loss was 7.2% or 9 yards, 125 reference distance down to 116. However, distance loss is not part of a heat map discussion. Distance loss will be specific to the golfers swing characteristics not the club. What I was trying to convey was that I do not have enough information to determine good or bad. Are the two systems referencing strike location the same? How accurate are the two systems in measuring even if they are referencing from the same location? What variation might have been introduced by the club delivery on the shot I picked vs the reference set of shots? However, based on the data I do have and making some assumptions and guesses the results seem ok, within reason, a good place to start from and possibly refine. I do not see what is wrong with 70mph 7 iron, although that is one of my other areas of questioning. The title of the video has slow swing speed in all caps, and it seems like the videos I watch define 7i slow, medium, and fast as 70, 80, and 90. The whole question of mid iron swing speed and the implications for a players game and equipment choices is of interest to me as (according to my swing speed meter) over my ~decade break I lost 30mph swing speed on mine.
    • Maxfli, Maltby, Golfworks, all under the Dicks/Golf Galaxy umbrella... it's all a bit confounding. Looking at the pictures, they all look very, very similar in their design. I suspect they're the same club, manufactured in the same factory in China, just with different badging.  The whacky pricing structure has soured me, so I'll just cool my heels a bit. The new Mizuno's will be available to test very soon. I'm in no rush.
