Kilts

In 2013 our group was in Scotland and it was arranged for us to wear rented formal kilt "suits" for our last dinner at Gleneagles (like renting a tux for the prom).  It was pretty cool wearing these wool tartan kilts with knee socks, vests, the little bag that hangs in front of the family jewels, etc...

As I have no Scottish or Irish heritage, it has always seemed inappropriate for me to go around in a kilt.  Still, I just may have to buy myself one if I get a chance to go back to Scotland.

I answered "No way" even though I am part Irish. A fat guy in a kilt just doesn't seem right.

As to the first point, yes, pretty darn small.  Here is a better one.  As to the 2nd point, no comment.

When my friend out here got married he and the groomsmen wore the whole getup. His wife is Scottish.

I had a Scottish friend, and when we travelled to Scotland for his son's wedding, it was "strongly suggested" that I should wear a kilt.  So we went off to the kilt-hire shop, got measured up, and picked up the outfit a few days later.  In addition to all the men in the wedding party, I'd guess that about a third of the men at the wedding and reception were in kilts, so I didn't feel at all "odd."  In the States, however, I'd really have no opportunity to wear a kilt, so while I might wish to have one as kind of a memento, I'll never buy one.  And them suckers are damn expensive!!

No, sorry, not going to happen. My hats off to those that choose to rock a kilt though.

I could consider plus fours on the course ......but that's completely different.

I recall seeing businessmen wearing kilts in Edinburgh.  One probably doesn't need game in Scotland to wear a kilt.  In the USA the typical hacker should avoid the outfit unless he/she has a decent Scottish brogue.

I don't own one, but I am in the possession of a faux one this year for coming in second in my league's annual weekend golf outing. It is basically a kilt-looking beach towel. I had to wear it for the trophy ceremony.

You needed a "it's never crossed my mind" option. At the price point I heard they were, at least in Scotland, I can do without.

Need an option for "No, but I'd wear one" - I have no reason to wear one here, so wouldn't buy one, but if in Scotland and there was a reason to wear one, I'd do it.

I have nothing against kilts, but there is no reason for me to wear one. There's also no reason I wouldn't wear one.

I have a MacGregor tartan kilt from many years in a Scottish Reserve regiment.  I was laughing at the fat guy comment.  I would have to let out and have VERRRY long belts and buckles to now enclose it around me.  They are expensive and a life long momento.  I have never worn anything under my kilt.  Got some cool updrafts in February I can tell you.  Makes you walk fast and funny.
