MyGolfSpy.com is reporting exclusively that the entire workforce at the Ft. Worth company has been laid off.

logo.png?__SQUARESPACE_CACHEVERSION=1483They conclude:

Sources tell MyGolfSpy that personnel reductions were discussed at a recent Board of Directors meeting, but nothing to this extent.

Other sources also tell MyGolfSpy that Hogan owes money to several media outlets and vendors, and has so for a while, which is always an indication of a struggling operation. Other sources report that Perry Ellis, the owner of the Hogan brand who licensed the name to the Ben Hogan Company, has had concerns over the current status of the golf equipment company.

Besides the obvious job losses, this is a huge downer for those who loved the idea of a restored brand and the irons that had been brought back in grand fashion.

wow, I hope there will be a more promising chapter coming.

i remember reading a little awhile back when Callaway bought out BH and took it out of production, but something about being able to capitalize on some of the iconic names such as "EDGE".  I may be a little sketchy on the details though as I really did not follow it further.  I do know that Jesse Ortiz is now working with The Bobby Jones Company. (I know, not the same thing, but this post reminds me of that also).

A company that makes really expensive clubs, that most people don't have the skill to hit, and have no retail presence, named after a golfer that most people under 70 have never seen play, don't know how that business plan could possibly fail!

Good point. Even Arnie and Jack didn't really make an impact on equipment and other than clothing, Tiger hasn't tried at all.

Really couldn't have summed it up any better.

I gamed the PTx irons for a while in 2016 and while they looked great they lacked feel and performance was very 'meh'.  For that price point I expected more but they simply didn't deliver.

This is too bad. They had some nice looking clubs; it would've helped if they were more readily available to consumers.

Hopefully it's more of 'furlough' than a shut-down. I liked their approach with the lofts vs. club numbers. Seemed to be good quality. If I didn't generally use the secondary market for my clubs, probably would have taken a close look.

Spent two hour-long sessions at PGA show 2016 hitting the Hogan stuff. I liked the feel, and the beveled/two-bounce V sole seemed to move through the ball pretty good. (but it was astroturf, not zoysia)

I think the newly launched PTx irons would be better for a player like me than the originals.

This reminds me of when MacGregor went to sleep, and came back - but largely as a Golfsmith brand. Which raises a related question... will Galaxy keep the MacGregor brand?

So, with Hogan on hiatus, will this give any momentum to Srixon, whose irons have the beveled/two bounce VT soles? The latest Cleveland wedges also have the V sole. (Srixon now owns Cleveland)

Yeah they're still around and saying they're restructuring, but things are probably not great.

I was surprised how many staff people they had at the PGA Show last time I was there in 2014.

They may have been hoping the economy would bump up a bit more by now, but the timing of the economic hit from the China stock market issues (possibly a delayed echo of the 2008-2009 U.S. housing / banking crisis) probably didn't help.

Seems like eponymous brands have gone the way of the Dodo.  My Denny Shute putter, Tommy Armour Silver Scot sand wedge, Frank Johnston model Dominion Special, Tony Penna 10 iron, and Hogan Special SI, are relics...not that they don't make it into the bag on certain occasions.  I am sad for the loss; but not so hide-bound that I don't recognize the advantages a pointy stick has over a plain, however cherished, cylindrical object.

In der bag:
Cleveland Hi-Bore driver, Maltby 5 wood, Maltby hybrid, Maltby irons and wedges (23 to 50) Vokey 59/07, Cleveland Niblick (LH-42), and a Maltby mallet putter.                                                                                                                                                 "When the going gets tough...it's tough to get going."

They sure didn't do much in the way of marketing.  I think I heard of this company two times.  Here on TST when they announced they were coming back with those degree labeled throwback clubs, and here on TST now when they announce their death.

This sort of thing relates to many endeavours, not only golf. One example would be Harley Davidson had significant problems back when for a short time they had the AMF ?  Harley. but came back stronger than before.

    • For someone with a very consistent swing speed and ball strike, upgrades may improve performance. For everyday golfers, probably not. I'm a rather odd player. I usually get best performance from basic pro or tour heads, but with lighter stock shaft from the model's standard driver set up. (Yes, current EXS is an exception.) When I get a full driver fitting, I usually try a couple of modest upgrade  (not super magic) shafts. Most of the time upgrade gives a couple of extra yards, or 10 yards less. Remember this about stock shafts: They are matched to a particular driver model to fit the type of player likely to adopt that model. Also, most OEMs offer a variety of stock shafts in their drivers. Test for which one works best. And, the final decider...
    • Uh, seeing you're having trouble with hit-and-miss performance from inherited clubs... Get Fitted! IF the 910H pair don't work, swap them out. Also, only two degrees separation in loft is not much. You might consider a 4W (much more reliable than a 3W) plus hybrid. This would give more distance separation than two Hs. For hybrid, get one you can hit... Maybe a more benevolent 4H. Quite often I try to brand match my bridge clubs (FWs and Hs), and my irons and wedges... but not always. Whatever works!
    • Like others have said, get fitted. Since 2011, I have played some combination of 4W + 7W. I had a Cobra 3H and 4H a couple of years back, and would swap out the 7W for a 3H in cold months (keep out of cold wind, and rough thinner for wayward drives.) The 7W matched up with yardage often with 3H; the current 4H goes almost as long as 7W, but has a lower trajectory. 4H also bumped out 4i in last bag redo; I learned to hit stinger with 4H so that's my driving iron on tight holes with shallow landing area. Again, a side-by-side test will tell you which way to go. If 5W or 3H is meh, keep the 7W. Also, are you looking to replace the 7W with a 5W or 3H, or add a second bridge club (5W or 3H) to your bag?
    • Makes sense and aligns with other literature. Static stretching, especially for longer durations, can impede performance in strength and power activities. I would not want to do like hamstring, quad, and calf stretches then go immediately sprint. To me that sounds like a terrible Idea. I would rather start off walking, then jogging, then running, then ramp up to sprinting.  To me, static stretching isn't even a warmup activity. I like the term warmup; you want to get some exertion going before the activity.      a { text-decoration: none; color: #464feb; } tr th, tr td { border: 1px solid #e6e6e6; } tr th { background-color: #f5f5f5; }
    • Going to Florida for the usual February golf trip, and with our current weather, that date won't get here soon enough. Heading to Augusta GA for the Tuesday Master's practice round, will definitely get some golf in while I'm in the area for a few days. Hope to be able to catch up with @coachjimsc if he's around. Then it's back to Scotland first of July.  Playing 7 new courses, can't wait for that.  Then somewhere after that is the Rhode Island CC Member-Guest and then my normal October golf trip to Myrtle Beach.
