R.I.P. Tom Petty

God bless, as if this day could not get any worse, Tom Petty passed.

Was way too soon.   He was one of the good ones.

Of all the things rumbling around in my head; this was not one of them.  He left a timeless body of work.  His songs are all the more poignant now that he has passed.  Damn it.  Every once in a while someone, in the public sphere, dies and it affects you more than you would have thought.  This is one of those times.

I only got to see him live once. His opening act was Brian Setzer, who I am a huge fan of. But my friend was late getting out of work, traffic sucked. We were so late that I only got to see Setzer's last song. I was mad.

But then Tom Petty came on. He and the band were terrific. Made up for a bad start for me.

I have most of Petty's albums, but for some reason Wildflowers is my favorite. It is very intimate, almost like the band was playing in my living room.

I feel the same way. I brought my 30 year old son to see Tom and the first act was Steve Winwood. What a night. It felt like he was playing just to us.

My son text me today, he's watching a documentary on Tom. It really affected him. My son and I are both musicians and I'm 64. Maybe age has something to do with what I'm feeling, the mortality of it all.

This must be hard on the family, the immediate band members (can't imagine how Mike C is feeling) the Tom Petty machine.

What a crappy start to October.  Tom Petty was everything said above and then some.  I own everything he's recorded, because the guy was a fantastic musician, by all accounts a great dude, and his passing just makes me feel like another old-school, "analog" hero is gone with absolutely no one to fill his shoes.  Went out to my cave tonight when I got home, sat at my kit, fired up a couple of albums and played through every song.  Really felt the jam...but bittersweet.  RIP, Tom.

My wife and I saw Petty on May 12, with Joe Walsh as an opening act,

Both Walsh and Petty were lights-out good.

One of the best parts was close-ups on the jumbotron of the lead guitar players in various songs, and how they worked the strings to get their sound.

I remember the first time I heard "Free Fallin", it was a transcendental experience. It ranks in my musical experience with the first time I heard the Stones play, "Paint It Black," and Nirvana playing, "Come As You Are."

I was and am such a big fan of his music with the Heartbreakers. I'm glad I got to see him once when I was a kid.

Edit: Ok, for some reason this post got submitted while I was still first writing it. Weird. Never had that happen before. I was gonna keep going with a series of Petty song embeds, but I have been derailed lol. 

 

Edit again: Well, despite this post getting ruined by an accidental submit click (still not sure how that happened), I just wanted to say how much I loved this guy's music, from the Heartbreakers to the Traveling Wilburies, he was definitely one of the good ones in this world.
