Favorite Team Game (or one you think would be most fun)

19 members have voted

  1. 1. Which team format is your favorite? (or if you don't play team games, what do you think would be most fun)

    • Foursomes (alternate shot)
    • Greensomes (modified alternate shot - each drives, then select & alternate)
    • Four Ball (best ball of two)
    • 2-Person Scramble
    • 4-Person Scramble
    • Something else - please describe

Oh, I do like to play a team game not listed. I forgot about this one.

Low, High, Total.

Three points on each hole, played as a Nassau (so, front-back-total, too). Usually like $5 so you can win or lose $15 max.

Low ball gets a point. High ball, the other team gets a point. Low Total (low combined score) gets a point.

If you tie, no points (or half a point to each team, it doesn't matter).

So team A gets a 4 and a 5. Team B gets a 5 and a 5. Team A wins Low (4) and Total (9).

Sometimes we play where birdies double the winnings and eagles triple it, but only if your partner made a bogey or better.

I don't have a lot of experience playing team golf so I voted 4-person scramble. Gives me something to play for even when I suck. It's also the only format I've actually played.

2-person scramble sounds interesting as a match.

I'd never heard/thought of this.  I LOVE this!  I voted scramble because, one, it's fun to shoot way under par, even if it's a scramble score.  But also because, among the limited team action I've done, it's felt most inclusive with a range of abilities.  Like, a scramble where the best and worst players (2some or 4some) are not close, then the it almost becomes a best player vs best player game, which isn't as fun and team oriented.  I really like this game here...

I'm very intrigued by alternate shot for this same reason.  But I've never played it.

Well...

I don't have much practice playing team golf so today we decided to play 4 ball.   The wager was just the first round after golf.   I need more of this.   I stunk up the front 9 and didn't settle down until later in the round.  Even though the bet wasn't much, the additional pressure was fun but a little unnerving.   I can see where playing in tournaments will improve your game.    I'd like to incorporate more next year.

Heck, it ain't golf unless you're playing for a little something. Even a single beer after the round! My buddy and I used to play for a beer a stroke. Amazing how that focused the mind!

I picked alternate shot. The only time I've played it is at the Newport Cup in 2015, and that was a lot of fun. I've played a lot of four-person scrambles and I really enjoy how low-pressure those are, but for a "real" format I'll take foursomes.

I voted Four Ball...I like keeping my own score, and feeling like every shot "counts" (unlike a scramble)...but still being able to have my typical few awful holes and get bailed out by a teammate.

I don't know the name of this game: play 2 against 2 where both scores count: you match the 2 low scores against each other for a point or tie (like best ball aka fourball), but also match the other 2 scores for another point or tie. So you can win 0, 1 or 2 points per hole. Automatic presses (start another bet) for every time a team is down by 2, played on front and back and total, like Nassaus.

ETA: I think this is a lot like @iacas described, but with sort of only High and Low. Anyway, the automatic presses make the holes 7, 8 and 9 of the front and back most interesting.

    • In terms of ball striking, not really. Ball striking being how good you are at hitting the center of the clubface with the swing path you want and the loft you want to present at impact.  In terms of getting better launch conditions for the current swing you have, it is debatable.  It depends on how you swing and what your current launch conditions are at. These are fine tuning mechanisms not significant changes. They might not even be the correct fine tuning you need. I would go spend the $100 to $150 dollars in getting a club fitting over potentially wasting money on changes that ChatGPT gave you.  New grips are important. Yes, it can affect swing weight, but it is personal preference. Swing weight is just one component.  Overall weight effects the feel. The type of golf shaft effects the feel of the club in the swing. Swing weight effects the feel. You can add so much extra weight to get the swing weight correct and it will feel completely different because the total weight went up. Imagine swinging a 5lb stick versus a 15lb stick. They could be balanced the same (swing weight), but one will take substantially more effort to move.  I would almost say swing weight is an old school way of fitting clubs. Now, with launch monitors, you could just fit the golfer. You could have two golfers with the same swing speed that want completely different swing weight. It is just personal preference. You can only tell that by swinging a golf club.
    • Thanks for the comments. I fully understand that these changes won't make any big difference compared to getting a flawless swing but looking to give myself the best chance of success at where I am and hopefully lessons will improve the swing along the way. Can these changes make minor improvements to ball striking and misses then that's fine. From what I understood about changing the grips, which is to avoid them slipping in warm and humid conditions, is that it will affect the swing weight since midsize are heavier than regular and so therefore adding weight to the club head would be required to avoid a change of feel in the club compared to before?
    • I think part of it is there hasn't been enough conclusive studies specific to golf regarding block studies. Maybe the full swing, you can't study it because it is too complicated and to some degree it will fall into variable or random.
    • Going one step stiffer in the golf shaft, of the same make and model will have minor impact on the launch conditions. It can matter, it is a way to dial in some launch conditions if you are a few hundred RPM off or the angle isn't there. Same with moving weights around. A clubhead weights 200-220 grams. You are shifting a fraction of that to move the CG slightly. It can matter, again its more about fine tuning. As for grip size, this is more personal preference. Grip size doesn't have any impact on the swing out of personal preference.  You are going to spend hundreds of dollars for fine tuning. Which if you want, go for it. I am not sure what your level of play is, or what your goals in golf are.  In the end, the golf swing matters more than the equipment. If you want to go to that level of detail, go find a good golf club fitter. ChatGPT is going to surface scan reddit, golfwrx, and other popular websites for the answers. Basically, it is all opinionated gibberish at this point.
