Neither of the last two posts do a good job of capturing the opposing sentiment.

Different zip codes entirely.

That’s a whiff @Jack Watson and @sheepdog.

Basically this thread comes down to this:  if you like a golfer who takes advantage of the rules then they are labeled smart,  if you don’t then they are cheating liars.

Wrong, I like certain golfers and they get the same judgment from me if they both did the same thing Phil did. You’re generalization is way wrong.

Come on, every pro athlete has a moment they'd just as soon take a mulligan on. I wish he'd have withdrawn after the third round but he didn't. I just see it as him being human.

That’s fine, but he can still be criticized for his actions. Especially lying about it.

iacas,

I was referring to Tiger's defects of character.

They are far worse than anything Phil has been involved or implicated in.

Agreed but Phil is human and he does some fine things you never hear about. Like I said he should have withdrawn from the tournament.

I hope you guys remember that when I criticize a certain other golfer that is beloved around here.

Ever do anything you've regretted and made it worse by putting out some BS. Phil's human, everyone has. Not a whiff, More like a five iron on the green from 190

Being human isn’t an excuse to cheat. Being a humanitarian is not an excuse to cheat. Does everyone makes mistakes, yep. He needed to own up to it. The USGA needed to DQ him. Using the good things he’s done to validate bad actions is a horrible way to think. That’s like saying, if I cut a check for two million dollars I get to punch kids. How does good actions validate bad ones, they don’t. People can do good and bad. One doesn’t validate the other. I feel that is the arguement Phil lovers want to make.

He did something rash and stupid.

Then he came up with a stupid cover story.

Then he apologized and owned up to both.

It's not like he cheated on his wife/family with a few dozen escorts/waitresses/god konws what else and caromed around town looped out of his mind in a motor vehicle endangering people's lives.

The implication by many here that Phil was "cheating" is baffling to me. You guys must have a very different definition of cheating than I do.

Phil screwed up, he waved the white flag in a manner that was flippant and arguably disrespectful to the game. He lied about it afterward. None of those things reflect favorably on Phil.

But cheating??? Come on guys.....

Now he's a child abuser???? Really, equate child abuse with hitting a moving ball. Isn't being a humanitarian more like atoning to a higher power for some of the crummy things you've done in life.

You go to church? if so why? Is religion a good thing? Do you feel better after hearing the sermon? Do you feel better after you've dropped that check in the plate?

I never said he was. I was giving an extreme example to prove your logic is faulty. If I run a stop sign, should I get a pass because I never gotten a ticket before? Some cops might think so, but I should get a ticket. I broke a law. I'm not going to sit back and say, "Well, this is my first ticket. I gave money to that charity last week. I could lie about not seeing the stop sign. Maybe he will see me as a good person and let this one slide." How self serving and selfish is that line of thinking.

No, being a humanitarian is being a good person. It's not an excuse to validate doing bad thing elsewhere. How crapy is that line of thinking, that all good work is just so people can do bad stuff. I mean come on. People should do the right thing because it's the right thing to do. Props to Phil for doing good stuff in his life. He still should have been DQ'd.

Off topic, but I don't go to church. I am agnostic. Nice try on trying to pin me down as religious. 😜

Maybe we should just ban him from the tour, and strike his records from the books. After all, his action was so horrendous, no apology can erase what he did.(THIS IS SARCASM) At what point do you ease up? I posted days ago how disappointed I was, not what he did, but his story afterward, and that he played on Sunday. He was at fault, of course, but so,was the USGA for not disqualifing him. Phil did eventually apologize. I'm not sure how sincere it was, but at least he made the effort. That's mare then the assholes at the USGA have done.

This is about what Phil did on Saturday at the US OPEN. We’re talking about ‘golf character’. Tiger has never done anything like what Phil did...not sure any four golfer has.

Besides you’re only speculating about Phil’s off course character. I mentioned one but that was all over the news. If Phil had half the media attention Tiger does/did who knows what would be discovered.

Nah Tiger wouldn't do that he would just use every curse word in the book in front of everybody including kids but that's fine.Right.

I agree.  For something to be cheating there has to be an element of deception and trying to get away with something.  This was just a blatant disregard of the rules, but with no intent to conceal anything.  It was the blatant nature of what he did which should have gotten him DQed under 33-7, IMO.  I hope the player behavior provisions under the new rules addresses this better.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

Yeah clearly they don't know the meaning of cheating. If Phil was trying to cheat then he did a bad job of it right in front of everyone.I wouldn't try to cheat but if I did you wouldn't know about it haa.
