Clearly, what's happening here is Phil is getting crotchety in his old age.  And can afford to do so at a whim.  (Actually, this is semi-serious - it's right up his alley)

1 - "commenting" on the green conditions at Shinnecock.

2 - "commenting" on the grounds crew upkeep of the mowing at the tee box.

3 - commenting (not figuratively) about the Ryder Cup team philosophy

As for the first 2, he should have to play some of the goat tracks around here....

That was a failed attempt on my part to post a link to just the last 45 seconds or so of the exchange. I undoubtedly copied the wrong URL.  Apologies.

His uncle was a member at the club I play at.  The course definitely went through some periods of being in terrible condition.  I played with him (the uncle, never met Phil) a few times, really great guy.  Even without discussing Phil with him, the uncle's attitude really made me believe Phil's public demeanor (the common one prior to a few months ago) was genuine.

Phil's behavior lately though... :-(

I think the RO had a good idea that Phil broke a rule. Phil asked if it would have been no issue if he just moved the ball more to the side. Phil was just extrapolating his line of thinking at the time. Then the RO came back and informed Phil he indeed broke the rule.

I may be mistaken, but it appeared to me that when the official returned to inform Phil of the penalty, he was asked if moving to a new spot on the tee box would have negated the penalty. He seemed ito suggest that had Phil moved his tee he wouldn't have incurred the penalty. That is incorrect, of course.

I think what Phil was talking about moving his tee before he tamped the grass down?  Which leads me to this question...

Could Phil have tamped the grass down first, then teed up his ball on that line without penalty?

I don't know, my demeanor and those of my uncles are completely different.

You could be correct, but I really doubt this was what Phil was asking.  You can always move your tee to a different location on the tee box.

This could have been what the official thought he was asking, but his reply to Phil indicates otherwise - at least to me.

    • Not really, no. I don't know the history, what you've worked on, what you've tried and moved away from… etc.
    • Day 9: 2/16/25 Putting through 50 mm gates from 11”. Swing pressure shift drills.
    • Definitely not a favorite… For some reason my wife and I started watching Cobra Kai. I know the original was pretty cheesy, but the inability of these people to get over shit that happened like 30 years ago is astounding. And these kids would be arrested, but they don’t even seem to get suspended from school. Would Danny not notice that Johnny’s son looks like Johnny? Etc.? Why would a completely different dojo that has the same name be “banned”? Oy. Not sure we’ll make it to season 2.
    • Day 139 - 2025-02-16 Weather led to a rescheduled GEARS lesson, so I used the time to work on my swing for 60 minutes or so. All downswing stuff. Some swings at 93 MPH. Most around 75-80.
