So, How Bad Do I Get Beat...?

Playing in our usual 5-some next Friday...no worries, we’ll finish somewhere around 3:15ish...

...but, after a bit too much good bourbon last night, I agreed to play alone, 2 separate matches against the other two 2-balls.  One team has a 4hcp and an 8, and the other is a 5 and a 7.  I’m getting 3 a side from each team, playing my one ball against their two...

Do I need to stop at an ATM before the round, or should I make reservations at a nice steakhouse for afterwards?!

2 down presses.  It could leave a mark...

I do get a stroke on both 17 and 18 though, so that helps!

IMHO, unless you are really on that day (hey, it could happen!), prepare to fork over some dough. Your 7-8 4 vs 4 and 8 or 5 and 7, even with 3 strokes a side, is unlikely. You can only count on yourself whereas in a 2-ball, there is a pretty good chance (say 75%) that one guy picks the other one up...

You need more strokes. If you play well (80 or better), you are probably looking at a coin flip. If you are not playing well, you have no chance.

While it's possible the main bets could be over by the time you reach 17, those strokes might be helpful to swing a press or two and keep the damage to a minimum.

So if I am not mistaken you are getting the appropriate amount of strokes from the lower handicap as if you were playing him in a singles match. BUT he gets a partner that has the same handicap as you.

Reminds me of some good advice I received one time from a local bookie, "Don't bet drunk."

About 4 months ago I made a similiar bet with a 5 handicap and his friend who is about a 9. No strokes, just best ball, them against me. I was lucky to tie, lost the front, won the back, tied the 18 on a 12' birdie on hole 18. It's hard beating a partnership by yourself, especially if they ham and egg you.

I’d say book the steakhouse and make sure they buy you a steak with your ex-money. 

I played a couple of games with my family on holiday a long time ago. Me off scratch. My brother off 6. My dad off 17 and my mum off 19. UK handicaps. I played against their best ball. We had good matches. I had to play well to win. If I didn’t I’d lose. 

For a further reference 4 ball better ball stablefords at my club in England you could expect a winning score around 42-44 points (6 to 8 below par) and 36 points was a bad score. Most pairs would be in the 38-42 range. 

On that basis I’d give you about a 10-15% chance of winning each match. So maybe a 15-20% chance of breaking even. 1-2% chance of winning. Most likely outcome is you lose all six and maybe snag a press but if you have a bad day and don’t capitalize on 17 and 18 you could easily be out $100. I hope the bourbon was worth it!
