Good luck and I hope that the changes work.  About a year and a half ago, I went to slightly larger (what they call midsized) and more cushiony grips made by Wynn and I could not believe the difference this made.  I probably am getting a bit of arthritis in my hands and had been feeling sometime like I was losing my grip when I swung a club (in particular but not exclusively my driver) and I know longer feel that way.  Hopefully all your changes help you swing better than ever.


New to The Sand Trap, so a little late posting.

My goal for 2019 has been to have fun playing golf. I like golf, I like to hit balls on range, practice but I have not really felt like  I was having fun while playing/had fun when i finished round. I have kind of stopped playing until I figure that out. I'm ok, 18 handicap. But, especially when playing 18, by the time I'm done it almost feels like work. Trying to figure out some things I can do to have 18 feel fun again. I don't ever really feel "loose" in my swing or overall when I'm playing. Trying to start there :-)

easier said than done.... :-) I actually "practice" a lot. I live on a golf course. Nothing about the golf swing ever feels natural, fluid to me. Given that, I'm still able to play bogey golf.


My goal this year is to win the Arizona State Amateur Championship.

I always dreamed of playing on the PGA Tour, but I started golfing when I was 15 - so I was a bit behind the 8-ball from the start. I managed to get a D2 scholarship at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs. It ended up being too expensive, so I have moved back home and now work a full-time job in digital marketing, while finishing school online through GCU & practice in the evenings after work.

Anyway, that is a brief history... Yeah so, I just want to win the State AM in my home state; I believe it would be a great personal accomplishment.

First: Play more golf, which I can now do. Life got a little busy but I've been playing every week at least once a week.

Second: Break 80 consistently. 

  • Need to putt better. Been putting at home and doing drills to get feedback (i.e. ruler drill, putting gates, etc...)
  • Limit wayward tee shots
  • No 3 putts!
  • Tighten up bunker and mid range pitch shots

Third: Manage course and game better. Be more focused on the stress free shot and be more aware of course and where to miss. Play the smart shot and take my medicine.


Wanna get closer to a 10...maybe finish the summer somewhere around a 12-13. Getting close, as I'm now starting to shoot mid-80's consistently and the short game is coming around a bit.

Putting especially 4-8 feet, really should be making more of these. So far with extra practice this has started to happen.....although I still get a little quick with my 8802 style putter and pull some.


1. Play more golf than last year. Lame goal to be writing now because I have already done that, but it really was a goal at the beginning of the year.

2. Develop a serviceable driver swing. I have historically hit down with my driver and hitting off the top of the club.  I will correct that and get my driver average up to 225 in the fairway more often than not. Measurement might be a problem with attaining this goal. I just had my gallbladder removed last week and haven't been swinging a club lately. I feel like time is slipping away this year. 

3. Join a league. It might be too late for this year unless there is a new league forming for fall.  I used to play in leagues many year ago and I always had fun, even if I did not improve appreciably. 

4. Break 90 again. My best scores ever are from beer fueled tournaments that only allowed the use of 2 clubs and a putter. I scored 87 both times on 2 different courses using a 3i, 8i and a putter.  I should probably try that again on my own.

5. Beat my son at the end of the year. My 16 year old is playing on the HS team for the first time this year. He is very raw right now, but can hit it a long way.  I can currently beat him, but he will be playing much more often than me and I expect him to improve quickly. I need to improve just as quickly as he does.

I'd like to consistently break 90. I normally float around low 90's (~50% of the time), high 80's on a good day (~20% of the time), high 90's on a bad day (~30% of the time). I guess my first goal would be to play more consistently, then make my sub 90 rounds consistent.

Also get a raise or a better paying job so I can golf more 😄

I just started playing again in late 2018. My goal for 2019 is to break 100.

I joke that I've had a good round if I just don't fall out of the cart...

Having gone through some injuries and surgeries a couple years ago, my goals are simple.

Get in better physical shape so I can continue to play golf without pain.

Work harder in my backyard practice area to groove my swing and improve my ball striking.

Regain the abilities I lost following those injuries and surgeries to lower my scores back into the consistent mid to high 70s.

Eventually shoot my age... That one might be more of a 2020 goal...

#1. Done ...  Club Champion was a neat experience, but if your swing is awful that day, fitting is pretty much a waste of time.  That day I was pulling everything 30 yards dead left.  So no real good info with which I could base new club purchases.  I ended up buying a “new” D,3w and 2 hybrids on  callawaygolfpreowned.com  for less than $600.  The driver is working out great and I am still finding my way with the others.

 

#2 ... the main reason I am posting tonight...  shot a one under 70 today at a course I’ve never played.  Woohoo!!!

 

#4. Definitely have gotten a lot of golf in so far this year.  Today was the 25th score I have posted  in three months.  Bandon trip is not happening, but Reno is in 3 weeks!

 

#5.. still no movement on my weight... still trying to figure out how to drop a little wight and keep it off without going to extremes, but I’m still trying...

 

#6...  still have only birdied about half of the holes on my home course.

update to #3...  Club championship this past weekend.  Shot 72 in the first round and was one off the lead.  Playing in the final group with two of our best players... yup, I choked like a ... something that chokes really badly.  Shot 87 - the worst round of the year in a season that i have played the best golf of my life.  I had no idea where the ball was going to go every shot and playing scared- not scared- terrified, is not conducive to good golf.  So emotionally crushed.

Very late in the year...but my golf year is basically just starting. I've only played 45 holes so far in 2019.

1. Play more golf!

2. Get a good bit of range time in

3. Stop slicing my driver

4. Take a few lessons

5. Have my game in decent enough shape to play consistently in 2020.

2019 Goals

- Play at least 10 rounds of golf (so far played about 6). Most likely won't hit the mark this year due to new child.

- Break 80 (closest this year was 84)

- Chipping chipping chipping


With my 2018/2019 golf season pretty much over, I can safely say I more than exceeded most my goals for the previous season. 

About the only things I didn't do was score an albatross, and a hole in one. Came close on the "hio" a couple of times. 

Stayed healthy, and played alot of golf the past 11 months.

Looking forward to my  2019/2020 season which starts around late October/November 1st.

    • Not really, no. I don't know the history, what you've worked on, what you've tried and moved away from… etc.
    • Day 9: 2/16/25 Putting through 50 mm gates from 11”. Swing pressure shift drills.
    • Definitely not a favorite… For some reason my wife and I started watching Cobra Kai. I know the original was pretty cheesy, but the inability of these people to get over shit that happened like 30 years ago is astounding. And these kids would be arrested, but they don’t even seem to get suspended from school. Would Danny not notice that Johnny’s son looks like Johnny? Etc.? Why would a completely different dojo that has the same name be “banned”? Oy. Not sure we’ll make it to season 2.
    • Day 139 - 2025-02-16 Weather led to a rescheduled GEARS lesson, so I used the time to work on my swing for 60 minutes or so. All downswing stuff. Some swings at 93 MPH. Most around 75-80.
    • A question I have is…this swing (fade, pull cut) does not  feel as good and easily repeatable as the draw swing we were working on previously.  I’m kinda in a weird spot where I do not know which direction will be the best to pursue. I like seeing a penetrating 5 yard draw but also like the thought of the fade not getting away from me as much.    Any thoughts on that?
