Overrated/Underrated #10: Arrcos, Game Golf, or other game tracking software.

Since almost nobody uses them, extremely underrated. I started using Game Golf about a year ago, and it's been really helpful for me. Probably the biggest thing is that, I've been able to see where I need to focus my practice. A side benefit is seeing the true distances of my clubs. Just being able to see where I need to practice is huge.

Underrated for people who are serious about their score/handicap and want to improve.

It's hard for most average amateurs to know where they are losing strokes/need to improve the most without a game tracking device. Yes you can keep track of GIR, scrambling, etc manually on a scorecard, but very few average amateurs do that on a regular basis, plus that leaves out the distances that you hit each shot.

Underrated. Most people think they hit the ball a lot further than they actually do. It also will expose the actual weaknesses in their game and dispel the typical myth of "I'm just a terrible putter". It can also help with showing typical misses to game plan accordingly.

Underrated, for the reasons listed above. People don't understand partial shots, but they can look at a graph and say "oh, this bar is much bigger than this bar."

And under-developed. GAME GOLF in particular has sucked at exposing actual statistics. We've got basically no new stats in years.

Underrated - Hard evidence is a great way to change ones views on things. These tracking systems can give a person a wake up call on getting off that practice green and get to the range.

I also say underrated. Personally I use Arrcos. I love the website even more than the ap. On the website you not only get a load of useful stats, including distance and accuracy, but you also get a history of how you play each hole. I find this part really valuable.

By the way, most of that information is also available on the ap, including history of how you play each hole. It's just a bit more comprehensive on the website.

The only thing I'm not sure I'm getting that much out of is the virtual caddie. The ap will give recommendations for each shot. I find that it pretty much recommends what I was going to do anyway, so I'm not sure that does a lot for me.

I find I don't really look at the caddie much while playing.

A mix I am forever tinkering with.

Definitely Underrated.   It is amazing to see the numbers.   My instructor has stated several times he wishes all of his students had Game Golf.   To me, it's definitely helped improve my game.    I still have a glaring weakness but with the numbers, it's obvious.

I'll bite - Overrated, at least as it relates to measuring club distance.  There are too many variables that impact your distance such as wind, lie, what you had for breakfast, and seriously your typical roll out.  You should be aware of whether you are typically long or short on your normal approaches and can accomplish this with a little brain matter, no need for one of these devices.  I have a Cobra driver that came with an Arrcos device - I used for about 5-10 rounds and haven't since - pretty much confirmed that my estimates on how far my drives were going were typically within 10 yards.

I do think that statistical analysis is Underrated if you are getting good data from these systems.  The problem from the examples that I have seen is that they compare everyone to a scratch golfer.  Not sure that really helps most of us.  I use a less sophisticated program but is compares my game to my handicap goal - I find that much more useful.  Is that available on these systems?

One other reason I like Arccos is it dovetails well with the strategy concepts in LSW. The website literally gives you the size of you ovals.

I will say underrated, which is why I will be getting GG for my birthday this year! I had Arrcos, the first release, and it had lots of issues with connectivity and battery usage, so I stopped using it. I'm sure they fixed that by now.

How does it do that? Does it ask you where you aimed on every shot or just assume center of fairway/center of the green?

It assumes the center of the fairway and the flagstick, (or the center of the green, depending on how you use it.)

I guess you're correct in that it makes an assumption on where you are aiming. However, I now have like 150 or so shots with driver in my database. I'm going to assume that if you average all those out the center of the fairway is probably a pretty good indication of shot dispersion.

You are right, it's not perfect in terms of dispersion. However, when I read LSW I was excited because I already had that shot dispersion information readily available. Again, it's not perfect. There are other methods that may be better for calculating your shot dispersion (size of your ovals). I am having a hard time coming up with any other method that would be perfect.

You do learn fascinating things with Arccos. For example, I learned I hit my 4 wood further than I hit my 3 wood. I learned my driving handicap is close to scratch on my home course and more like a 12 on the rest of the courses I play. (I have several theories as to why.) I learned I hit a much higher percentage of greens with my 8 iron than I do with my 9 iron. (so much so that I had my 9 iron checked for lie angle and swing weight... sure enough it was different than the rest of the set.) I found out my sand game is actually pretty good. I found out I'm better off a tee with my 4 iron, but better out of the rough with my hybrid. (That one seems obvious, but I didn't actually think of it before.) Early in the season my long irons, and my chipping were both glaring weaknesses. I improved both and my over all handicap dropped fast.

Needless to type, I really like it. The ap only uses between 25-35% of my battery on my Galaxy S8 for a full 18 holes, so I can't even complain about that.

The only knock I have on it, is that I don't need the virtual caddie to suggest which club to use. It nearly always suggests what I was going to do anyway.

Using a launch monitor hitting 10 or so balls (that your normally game) would probably be near perfect.

My only concern with that is 2 fold. One you're not hitting off grass with random lies. Either it's a mat, or pretty good lies. Also hitting 10 shots in a row with the same club isn't like real golf. I agree with you that its probably the best you can do. That is assuming you have access to a launch monitor.

How much hype is there with the men’s compared to the women’s? I bet you can rattle off several big names in women’s gymnastics and only a handful of men. Women’s tennis …same thing. And sure enough, their purses are the same. However, WNBA, awful…LPGA, not near as much interest than PGA. Don’t think it’s really that complicated IMO.
