Has anybody used the Orange Whip trainer? If you have, did it help? In what way did it help or hinder your golf swing.

Posted (edited)

Sure, it works for what it is.

For me, it’s a tempo tool. The feedback of taking the swing back too fast is getting a little bop at the back of the head. Kind of a backswing for dummies tool 😂

You can find them for under $100 on sale now and then.

I have one and can honestly say it's the best golf gadget that I've bought.    I used it to warm up, help with the swing path and tempo.

Not a big fan. I'm sure it's okay for some people, but overall, it's not great for speed because it's too heavy, and it's not great for tempo because someone like Nick Price would have had that thing going all over the place with his tempo, and yet, he was a great player.

So, not a fan as it's not for everyone, and has plenty of potential downsides.

If you use it to stretch out a little bit, okay. But that's about all I'd really like to use it for.

Is it better suited to slower tempo swingers?

I have one but only use it occasionally to warm up. If someone had a real casting problem in their swing, the Orange Whip could help. But if you have a reasonably good swing sequence, it won't help correct anything. It is too flexible for swinging really fast, so as a speed training, it will be ineffective.

Too heavy too. Trains you to swing slow.

I have the mid-size one and find it great for warming up or stretching out.  Probably also helps a bit with tempo.

I'll agree that it doesn't seem particularly helpful unless you're casting the clubhead all over the place and need a demonstration of what it feels like to have the clubhead lag behind. In that regard the weight is helpful because it prevents you from swinging with your wrists.

I've tried swinging one once, and like @iacas mentioned, it's very much an individual thing if it's for you or not. I can't swing with my natural tempo (quick but consistent) because of the weight and flexibility, but if someone really is rushing or naturally has a slower tempo swing already it might help them get a feel for things? I could see using it to loosen up a bit before swinging a club since the weight kind of pulls you to stretch, but I'd personally rather just hit some pitch shots followed by 3/4 and full swings to get into my own tempo and rhythm while loosening up at the same time.

I have never thought of it as a swing trainer. I used to use mine to loosen up before a round. It was pretty good at stretching the swing muscles out, but I hated having to drag it around all day in my bag for the 35 seconds I used it before playing. Now it collects dust in the basement.

I have one and it has now become a part of my routine.  Great, as indicted move to correcting that sense of casting.  As I am a slow swinger by nature, it has helped me in developing a flow with my stroke and it feels better for me in terms of the direction my hips  need  to move.  Might not be for all, but has helped me a lot.

It's very individualistic.  I'm kind of in the middle here, it's ok for me since at times I can get too quick at the top, so I'll swing it for a few minutes periodically to keep my rhythm in check.  What I NEVER do is warm up with it before playing.  Did that once and my iron shafts felt like noodles for the next hour, it was pretty strange.

Have any of you folks tried this training aid? I was swing one today at Golf Galaxy and thought it may help my swinging from the top. I was swinging the shorter one. Opinions please!

I have the long one, but don't use it as a training aid, just use it to stretch and swing it to loosen up.  I probably should look at it's training side, but haven't seen a need for it at this point.

When you say 'swinging from the top', what do you mean (e.g., over the top, leading with the arms)?

Starting my swing sequence with my hands at the top. I think this would be good for building core strength, plus smooth out my swing. The $109 held me back from buying one until I hear from other folks who use it.

I’ll share my thoughts later. Short version: they’re good if used properly.

Interesting use of the orange whip.  I also saw Vijay at a tour event practicing with the Momentus Power Hitter driver (hitting golf balls with it).

    • I enjoyed the distance wedges episode. It's something that I've not really taken the time to figure out for sure, but I went to a local trackman place over the winter and tested my four wedges (PW, AW, 54, 58) and got four yardages with each one. I am using Dan Grieve's method - you have a 1, 2, 3, and "full". The number references the number of clubhead widths between your heels.  I never really got to grips with the clock method - I'd find my 9:00 one day would go 40 yards and the next day 60 yards purely based on how fast I happened to swing it, but I couldn't turn that off and I was basically at sea with the speed method (Wesley Bryan does this - he takes almost a full swing for a 15 yard chip). The Grieve method I set my stance width and that really limits how much my swing moves back and forth and the speed seems to be naturally more consistent.  Anyway, I wound up with four yardages for each club - PW 48, 80, 112, 127; AW 41, 73, 101, 112; 54 36, 57, 91, 98; 58 28, 47, 81, 86 So, in order, I have 28, 36, 41, 47, 48, 57, 73, 80, 81, 86, 91, 98, 101, 112, 112, 127 which gives me a pretty good set of numbers. I do have a big gap from 57 to 73, but I can do a 2.5 58, which is giving me about 64. Then as they noted you can give it a bit more, or grip down on a club too to adjust a little bit. It's really useful and very freeing to just know what to do. When you have a 54 yard pitch, rather than pulling my 58 and thinking how hard is 54, I can just take my 54, do a "2" swing and just grip down a little and I'm in decent shape.  Incidentally, Erik talked a bit about watching Scheffler picking off his yardages to within a yard. I've watched DJ do that too with his wedges. Scottie does it trying to hit it all the way up to like 200 exactly with a 6-iron and he's hitting it 200.5, 199.7, etc. Absolutely mind blowing how good his distance control is. Insane.
