Ball at Rest Moved - How Would You Improve This Rule?
parman replied to iacas's topic in Rules of Golf
I don't believe DJ caused the ball move. To me that is not the issue. They had a rules official traveling with their group. If he was not qualified to make the call why was he even there? This is the real issue to me. He made a decision and that should have been the end, period. We have way to many Monday morning quarterbacks who all have an opinion after the fact. Discussing a bad situation does not solve anything. The "committee' whoever that is, should support their traveling official since he was right there to see it all in person. If the tournament was a tie or the decision took away the win from DJ there would be a much louder response. At 14 on the stint meter most anything could make that ball move 2 mm. JMHO- 340 replies

I agree there not all starters are the same, some better than others. I see no liability problems and if you play the same course a lot I am sure the starter can be accommodating if there is a day when you just want to practice and the amount of play allows this. Most courses need more marshals to keep things going and that's a good point. As a side note I have been paired with some very interesting people over the years.

I play a lot myself very similar to the original post. However now we seem to be getting more and more golfers at the local muni so it's getting so there is a string of singles almost 9 holes long. I always believed it is the starters job to see that this situation does not occur. When I played decades ago you played where there was a slot to fit you our your group. If you didn't like it you didn't play. I think when super busy the course should put players together to save time. That is just my opinion and am sure others will disagree.

He was asked, What is the secret of golf?" His answer was, "Six inches, between your ears". So Palmer did not say, "secret". Just to clarify everything. I think anything over $500.00 for a putter is probably too much. I have paid more for a putter but not 2-3K. I've run Bridgeport Mills and automated Mills. You just program them and they do all the work. Carbon and stainless steel are sold by the ton. I will never understand pros and their putters. Tiger ditched one that won tens of millions for him. VJ Sing was cruising along with a long putter. He comes out to a tournament one day with a Japanese Bettinardi, regular length. He wins! The next week he uses the same putter and wins! The next week he comes back out with the long putter and does not win. Can anyone explain that to me? It totally blows my mind. If I won two tournaments in a row with the same putter, regardless of brand or looks, you couldn't pry that putter out of my hands. Go figure.
-
They are probably given the circle T putters or paid to play them. No putter is worth 2-3K+ unless it's gold plated. If they were so popular why do so many players use different putters? It's all just the propaganda pushed by golf manufacturers. Odyssey putters are not that expensive and I see a lot of them on the PGA tour. Remember all pros do not use "tour" putters. Some even use OTR putters. It's like Arnold Palmer said about the secret of golf, "It's 6 inches, between your ears."

One of the things that separates golf from other sports is it's history and traditions which seem to be under attack mainly because people don't have the patients or commitment to learn how to play. Golf is just fine as it is w/o changes. It has survived many generations with little change and will continue to do so. If anything it needs more marshals to keep the pace going and noise down and deal with people who should not be on the course, like drunks, etc.

I have a Mack Daddy PM grind 60*. It's a very versatile wedge. (It's great out of sand as a bonus) I would look at the mack Daddy 2s but went back to a custom Scratch 60*. I would like to try the 64. It's very interesting listening to Roger Cleveland explaining this wedge on youtube.

I would go for the Mizunos. I love the feel of forged irons.
-
I see way more long hitters up too far so they can play driver wedge. At the local course I play I have NEVER seen a senior golfer at the wrong tees since I moved here in 2008. I think senior golfers has had it's run Now how about children on the course or loud radios.
-
Remember, if you are lucky you will be a senior someday. I feel that grouping golfers in categories by age is not a good idea. Everyone is different, regardless of age. There is no place on a golf scorecard for age. I see long hitters hitting from shorter tees than they should be never have seen a senior use the tips unless they blast the ball which is rare.

I just read an article on the loss of golfers and the reason for golf's decline. It seems the Millennials don't like golf and are one of the top reasons for golf going down hill. They would rather run or play soccer. It takes too long to learn to play well. So w/o seniors more courses would close. Do you know more now than when you were 20 y/o? How about when you are 30 y/o or 40 y/o? As we age we gain knowledge. That process continues all through your life and most will eventually learn this. Some will be clueless all there lives.

Senior Golf - Slow, Rude, Clueless & Angry
parman commented on bkuehn1952's blog entry in Random Golf Commentary
I am 69 y/o and can walk 9 holes in 1 1/2 hours. I play fast. The foursomes that slow down the course are usually much younger than me and play like they are in the Masters. Multiple practice swings, two or three looks at the hole and then finally a shot or maybe a few more practice swings. Then come the putting and I fall asleep. Multiply that by 4 and wow they are very slow! The stereotype of seniors is stupid but there. I walk in to get fitted and out come the massive GI irons. I play muscle backs because I hit the center of the club and I like the forged feel. GI irons do nothing for me and I hate the huge soles and big offset. That's just me. -
Changing irons can be hard. I currently use MP-59s and cannot hit an offset GI club anymore. But the MP-59 shafts are a little too stiff for me (Aerotech Steelfiber R staffs) which play on the stiff side. So I now have a choice of having the MP-59s sent in for a re-shaft or I may get the MP-25s with the shaft of my choice. I am leaning towards the 25s. Hopefully they will be close and my initial break in period will not be too long. Our demo day is in a week or two and I will hit as many irons as I can.

I believe that is a Nike saying.

I've never understood how a person in a non contact sport can get so many injuries. I suspect physical enhancement drugs could be a problem. What has he recently accomplished?

He is still being paid by his sponsors even though he does nothing. The 1st billion dollar golfer and he's toast. I doubt he cares.

Arnold Palmer and Fred Couples.

I don't blindly worship Tiger like some do. I also did't know others on this site have seen Jack in person. Exactly where did you see Jack play?
-
I have seen the both and Jack is by far the best. What is Tiger doing now? He sure is not winning. His historical achievements are nice but they don't win tournaments. I saw Jack at a driving range prior to the start of a tournament and he talked to the crowd, explained what he was hitting and doing. He was very sociable and approachable.

Thanks all for the nice replies. I realize all golf forums get contentious at times. I think respect for other members is most important. Now it looks like our snow is melting and temp rising so I will be able to play in a day or two.

I have posted a few things but never introduced myself, sorry. I am a retired 100% Disabled Veteran from the Vietnam War. I live in the mountains of Arizona. I have worked in several fields with a degree in electronics. Also have done some hard labor in my life and owned my own corporation. I try and keep an open mind as I think others should too. Golf has ben an important part of my life and I'll play it until I physically cannot get to a course. LOL I have been a member of a major USA golf forum since 2005 but it is getting too contentious, with no respect for other members. That's time for me to leave. My philosophy is live and let live and like what you like and don't take crap from anyone. Sometimes that means minding your own business. I want to have fun when on a golf forum. Isn't that why we all join? Also to discuss my hobby/obsession. Hopefully I can learn some things and maybe contribute for the greater good. Cheers, Parman

How did you get your first hole in one? And have you ever been robbed.
parman replied to VoidOfEnigmas's topic in Golf Talk
Never had one in 56 years of golf. :( I've damaged the hole on the fly but bounced out. I've lipped out a few times, hit the pin, done everything but fall in the hole. I have given up and now just hope I get close enough for a birdie. -
They have a super reputation. Top notch.

After 55 years of golf I think I have learned some things myself, not from an internet article. It takes a complete game to be a good player. I do not drive the ball far (180-220) and was down to an honest 8 index two years ago. I love to play golfers who think their huge drive will win them the hole. Then I watch horrible chips or pitches that never make the green or close to the hole and lots of makable putts missed and lots of 3 putts. Going by your theory the best players on the PGA Tour would be he longest driver. That would be Ryan Palmer, Tony Finau, and Danial Burger. "There are lies, damned lies and statistics." Mark Twain

This game is played 150 yds and in so I totally disagree with the long game theory. The woods are full of long drivers as the saying goes. How could anyone get to be a 7 handicap w/o having a decent short game? JMHO
