Sean Foley Responds to Peter Kostis's Statement about Tiger's Draw

Pete McDaniel talked to Tiger's golf coach Sean Foley about how CBS on-course reporter Peter Kostis got it wrong in breaking down Tiger's swing last weekend when he described Tiger's club face as being "toed-in'' when it really was the opposite.

"His clubface was open say three degrees and his body rotation amounted to four degrees. That's what produced the draw.''

If anyone is confused by what Foley is saying, check out this article.  By "body rotation" I assume he means path And he's just giving an example he doesn't know exactly what the ratio is except that the path was further "out" than the face and that the face was aimed right.  But the point is Tiger's not hitting draws with a face aimed left of his target, unless they're ending up in the left trees.  Club face is a tool of projection.  To hit push draws the face needs to be aimed right of the target and closed to the path.

OP.. you bring up a topic that has always turned me OFF from TV golf.. I'm so sick and tired of the TV talk heads yapping about swing mechanics and analyzing everything.. OMG, if I have to watch ONE more super slow motion replay of a swing while some washed up PRO tells me about the swing.. I'm going to puke.. LOL  Of the 2 leagues I play in, it's amazing how many do not watch golf on TV, and why..  They all say the same thing.. TOO much yip yapping about nothing, and not enough golfing..

If they're going to talk about anything, I think a lot of golfers find the slow-motion stuff to be good. What they don't like is people yapping while we watch the FULL two-minute putting routine of some players.

It's just a pity that a lot of the slow-mo analysis - or the analysis in general - on TV is.... "lacking."

this.  if you ask 15 different pros something, they'll tell you 15 different things.

So what you're saying is... There is more than one way to hit a draw.  That is why I like this site so much.  I never knew that - until I really started understanding the ball flight laws.

Devil's advocate. Did Kostis specifically refer to the target in his explanation, or was he talking about the path as has been the norm for the past 50+ years?

I am really liking what I am hearing from Sean.  I am new to golf and professional golf in general so I wasn't around for all the controversy he stirred up but I like his attitude to coaching and his honesty when asked about his earlier coaching career and his missteps.

I don't think Kostis knows himself what he's talking about sometimes. He knows his stuff of course, but sometimes it seems he just throws a random comment about the swing during a swing analysis using the Konica Minolta Bizhub Swing Vision camera. It would've been interesting to hear the entire comment by Kostis, to give some context.

It was annoying how Kostis was analyzing all the celebrity swings after the 17th tee shot at Pebble during AT&T; this year. It looked like most of those celebrities just weren't interested.

I try not to listen to their analysis and instead, watch the video.

With guys who have a center-pivot or S&T; swing, from what I've heard of Kostis, he's got to know the guy is center pivot, ala Charlie Wie, before he gets that part correct.

A lot of this analysis is incorrect, but they pay these guys to say something... anything, and they do.

What gets me is that Peter Kostis doesn't know that he isn't fooling us with that horrible rug.

I generally just watch the slow-motion swings and tune out the jibber-jabber.

If Tiger has anything like "3 degree clubface open and four degree body turn" in his head, no wonder he can't put four rounds together in a major.

I'm down to a 10 handicap. At this rate, I'll get to scratch at 90 years old!

I'm so impressed with the elegance of "club face open to the target but closed to the path".  I've had many people over many occasions try to explain the "physics"/"mechanics"/"concept" of working the ball but no one I've met has ever been so concise and helpful.  Maybe I'm just easily impressed and/or a little slow but that is the most effective and useful description I've ever heard.

      I don’t measure my intake either. I generally have a black coffee, a bottle of soda, some sweet tea at home, and anything in between is water. An ice cold bottle of water is one of my favorite things. It feels like an immediate refresher for my body. I’ll admit that I need to drink a little more though.

      For such a nice membership, there have been some bad incidents in the past few years.  We had someone voted out a couple of years ago over something he did and he harassed the board members for three months until he moved out of the area.   Generally they’ve tried to do things like tournament handicaps and identify certain people who they know should be lower and adjust it somehow.  I can understand not wanting to go thru something like the guy who was voted out again i emailed the pro who forwarded it to the handicap committee.  They are going to see what can be done.  I walked someone thru what happened and they are going to nudge him to post the score from the match and see what he does.  Since he didn’t put anything in the electronic scoring past 13, based on how he played 14 and 15 plus having to take bogey on 16-18 for after he left, he should post 83.  We’ll see if it’s even higher,   Since he was really even thru 13, then doubled 14 and parred 15 my guess is he really shot 75 being generous and giving him 2 pars and a bogey on the three holes he didn’t play.    i shot 88, getting 16 shots for my course handicap which is net even and I lost on 13.  We do brackets where handicaps should be within 4-5 of each other.  Most matches only have 1-2 shots as a difference between players  neither of us posted the score yet.  There was something in the match play rules about whether or not to post your score.  I couldn’t remember if we were supposed to or not.  I don’t think he was going to post that, because even with his inflated score it would be the lowest score in his recent 20. Lucky I didn’t because they want to see what he does post and they don’t want me posting so he can try to calibrate his score.

      This is why you should never have any expectations when you play golf even when you think things are starting to click together. In end golf will just curb stump you.
