People knew FIFA was deeply corrupted for many years.  Qatar (a nation which never qualified for any World Cup) being voted to host a world cup was the most outrageous example of the corruption.   FIFA is so corrupted that in can't fix itself.  I am so proud of US taking the lead in arresting these bastards.

Well, yeah i can agree that arresting the bastards is good news.  But many folks wish that the FBI, etc, would arrest the bastard USA bankers who have stolen the money from so many small folks at home here.

Will these scum suffer?  Maybe not with good USA lawyers, whom they surely can afford.

How in the world did South Africa win a World Cup bid?? I'm pretty sure people were asking that question back then as well.. I'm happy that these clowns are being treated like the criminals they are.

Exactly! It's laughable that the UK have not had the World Cup since 1966. The stadia and infrastructure are some of the best in the world and could host a tournament tomorrow. Problem is the FA are not corrupt (thankfully) and they won't pay dodgy FIFA delegates any backhanders........get Blatter out and in court!

Good. I've been hoping for years that the IFAF would take the lead for international football anyway. Those interested in watching international football should try to view some of the IFAF World Cup this summer, especially since you'll be supporting an organization that loves the sport, not one that is out to line its pockets with corruption. I watched the Brazil v Panama qualifying match back in January, as well as some of the previous qualifiers (Japan v Philippines last summer was interesting).

I read Sneaker Wars a few years ago which was about Adi and Rudolf Dassler who started Adidas together and then when the relationship became strained and broken resulted in Rudolf going off and starting Puma to compete with his brother and Nike.

Much of the story was centered around FIFA and the IOC and how businesses like Adidas, Nike and Puma faced all the corruption and payoffs to get their shoes endorsed.

FIFA has been regarded as a corrupt organization (as well as the IOC) for many years but it seems they upset the wrong people this time.  I'm glad they are finally getting what they deserve.

I was astounded to learn a couple of facts about FIFA that makes this level of corruption almost inevitable 1) there are 209 countries in FIFA 2) they all get one vote for President of FIFA. 3) they all get the same share of the World Cup money And these are true regardless of the size of the country or its prominence in the sport. So Lichtenstein with its rich World Cup history and its population of under 40,000 has the same political clout and gets the exact same cut of the world cup monies as, say, Germany, with its 80+ million in population and its 4 World Cup victories. Maybe it is just me, but that is one crazy way to run a railroad.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

It very likely came down to who could offer the most bribe to willing recepients.   Qatar being picked over USA probably was a significant fuel for the arrest .... ;-) .

I strongly suspect Blatter is not clean but that guy is a political beast.  He probably got most of delegates in his pocket and nothing will stick.

It will be interesting to see how the vote comes out tomorrow.

Is it still correct that the 2022 World Cup would be held in December to avoid the scalding weather? Right in the middle of the club season for most of the world?

That's the proposal.  I don't know if it was agreed to by all.  Europeans were dead set against it.  I would love to see Qatar lose its world cup.  It SHOULD lose it.   This is a nation that buys soccer players to beef up their national team.   Even with the oil money, their team has never qualified for the World Cup.   They could not even get out of the 1st round in Asian Cup.   How can they qualify to host the World Cup is beyond me.

Putin came out criticizing & accusing US of trying to sabotage Russia's World Cup.   LOL.   Platini is willing to have a split World Cup if Blatter is reelected.  FIFA is in shambles.

In an amusing take, an arrested official holds up the "Onion" as evidence o f the US taking revenge on FIFA.

Jack Warner, a former vice president of world soccer’s governing body, FIFA, defended himself against corruption charges on Sunday by citing an article from The Onion, apparently unaware that it was satire.

Mr. Warner, 72, who was arrested last week in connection with a wide-ranging criminal investigation by the United States Justice Department, held up the faux news report, calling it evidence of an American conspiracy , in a video statement that was uploaded to the web and then removed later in the day.

The satirical article, published Wednesday under the headline, “ FIFA Frantically Announces 2015 Summer World Cup in the United States ,” mockingly suggested that, to placate American officials, the governing body had added a new tournament, which would begin the very same day.

Holding up a printout of The Onion piece as if it were a genuine news report, Mr. Warner told viewers of the video posted on his personal website , Facebook page and YouTube channel , “All this has stemmed from the failed U.S. bid to host the World Cup.”

“Why is it,” Mr. Warner asked, the American prosecutors “believe that they have a right to the World Cup?”

As dramatic background music swelled, he went on, holding up The Onion article again, to accuse the United States of hypocrisy for accepting the right to host the (entirely fictional) “Summer World Cup, 2015, from the very same organization that they are accusing of being corrupt. That has to be double standards.”

Yeah, I saw that. I'm a little surprised that literallyunbelievable.org/ hasn't said something about it yet. Not the first instance of someone prominent citing The Onion.
