This Spieth lad's a decent sort, isn't he?

I tell you something, sometimes you can spot greatness in defeat, not in victory. Jordan Spieth, tonight, in congratulating and joking with Jason Day in the scorer's hut as the latter finally won a major after several years of near-misses? That's the sort of thing Nicklaus used to do (and Tiger never had to). Jordan Spieth may not go on to win any more majors (although I expect he'll actually win plenty) but he's already demonstrated he's a great guy and is going to remembered already as a great golfer.

And a very deserving world number one (I think, when the new rankings come out tomorrow). Him and McIlroy (and Day, although, sorry, I think Day having got there may drop back a bit now) what a rivalry for the next few years!

Heck, I like the whole "new" group of young men that are now the contenders.

He's a good kid. I think some don't like him here because of the way the media drools over him, but that's not his fault. The media does that with everybody when they're playing the way he is. It's historic the season he's having. They drooled with Tiger and they drooled with Rory and they were hard on them when they went through rough times and they'll be hard on Jordan when he has rough times. And he will. But I think he's a great kid and a great champion, and without a doubt, the best player in the world.

I'd be very proud of him ifΒ Jordan was my son, not just for his golfing abilities but for the way he carries himself.Β Β  You can't hold the way the media coversΒ golf against Spieth, he's not asking for them to do so.Β  I'm sure he and his people are somewhat concerned about a backlash from all the coverage, just as we see him from some individuals.

I am not saying Jordan doesn't seem like a great guy but I am not sure you can spot greatness from this particular defeat. He is friends with Day so it is much easier to be gracious in defeat when it is someone you like and respect.

From an article:

Speaking after his final round on Sunday, Spieth was effusive in his praise for Day, even on the course. He talked their exchange after a particularly long drive from Day on the 11th hole:

β€œThe tee shot on 11. The tee shot on 11, if he gets a little off line there, either way, he has to lay up and it’s probably a par. I thought at the time my ball was still going to be okay. It was going to be good enough to reach the green. Got a tough break in the rough to the side. But when he hit that tee ball and I walked up and saw where it was, I turned to him, I actually out loud turned to him and said holy sh*t! you know, and I yelled it over to him and I said you’ve got to be kidding me. And then he gave me a little bicep curl.”

yes, he does seem to be a nice kid.

I suspect most of them are.

it would be even nicer if the media would just let it show on it's own without making such a stink

seriously?Β  a little thumbs up in appreciation of a good putt?Β  it happens all the time, you'd think the media guys never see this stuff

unless a guy is really in his own zone and doesn't register the other players, I think just about all these guys are being courteous and complimentary to each other for good shots.Β  They all love golf, so they all likely appreciate seeing good shots.Β  I'm assuming, with as active and verbal as Jordan naturally is, that he's likely complimenting a TON of shots for the guys he's paired with.

Don't worry, the pendulum will swing the other way - some over serious golfer will eventually complain that he appears to be TOO verbal and TOO complimentary to others.

Nice exchange.

Wonder if Jordan will change his downswing to gain more distance in the off-season. Will he be tempted?

As to the press, it's a cynical bunch, and Jordan, being somewhat transparent, is a refreshing change. They may tire of the detail eventually.

They definitely made too big of a deal about the thumbs up but otherwise, yeah, he's a nice guy. Can't pick out anything bad about him.

And it's also an unbelievably immature reason not to like someone. It's like 5th grade mentality.

For all the talk about the way the media drools over him (which I think is unfounded), when I got home this morning I watched the CBS telecast of Round 3. By far, the most amazing thing that happened that day was Spieth's back nine charge which -- shockingly -- CBS practically ignored during their Saturday coverage instead choosing to focus on Jones and Finau falling apart. So much for the media over coverage of Spieth.

I think that Jordan may not have that hard of a time is because he's far more mature than Tiger was back then or that Rory is now. There aren't going to be multiple women problems, he's not going to have a meltdown on the course and act like a child, he's not going to go on swearing jags on course, and he's not going to cancel his wedding to another sports star after the invitations go out. And if he does he won't make fun of the unfortunate bride who wasn't afterwards. All of these things happened to Rory and Tiger. Sorry, Spieth haters. He's going to disappoint you because none of that bad behavior is going to happen. He's also not surrounded by YES people which both Rory and especially Tiger was.

He's a class act, quite a few of the pro golfers are. He's just been more in the public eye about it.

He is apparently some 50 something dude with a mancrush on somebody less than half his age. And, walking around on a golf course is hard, or something. That being the case, I suggest you steer clear for your own sanity.. Either that or he is a troll.

Probably a troll. I don't recall Rory ever making fun of Caroline after they broke up.

Well...there was that bit where the media felt Rory and Garcia were laughing about Caroline getting her hair stuck in her tennis racket. It was pretty silly...but you know how the media likes to work up stuff....

^ I believe you. I just don't remember it. The media does like to blow things out of proportion. I try to take things they print or say with a grain of salt. They can take any interview and piece it it like they want to create a controversy that wasn't there to begin with.
