I agree that the needs help to get better.  Yes, AA or any other Anonymous (gambling, sex etc) support groups are all useful to help a person recover.  I don't agree that this is a medical condition that needs help.  Yes, I can see that all of you disagree with me, so let us just agree to disagree.  I personally believe that a medical condition is something where a person is not self-harming by choice.  You can choose to abstain, or not smoke or do drugs.  That doesn't deserve a medical exemption.  If you fall and hurt yourself, even while drunk, I will grant that the injury is a medical exemption.  But the time off to help you control your vice/s should not be a medical exemption.  I am sure he deserves and will get a medical exemption for the depression and that is warranted.

You’re “disagreeing” with experts who classify alcoholism AND depression as a medical thing.

And you’re wrong that he can simply “choose” not to do those things.

Maybe it is just me.  I used to smoke and decided I wanted to quit.  I don't smoke anymore.

Depression was always a medical condition.

I believe the medical association was being too politically correct, or maybe covering all bases by classifying alcoholism as a medical condition.  Yes, it is an addiction, like any other.  Does that make it a medical condition to be treated.  I don't believe that is a fair call.

I understand that I am going to be slated for my views above, but so be it.

And guess what? If you had contracted lung cancer caused by your foolish choice to smoke you would have a medical condition.

Oh brother. Yes, your situation is exactly like everyone else’s.

Yeah, they made a decision that has multi-billion dollar ramifications out of fear of being politically (in)correct.

Ha ha ha.

Far, far more likely that they made a sound medical decision based on their expertise.

But what do they know. You quit smoking that one time… 😛

That is a bullshit call.  Learn to take responsibility for your actions.  This is more about being PC.  Kinda like giving all participants a medal at a race.  It is a race.  Whoever comes first deserves gold.  A participation medal is different to a prize winning medal. ☹️

Let all hope @pganapathy never suffers from a self inflicted addiction of any kind. .

More importantly, let's hope that he does not work in the medical profession.

Imagine his compassionate response to a child who presents with a broken arm after falling off a fence.

The only bullshit in this thread is your own logic.  Reread what you just said.

Everything else aside, I just don't understand what would ever compel someone to say that bolded sentence.

Alright.  Let me just clarify my stance.  I am perfectly OK to get trolled.

Kirk is entitled to medical relief/exemption for the Depression.

If Kirk got injured, say fell and broke his hand as somebody mentioned above, he would be entitled to medical relief/exemption for the hand injury.

I don't believe Kirk should be entitled to relief because he chooses to drink every day.  That as far I am concerned is self-inflicted and not deserving of a medical exemption.

By all means I am happy that he is getting treated for it, and should be free to take a leave of absence, but not be entitled to medical exemption for that.

So, to sum up, Kirk is entitled to medical exemption for his Depression treatment.  He is entitled to take a leave of absence for his alcoholism, but shouldn't get a medical exemption for the alcoholism.

OK, if people think that view is wrong, I am fine with that.

Somebody above mentioned would I as a doctor not treat a kid who fell and broke his arm.  Of course I would.  I have done similar stuff.

My view is very simple, especially for adults.  Yes, accidents happen.  But when you do stupid things to allow it to happen, it isn't smart.  So, for example, getting drunk every night is just going to increase the possibility of you slipping/staggering and falling.  I don't begrudge DJ the injury he had when he slipped on the stairs at the Masters a year or two ago.  That is the definition of an accident.

Intent, negligence, or stupidity doesn't change whether the resultant harm is medical or not.

@pganapathy you aren’t getting “trolled” and you seemingly are not reading the responses to you.

His drinking is likely not “a choice.”

You are coming off incredibly poorly.

I mean this in all seriousness, because I think it is the root cause of the discussion we're having.  Do you understand what an addiction is?

He does not, because he was able to quit smoking once.

    • Hello Golfing Buddies, It has been awhile since I posted but I am the Retired Old Man that asked for advice because I suffered two "T.I.A.'s about switching from playing right handed to playing left handed.  I purchased a Callaway Edge Left handed golf clubs. I changed the grips to oversize grips.  Well, two weeks ago and still at 79 years old, I shot a 44 and 47 on a small course in my hometown.  I am currently changing my shafts from regular flex to Senior flex.  So, you can see' it can be done! So, you other old timers; get with the program! Blessings to all of you. Retired Old Man (Terry Warner)

    • Probably since the golfer has to swing the club back and up. The hands have to move back and up. You can feel them go back and up just by turning the shoulders and bending the right arm, because it brings your hands towards your right shoulder.  The difference is if you maintain width or not. Less width means a shorter feeling swing path so the more you need to lift the arms. Being as someone who gets the right arm bend at 110+ degrees, it's 100% a timing issue. I am use to like a 1.5+ second backswing. It probably should be like 1 second at most. Half a second or more will feel like an eternity. I have had swings where I keep my right arm straighter and I am still trying to time the downswing based on the old tempo.  Ideally, for me, it is probably going to be a much quicker and shorter (in duration) backswing, while keeping the right elbow straighter. Which also means more hinging to get swing length without over swinging.

    • I'm currently recuperating from surgery, so no golf, but have been thinking about this quite a bit. This and the don't overbend the right arm thing. It's hard for me to even pose the position, so I'm not 100% sure, but I feel like it's impossible to have the right humerus along the shirt seam and not overbend your right arm, unless your hands are down near your hips. If the left arm is up at or above the shoulder plane and your right arm is bent less than 90 degrees, then your right humerus has to raise or your hands will get pulled apart. Your left hand can't reach your right hand unless either the right upper arm is up or the right arm is overbent. Is that right? If it is, then focusing on not overbending the right arm would force you to raise the humerus. And actually thinking further on it, if you do overbend your right arm, then you're basically forcing your upper arm down or forcing your left arm to bend. Since (for me at least) bending the left arm too much is not something I think I need to worry about, it means that the bend in the trail arm is really the driving force behind what happens to the right humerus.
