It’s that time of year.  Brand new babies...

Be careful, the eagles are still around!

Close, but not quite.  If it were fully mature, the tail feathers would’ve also been white.  They’re not.  It was very noticeable when they flew off.  Also, though a little tough to tell in the pic, the beak is not yet fully yellow.  Probably about 4 years old...

We have a lot of eagles down here.

How DARE you post such a misleading picture?! Well, it does seem like the eagle on the left is beginning to show some white in its tail feathers. We have bald eagles coming back like crazy around here as well. I had no idea that the white feathers on the head filled in before those on the tail.

And, as someone else mentioned, they are incredibly huge birds.Years ago, there was a road killed deer carcass laying in a cut over corn field across the road from my buddy's house. I was there while he was gone to do something, and stepped out on the front porch to pee. We enjoy peeing outside. While out there, I noticed a lot of crows carrying on across the road near a big oak tree near the corn field. I eased out there, and noticed this big, dark mass up in that oak.

My buddy had told me about the eagle coming around, and to be careful. Because, if it saw you out moving around, even if you were 500 yards away, it was gone! So, I snuck back inside to grab his binoculars, and crept back outside to hide behind my vehicle to get a look at this bird in the tree,

Turned out to be a fully mature bald eagle! It just sat there, stoic, while the crows carried on, just waiting for them to go away. Once they did, it soared on down to the deer carcass. I couldn't see the actual carcass, but I could see most of the eagle. It worked hard! Just hammering away at that deer.

More babies!

Limpkins this time.  The nest is right behind with 2 more chicks.  Mom is collecting mussels from the pond, breaking them open like a champion oyster shucker and feeding the chicks.

Found this little guy at Southern Pines when I almost stepped on him in some pine straw and grasses near a tee box. I thought he was a bottle cap or something as his shell looked to be quite different in the light he was in. I put him down on some grass, teed off, and he had moved, so he was still alive and well. I don't think I've ever really seen a turtle this small.

I named him Terry, in part because I didn't know if he was a him.

We saw a similar snapper creeping across the fairway.  He had to have been 3 feet long, snout to tail.  We did NOT mess with it.

Mine is so boring compared to most of these.  Just munching on some foliage... completely ignoring me.

    • Thank you.  I'll cross it off the list since it isn't going to achieve what I want.
    • While it does turn out that both Tiger and Phil are less squeaky clean than I previously believed, I don't think golf quite has the worst in professional sports.  Or maybe they're better at image management.   Obviously I'm not fond of Phil's issue we're discussing in this thread (or his involvement with LIV) or Tiger's choices of how to drive.  I used to really like Dustin Johnson and, even before the LIV situation, we started to hear rumors that he bought more snow than Seward, although I don't think those stories were ever substantiated.  Meanwhile, I did think of Anthony Kim as the "good, bad boy" of the tour for a while fifteen years ago because of his party persona -- and if it turns out the worst he did was show up hung over to play (barring what one thinks of LIV), that's pretty good.  And I'm still happy he found a way to get his life clean. If we contrast that with some other sports I enjoy, I'm sure we could find a nice long list of NFL players that, at one point in my life, I was quite fond of, we get far worse disappointments (to put it mildly).
    • Answering that properly would land me in hot water, so I'm not going to. I don't think that many people would do that. I think that in certain circumstances many people would be willing to overlook someone doing that. But I was really referring to what I assumed was Tiger's transgressions (cheating on his wife) not Phil's.
    • No! Is a large part of the human population selfish, apathetic and cuts corners in the name of self-preservation 'more than they would like to admit', yes. Degenerate, scum, etc?.. no!! Most humans/men would not grope a woman like Phil is accused of doing (I think he absolutely did). That is scum. I mean what % of men do you think would do that? Seriously??
    • I don't think that is true at all. That is off-topic here, I think.
