Would You Rather… #4: get to choose your three playing partners but be assigned to play 36 holes in one day on a completely random golf course, or get to play 36 holes at the course of your choosing with three completely randomly chosen playing partners?

I would play any goat ranch in the world if I could have some time with my mom again. That being said, I would rather choose the course, Augusta.

Any course? Definitely chose the course and play with random people.

I'm rather solitary any how, so I end up playing with a lot of different characters each year.

Picking the course would be a once in a lifetime chance because I never figure to cough up the kind of money it would take to play one of the world's best courses. Think it would have to be The Old Course.

For those of you choosing the course OR the playing partners, WHERE or WHO are you choosing?

I'd choose the course. I'd likely have to choose a place I haven't played before, though one I know won't disappoint. Pine Valley, most likely, but that place will eat you up if you're not prepared. Augusta National, some part of your game had better be on point, but you could get it around. Cypress Point, perhaps? I'd be good with any of the three, TBH. Whichever had the best forecast for the day, I guess. 😄

I think this one is pretty easy. I would choose the golf course. I'll take my chances with the playing partners.

I am choosing Augusta National. Its not the best of the architectural masterpiece golf courses (though its pretty dang good), but its the least likely the I will ever have the chance to play on otherwise...so that's what I would go with. Plus I could watch the masters every year knowing I played that course and remember what it was like.

I enjoy both but since I can't sit on the fence, I'll take playing with my regular group at a completely random golf course.    This year, of  the 55 rounds I played, we played 40 different courses.

If talking a single day, then take the course - could be any truly bucket list course.  If talking about a weekly occurrence, take the buddies - life's too short.

I'm going to change my answer.  I think I read Erik's question incorrectly.  I'll go for the random course and play with Arnold Palmer, Ben Hogan and Phil Mickelson.  And if we all have to play a goat track in the middle of nowhere so be it... it'll be a change of pace for those 3 guys.

Not a Tiger fan, though I do admire his comeback from multiple surgeries.  Besides I think those other guys would be more interesting to banter with... eh, maybe not Hogan.  But I want to ask him about his book and swing.  And see if I can get him to sip a Arnold Palmer afterwards in the grill.

Two of those guys are dead. You can't play with them.

Then I'll go with Phil Mickelson, Gary McCord and Erik Barzeski.

Funny.  Kinda.  Perhaps I can play with those boys on a Mexican goat  track on Dias de los Muertos.  How do you say "Fore!" in Spanish?  And now I'll try to get Hogan to sip a good tequilla... loosen him up a little and let him try his swing with a sheet of glass fitted over his head.

    • I don’t understand why this concept is hard for people. If the ball is lost, it is lost. It doesn’t matter where they think it should be, or whether they feel like it should be lost. The bottom line is they don’t have a ball in play. I play with some people that will just drop with one stroke (if they even take a stroke at all). Frankly, I don’t care since it’s not a competition, but if they go bragging at the bar later that they shot “85” because I will call them out on it every time.
    • I played in Open Qualifying about 25 years ago. I got to the last hole - I shan't share my score, but it wasn't good. It's a long uphill par 4 with the clubhouse just long left of the green. The clubhouse is out of bounds. I hit my second shot left and it got a firm bounce. Get up there and the clubhouse has a patio. Between the patio and a grass is a little channel filled with pebbles. In that channel is my ball. Channel is in play, but hardly ideal. About 8 inches behind my ball also in the channel is a sprinkler head. So I asked an official who happened to be on the patio whether I got relief or not. He had me set up to it and take a backswing. My club hit the sprinkler head (harder than I would have liked). He asked me to do it again (side note - WTF?) and I hit the sprinkler again. He begrudgingly gave me relief and I dropped it on the grass, pitched on the green and missed from about 8 feet. Holing it would have allowed me to break a certain score threshold I'd rather not flirt with. Following year, I played same course, same event and I played a LOT better. I birdied 17 to go back to even par for the day. Friend of mine told me it looked like even was playing off for last spot, but birdie on 18 would get me through (this was local qualifying, so through to final qualifying). I hit my drive in the heather right, went for it from there and pulled it heather left and wound up making double to not be in the play off (which wound up being about 8 people for 2 spots). But I digress - anyway, as I walked off 18 green I walked over to the patio where the scorers were and noticed that they had painted a white line on the grass next to that Channel, so they fixed my issue from the previous year, albeit in a way that would have been much more detrimental to my score.
