How about DJ not winning the PGA player of the year, actually finished 5th. Interesting formula for determining the award, and DJ did have some bad weeks (missed cuts) that hurt him in this award determination). While he might not like it, I think he has 15 million reasons not to care to much.

The PGA of America announced Justin Thomas had won its points-based Player of the Year award, with Dustin Johnson coming up surprisingly short

A point based system? What the heck. I thought the players voted on this?!

The PGA has a different award than the PGA Tour, guys. C'mon…

Dustin had some pretty bad rounds in there, and some MCs.

This is true. I kinda give kudos to DJ though for that reason. Shooting 80 then two weeks later turns his game around and finishes with winning the FC. Pretty impressive.

Sounds like my game.  Although it is a significantly higher score than DJ's.  😄

Come up with something better.

I think it's fine. It eliminates the Steve Sands whiteboard and eliminates a guy finishing an hour before coverage closes from winning the $15M. Or that year Vijay only had to finish four rounds to claim the prize.

I'm with you.  And the one I feel bad for is the guy who shoots the lowest over the 4 rounds but doesn't get the PGAtour victory and all that comes with it.  To me what was always the important thing was the tournaments.  The "Cup" was always a second rate sideshow.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

Dustin won the event. It was a handicapped event, of sorts, and everyone went in knowing the rules and format.

Someone who shoots 63 might lose a match play round… because the format isn't traditional stroke play where everyone starts at E for the week.

I understand why the OWGR does what they do, but at the same time, it's not entirely fair to Dustin Johnson. In the event in which he was playing, he led comfortably. Should he try to win the "shadow leaderboard" too? Why? What about times that strategy would conflict with the "I have a five-shot lead" strategy?

Well, only once since they switched to this format did the guy who won low gross not also win low net. So there's that.  Also the last sentence is what they're trying to avoid -- which I think is your point.

I am probably forgetting something, but for not getting the PGA Tour victory, what benefits are there to winning a tour event that you don't get from getting into the tour championship?  I think two years exemption vs one, plus one of your 20 needed for lifetime membership -- but I doubt (and I haven't checked) there are that many who get close to lifetime, but don't get it, and fall off the tour.  Everyone making the tour championship gets a Masters invite, so that part isn't missing.

Every year I've liked the staggered start Tour Championship more. I think it strikes a nice balance between valuing the regular season, playoffs, and play in the event itself. Really the only thing you could talk me into is some sort of 5-day event where you play two stroke play rounds, then play match play between the top 8. But that's probably more effort than it's worth, and kind of hokey to mix formats like that.

How about leave the tournaments like real tournaments and give the Cup and the money to the guy with the lowest aggregate score over the playoff events?  That gives you 2 leaderboard after the first event.  2 leaderboards, twice as much interest and tension.  And some interesting tactical dilemmas when the tourney leaderboard might indicate one decision while the Cup leaderboard might cut the other way.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

People don’t like two leaderboards and two trophies. And the leader might be five groups from the last. Or from the first, which isn’t good.

You’re almost just suggesting the old format.

I don't really care "what people like" because I doubt we even know if people like this monstrosity.  I'm just a traditionalist with the strange idea that the guy that takes the fewest actual strokes in a stroke play tournament should win.  Tradition usually reasserts itself in golf when they stray, and I hope this becomes another such instance.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

Myself, I've never liked the whole Fed-Ex cup thing.  When it first hit the scene I was hoping it was a one-year wonder.  It struck me as gimmicky.  I'd rather follow Strokes Gained stats than Fed-Ex Cup points.  Besides, I'm more of a USPS guy...

I'm making two points:

  • It was noted several times that people didn't like the "two prizes" or "two leaderboards" when they switched the format. You have proposed that they almost just go back to that.
  • The people in charge "like" this format, so it's not going to change.

It's not a traditional stroke play tournament. It's handicapped.

I wouldn't hold your breath waiting on that one. 😄

They've gotten to where they are by refinement. They've tried other formats, and revised/refined it to this. You're essentially proposing they go back to version 1.

And what if someone doesn't make the cut in an event? Does he get to keep playing because he needs to get four rounds in to see where he stands in the final event?

You are entitled to like it.  I'm entitled to despise it.  As to your cut question, if you miss a cut in a playoff event you are out of the Cup competition.  Is that so strange?

    • Day 430 - 2025-12-04 Slow motion backswings (with chippy shots) with AlmostGolf balls.
    • Day 24 (4 Dec 25) - Spent about an hour working with the new 55° wedge in the backyard.  Kept all shots to under 20yds.  Big focus - not decelerating thru downswing and keeping speed up with abbreviated backswing.  Nothing like hitting a low flighted chip with plenty of check spin and then purpose to float a pitch of similar distance.
    • Day 114 12-4 Put some work in on backswing, moving the hips correctly, then feeling over to lead side. Didn't hit any balls was just focused on keeping flowy and moving better. I'll probably do another session tonight and add in some foam balls.

You are not making sense.
