I’m relatively new to golf and have seen most videos covering most topics. A shot I was up against for the 1st time and it was a difficult one was the green was up a hill but my ball was also on a down slope in a little valley. What would be the best technique to get enough loft to get it on the green other than suggesting lob wedge

I'll be interested to hear comments on this as well.  My opinion (take with a grain of salt since I am a High Handicap with little talent/skill) is that the down-hill lie reduces the loft which is why I would think taking the lob-wedge makes sense.   But since you did not want to hear "Lob Wedge" my only other strategy has been, when possible, to chip a little side-ways to allow for a little more loft in the club.  That is not necessarily towards the pin but hopefully gets on the putting surface for a long putt verses a second chip/pitch.

Well, okay, but that's the first thing. Choose the club with the most loft.

Beyond that? Put the ball forward in your stance, lower the handle, and don't drag the handle through the shot.

Try opening up a wedge and following the slope.  That will add back some of the loft.

Yeah I realise you need loft👍🏼, that may help but this green was at least 5ft elevated and only 4ft In front so the ball had to go quite high whilst being on a down slope, horrible shot!

Probably the best thing to do!

The other thing, this is a relatively difficult shot.  The ball will fly lower than it normally would with whichever club you use.  It will roll out further.  This is not a shot to get "cute" with, accept that a shot that gets on the green is a good one.

Yeah I’d take green all day. Even though I’d take green all day from most places haha.

The next time you play the hole maybe, if it's there, find a spot in the fairway, perhaps farther from the green, that is more level.  Course management.  Otherwise, stay with the shot and allow for lots of roll-out.  There's a short par 4 hole on one of the courses I play a lot that if you hit a hybrid off the tee you'll end up on a downhill lie to a green about 40 feet above you.  I lay up with a 6 or 7 iron to a flat spot and still have a wedge in, but much easier to finesse.

A thought for high hdcp'rs.
Punch a 9 or 8 iron into the hill and let it hop up onto the green surface.

I was actually in a green side bunker, got out of it but it rolled of the back leading to that shot, the bunker pretty much cost me 3 strokes

That sounds like an option!

If the fringe isn't heavy try experimenting with putting it or hitting a bump and run with a 5 or 6 iron.
