This is bizarre ...

Quote

Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm were discussing something on the range before teeing off in the second round of the Scottish Open. A completely unremarkable scene. Until a fearless fan wandered into frame and got to work robbing Rory blind, right in front of his face.

When I see something like this I wonder if it's staged, l guess it's not. He even screwed up getting it out of the bag. And just casually goes back and gets it. Lol. I wonder if he did a runner afterwards.

I think there may be something wrong with that fella. Sincerely. Not in a funny way, but seriously… he may be mentally challenged or something, whatever you consider the politically correct terminology in your area of the world.

Security at the event is a bit underwhelming.

Actually pretty rough to watch. Especially that second, longer version.

It reminds me of a particular person I used to know.

Hope the guy gets some help.

I really wonder what that person was thinking.  When I first heard of this story, I thought of the scene from the second Ocean's Eleven movie where they narrated some people who tried to rob a casino and (going from memory:  other than the first one, I don't think I've seen the other four more than once each) one of them got a few steps away before being apprehended.

I guess security at these events isn't as big because they aren't expecting something like this to happen.  There's security at, say, NBA games because Rod Artest type events aren't unheard of.

Years ago I was a walking scorer at the Womens US Open.  Inside the ropes is restricted to players, caddies, USGA officials, walking scorer, standard bearer, tv people and security.  On the back nine I noticed another guy had joined us.  I mentioned it to the USGA official who promptly escorted him outside the ropes.  Strange thing was after the round was over, I was walking back to the clubhouse and there he was helping Nancy Lopez get her clubs in the car.  Strange things can happen.

Security did a great job.

The guy is obviously "ill" and no-one made  a huge fuss or jumped him. The players kept their cool. They did the right thing to avoid escalating the problem.

You can't assume that everyone has a gun and is out to kill. Otherwise no-one would get within a mile of the players.  This is Scotland.

What if he had haggis? That could be considered a deadly weapon.

Even a lump of it which isn't frozen can kill.

They were slow to react and had to be flagged down. They handled it appropriately once they got there. I did not imply the should have been more aggressive.
