TST Explores the ShotScope H4 (Stats Tracking Device) and Pro LX Rangefinder

@billchao do you usually play the same course or do you play many different ones?

Because I'm curious if you use the rangefinder more because you know the course and are familiar with the greens or if there was a different reason.

You can use the rangefinder on spots around greens. The H4 gives me front, back, and middle and the rangefinder is usually good enough for that. It’s not as detailed as my Garmin which has the whole green mapped out and I don’t even use that anymore.

We have recently released full course aerial maps and this feature is now available to all Shot Scope users via the Shot Scope app. If you own a Shot Scope watch, handheld, or laser rangefinder you can now get access to aerial maps.

GPS mode allows current Shot Scope users to view an overhead map of the course whilst they play. The GPS distances update as the golfer moves around the course.

In addition, golfers will be able to measure to any point on the course by simply tapping on the map. This allows for players to measure distances to hazards, layup points, and doglegs as well as receiving accurate yardages to the front, middle, and back of every green.

Preview mode allows golfers to view any course regardless of their location and access a bird’s eye view of every hole. Use this to plan your round before you play and devise a strategy to give yourself the best chance of playing well.

In this mode you will not be able to access front, middle, and back distances to greens. However, you can measure to points on the course by tapping anywhere on the map. Players will receive distances from the tee box to their chosen point, and from that point to the green.

I can try this tomorrow on hole 5 at NKGC when I play with @Bob M. It’s a blind tee shot and there are hazards left and right.

You can do the preview mode from home.

I would be more likely to use in "Preview" mode from home.  I try to keep away from the phone on the course.  I know a lot of people use different apps on the phone but I would prefer simply to throw it in the bag on "DND" for the duration of the round.

Has it always displayed SG on individual shots when you look at your rounds on the computer? I don't know how I've never noticed it until today.

I don't think I've noticed that. But I didn't ever really click into a specific hole from the dashboard before. I see where it is there, though.

It’s been on there since I got the H4 at least. It’s fun, and sometimes depressing, to look at individual shots.

I like to look at the silver lining. Like oh, that shot didn’t cost me nearly as many strokes as I thought it did.

I’m impressed with how robust this discussion has been and would appreciate any opinions. If “cost were not an issue” would you still choose the Shot Scope platform (and X5 watch) over Arccos?

I’ve never used Arccos so maybe a little lack of actual experience but I would stay with the ShotScope.

First, I do not mind tagging the club and am not sure I would trust the Bluetooth on Arccos to catch every swing, maybe it would, tagging is easy so I’m OK with that.

The Arccos Club tags require occasional battery changes while the SS just needs a recharge of the  GPS unit. I would hate to golf a round and learn later the batteries died.  Also there is on-going cost for the replacement batteries.

I think a lot of it will be personal preference.

Note for @ChetlovesMer: I think I avoided typos above!  At lest that iz mi hope. 🤪

I would. I reviewed Arccos for the site when it first came out. It’s improved since then but there are still issues plus the subscription. The H4 tags are much lighter and smaller and stay on well (unlike Game Golf).  Tagging is easy and editing your round is easy. @Bob M has the watch and he likes that too.

Shot Scope offered existing users a really good deal on the X5 earlier this year when they were first released. Although some reported problems, mine has worked well from the get-go and the firmware updates have been timely and fixed problems which users had experienced. Based on how they have handled the problems several users did report, I would grade Shot Scope's customer support as top notch.

I have never used Arccos, but having to pay a subscription fee on an ongoing basis was a negative for me. I have always worn a watch when I play anyway, so it feels pretty natural.

I've been a Shotscope user since the V2 watch, and I would take their platform over any of the other current competitors. Right now I have an H4 handheld, and an X5 watch. I bought the watch with the same offer @Bob M got for existing users, also applied the discount code from the sidebar on this site. I purchased the watch because I kept losing (and finding after searching the course) the H4 handheld. I'm not sure which device I will eventually stick with.

I've used Garmin products before, and I think their watches are really nice. I would rate them as superior to Shotscope from a pure hardware perspective. However the Garmin CT10 tags sucked and cost a lot, and I didn't think the Garmin Golf platform was very good. I have never had an issue with any Shotscope hardware I have used, even if it is a little more "plasticky".

As far as the X5 watch goes, it's not perfect. From a hardware quality perspective, it has a nicer screen, improved strap, and feels solid and well made. I have not had any issues with it, but I find using the touch screen is slower than the 4-button configuration of previous watches and H4 handheld.

    • A 5400 yd course is not that short for gents driving it 160 yards considering the approach shot lengths they are going to be faced with on Par 4s.  Also, for the course you are referring to I estimate the Par 4s have to average longer than 260 yds, because the Par 5s are 800 yds or so, and if there are four Par 3s averaging 130 the total is 1320 yds.  This leaves 4080 yds remaining for 12 Par 4s.  That is an average of 340 per hole. Anyway, if there are super seniors driving it only 160ish and breaking 80 consistently, they must be elite/exceptional in other aspects of their games.  I play a lot of golf with 65-75 yr old seniors on a 5400 yd course.  They all drive it 180-200 or so, but many are slicers and poor iron players.  None can break 80. I am 66 and drive it 200 yds.  My average score is 76.  On that course my average approach shot on Par 4s is 125 yds.  The ten Par 4s average 313 yds.  By that comparison the 160 yd driver of the ball would have 165 left when attempting GIR on those holes.
    • I don't think you can snag lpga.golf without the actual LPGA having a reasonable claim to it. You can find a ton of articles of things like this, but basically: 5 Domain Name Battles of the Early Web At the dawn of the world wide web, early adopters were scooping up domain names like crazy. Which led to quite a few battles over everything from MTV.com You could buy it, though, and hope the LPGA will give you a thousand bucks for it, or tickets to an event, or something like that. It'd certainly be cheaper than suing you to get it back, even though they'd likely win. As for whether women and golfers can learn that ".golf" is a valid domain, I think that's up to you knowing your audience. My daughter has natalie.golf and I have erik.golf.
