I can’t afford the current sticker prices on these new top end drivers. Do you have any suggestions on an older version that has most of the current technology but at a lower cost?  I watched a Rick Shiel’s video on YouTube about this. He suggested the Taylormade M1 or the Ping G400.  Are these good?  Any others?  Thanks

I’ve been playing a used Callaway Epic Flash all year. You can get them pretty cheap now on either eBay or Callaway pre-owned.

The Taylormade M2 seems to be a good seller.   One in my group sports it and loves it.

@BCC5266 OK, on the used end I would def recommend anything from Ping G30 (still my current gamer) up through G400.

Realize you’re looking for used, but there are a lot of deals on new clubs right now due to newer models coming out.  E.g. $299 for Ping G410, $299 for Mizuno ST 220.  I’m frugal myself, but did pull the trigger on a Mizuno STZ 220 when the deal started.

@BCC5266 Just saw this and thought you might be interested… brand new 2021 PXG drivers for sale at $120 (on their site).  I don’t know much about them personally, but hear they’re good.  I can’t imagine there’s a better deal out there right now.

I'm with those that like the M2. In my opinion it's kind of Taylormade's peak.

Another option is you can get a brand spanking new PXG Gen 4 driver right now for $189.00. I haven't personally played one but I know that @Vinsk has one and seems to love it. I do play the Gen 4 PXG 3-wood and I absolutely do like that club.

You know you can still buy an M4 brand new direct from TaylorMade for $300. The M4 is almost the same as the M2 except it has the first generation of "Twist Face" to help a little more with dispersion on off center hit... well it's supposed to anyway. I went to their web site and checked to see if they still had them.

The Sim 2 Max is also still available for $450.

I play the Sim Max and it's probably the best driver I've owned. I didn't see any on the web site. They were going for $400 last Oct. so if you see any in the stores they'll be around $350 - 375.

I know I'm not the only one.

But personally I can't stand the look of the twist face. It looks like I'm going to hit the ball of my left shin. I was a Taylormade driver fan until they came out with twist face.

I would look into any of the Callaway Epic/Epic Flash. Great drivers. I switched from the M2 to the Epic years ago and haven't looked back.

@BCC5266 - the PXG GEN4 (last year's) drivers are on sale for $189 as well. I have a PXG 3-wood and hybrid and they perform well, and value is fantastic.

Probably any driver head made by one of the major manufacturers in the past 10 years will work fine.  The tough part is finding a shaft that works with your swing and the club head.

I love my old SLDR (previous to the M1) and currently play the G400 SFT.  I picked up the Ping at a local course that was struggling and the owner gave me the $224 out the door price.  Can say the club with the stock Regular shaft works for me.  If you have the opportunity take  @iacas  up on his offer:

    • the rules have changed, but this would fall under 11.2 in the current rules.  General Penalty to any player who deliberately deflects a ball in motion, and you must replay the putt.
    • Day 250 4-29 Getting chest through with speed on downswing and wrist arch. Also worked on some moving the pelvis slightly away in the backswing. Feel like im going too fast and long, looks like it on the recordings too.
    • Interesting that it's no penalty, but then again, I can't imagine someone would purposefully put their foot out there in this situation or one like it.  And then there was the time someone purposefully deflected his own ball during a major, but that's very different too. The only time I can recall a ball I hit hitting another player or their equipment was ages ago -- over a decade and a half ago.  I had a 3' putt for an 89 and someone (a random pairing, not someone I knew) decided it was a good time for goaltending practice.  That wouldn't fall under this rule, though (and it wasn't in a tournament anyway). Thanks for continuing to share these, Dave!  I always find these interesting.
    • Day 51 (29 Apr 26) - Worked with a few of the golf team kids plus my grandson (he’s too young for the team as it’s middle-high school age and he’ll be 10 Sat).  He put on a small hitting clinic (hitting off the same tees as the rest of the boys) - one of the older kids called him a “coach”.  Worked in a few shots for myself - had the light bag: driver, 7w, 4 - 6 - 8 - Pw - Sw (DCI 962’s except the Sw a 981) and Zebra putter….got in some great tee shots, a couple of recovery and an awesome up and down for bogie: 55 yds out, hitting 4th shot due to 2nd getting tangled in limbs - see the window I need to hit for a tight spinner with the Sw - nail it to a postage letter distance from the cup for a tap in bogie….my kind of practice.
    • Day 21, April 29.  Before going to work this morning, I worked in my indoor practice room for 20 minutes.   This was entirely 6-iron shots with the usual step.  Video yesterday showed me that I'm still straightening my trail leg too much (leading to the backswing length issue I've been working to fix), so I focused on not doing that in my rehearsal swings.
