Where do you stand on these?
  1. Was Fuzzy Zoeller joking when he said "don't let him serve fried chicken... or collard greens or whatever they like to eat?"
  2. Should Augusta National admit women as Martha Burk wished?
  3. Should Casey Martin have been allowed to ride on the PGA Tour?
My answers?

Fuzzy may have been joking in his head, but he should have been smart enough to know that nobody would have taken it that way. I didn't, and it's sad that this is how he'll be remembered.

If we can have an NAACP, I say we should be allowed to have an NAAWP. Augusta National isn't a federal government program. Can I join NOW? (Maybe I can, I dunno, but you get the point.) The club is set up as it is. Start your own club, Martha.

I think that walking is part of the game. Start down the slippery slope of allowing for things with handicaps and someone with a medical degree will come along and declare the putting yips a mental health issue and argue that two putts should be given to players who qualify on every green, and every putt inside five feet. The game, at that level, is a walking game. Nothing was stopping Casey from earning a living in the game of golf, but doing so on the PGA Tour, in competition, no.

1) Fuzzy crossed the line. Probably didn't mean anything by it. Probably thought he was being funny. Says something about him when he thinks that kind of comment is funny.

2) I agree...Martha start your own club. If our country can have places like "Curves" - the workout place for women only, why can't private golf clubs choose to have a membership of men only. Not

3) Walking is part of the game. It kills me to even watch the Senior Pros (even though it is understandable) ride their carts from shot to shot. It takes away from what the game was meant to be about.

1. I don't think he was kidding. It's a natural redneck reaction when a young stud comes and takes over. You're trying to insult him on other fields than golf course, since you can't beat him there.
2. No. No. No. Oh, by the way - did I say "No" ?
3. No. As "cold" and "heartless" it might sound - if you don't have phisical ability to play the game (walking IS part of it) - S.O.L. Should I sue PGA, because my body's limitations don't allow me to swing good enough to play there?

1. I agree with you 100%

2. Augusta National, I believe, has already allowed a woman member.  See Dr.

Condoleeza Rice.

3. No one is " entitled" to be a PGA Tour Pro, simply because he finished high in a US Open, and played on the same college golf team with Tiger Woods. The PGA Tour is  a private association whose members have earned their admission through their paying skills, and have agreed to abide by the rules. It is not open to the public.

Oops ! sorry. Old post..

Now I'm going to have to do some digging, as I've only been on the board for 8 years.

I wonder what other hidden gems I, errr I mean we, can uncover.
I hope there aren't any old blackface photo's, or posts that are offensive in a much more PC world.

When I read abour Fuzzy's remark, I thought it was a joke on his part. More of a initiation, or a welcoming remark.

I believe Agusta National already has a female member. Dr. Rice?.

As for Casey, I am pro "rights for the handicapped". Not sure how much advantage a cart gave him over the healthy players. He still had to make the shots, like everyone else. Pro golf is supposed to be a game of integrity. I tend to think part of that integrity also includes looking out for the less fortunate..

It gives him a huge advantage. Virtually every PGA Tour player knows that walking 6 rounds a week is a huge part of the game.

Talk about a blast from the past! But, since others have chimes in, I guess I will too.

I do think Fuzzy was joking, as tone deaf as it was. He may have been referring to when he hosted the Masters Champions dinner. For those who don't know, the reigning Masters champ picks the menu for the following year's dinner. I read that the chef was after Fuzzy like crazy for what he wanted for the dinner, and Fuzzy kept putting him off saying he'd take care of it. According to the article, Fuzzy showed up with a trunk full of Big Macs and fries from the local McDonald's! He told the chef to heat them up, plate them up, and serve them!

I think Martha Burke's protest might have drawn a dozen people total. It's their club, their rules! I also read an article where the author went to Augusta at the invitation of a member, and wrote that there were women everywhere! True, they were all spouses or guests of members, but there was no shortage of women on the premises. Hey, I'm a guy and I can't get into Augusta. I should be offended!

Casey Martin was a tough case but again, rules are rules! You have to walk to play on the Tour. I read another article where the author interviewed, I think it was Corey Pavin. One of the subjects brought up was the "athleticism" of golf. Pavin said that one thing you need to be is a really good walker! Sounds simple, but some people just can't do that. He mentioned playing in pro-ams with pro football players, who would really start to drag ass about #14 or #15 on a hot day! They just aren't used to being on their feet that long.

    • Never practiced golf when I was young and the only lesson ever taken was a driver lesson. I feel like I'm improving every year. However, the numbers don't support my feeling about improving. I usually drop to 12-13 during the summer while playing the familiar courses around home and then go on golf trips in the fall to new courses and increase to end the year between 15-17. Been a similar story for a number of years now but hey, it's the best thing there is in life so not too bothered but reaching 9.9 is the objective every year. Maybe a few lessons and practice could help me achieve it since I pretty much have no idea what I'm doing, just playing and never practice.
    • I am semi-loyal. Usually buy four dozen of one ball and only play that until out and then determine whether to continue or try another one. Since starting my semi-loyal path to success, I've been playing the below, not in order: ProV1 ProV1x ProV1x left dash AVX Bridgestone BXS Srixon Z-star XV I am not sure if it has helped anything, but it gives a bit of confidence knowing that it at least is not the ball (while using the same one) that gives different results so one thing less to mind about I guess. On the level that I am, not sure whether it makes much difference but will continue since I have to play something so might as well go with the same ball for a number of rounds. Edit: favorite is probably the BXS followed by ProV1/Srixon Z-star XV. Haven't got any numbers to back it up but just by feel.
    • Will not do it by myself, going to the pro shop I usually use after Cristmas for input and actually doing the changes, if any, but wanted to get some thoughts on whether this was worthwhile out of curiosity.
    • In terms of ball striking, not really. Ball striking being how good you are at hitting the center of the clubface with the swing path you want and the loft you want to present at impact.  In terms of getting better launch conditions for the current swing you have, it is debatable.  It depends on how you swing and what your current launch conditions are at. These are fine tuning mechanisms not significant changes. They might not even be the correct fine tuning you need. I would go spend the $100 to $150 dollars in getting a club fitting over potentially wasting money on changes that ChatGPT gave you.  New grips are important. Yes, it can affect swing weight, but it is personal preference. Swing weight is just one component.  Overall weight effects the feel. The type of golf shaft effects the feel of the club in the swing. Swing weight effects the feel. You can add so much extra weight to get the swing weight correct and it will feel completely different because the total weight went up. Imagine swinging a 5lb stick versus a 15lb stick. They could be balanced the same (swing weight), but one will take substantially more effort to move.  I would almost say swing weight is an old school way of fitting clubs. Now, with launch monitors, you could just fit the golfer. You could have two golfers with the same swing speed that want completely different swing weight. It is just personal preference. You can only tell that by swinging a golf club.
    • Thanks for the comments. I fully understand that these changes won't make any big difference compared to getting a flawless swing but looking to give myself the best chance of success at where I am and hopefully lessons will improve the swing along the way. Can these changes make minor improvements to ball striking and misses then that's fine. From what I understood about changing the grips, which is to avoid them slipping in warm and humid conditions, is that it will affect the swing weight since midsize are heavier than regular and so therefore adding weight to the club head would be required to avoid a change of feel in the club compared to before?
