Amazing how a post becomes more relevant as time goes on, just upgraded my iron set after 10yrs to Cobra F9 Speed back's, to find my new PW is 44, I now need 4 extra wedges, GW 48, AW 52, SW 56 and LW 60, So 5 Wedges are now the normal, of course its all bullshit, the manufactures just increased the lofts and we left to fill the gap and the bottom end of the set.

PW, SW and 60 here.

I barely use my 60 degree wedge...I don't think I've used it once this year other than at the range.

I think you meant to say "decreased".

My bag is an ever-changing combination of clubs.

A mix I am forever tinkering with.

I have 45, 49, 52, 56.  I am not entirely satisfied with this setup, partly because I just do not consistently make solid contact with the 49.  But I have been getting much more confident with hitting the 56 degree sand wedge.  I may actually put the 60 back in the bag because my friends like courses that are shorter than what I would prefer.

Question: How confident would you be to chip with something like this?

I now have four wedges: my PW (don’t know the loft), then a 50 that I just put in the bag, then 54 and 58. The 50 and 54 are my money clubs, the 54 I already knew, but I hit some great shots with the 50 today.

I think I’d do well with a 76 degree wedge, although I tend to open the face just a hair with my wedges. I think if I do that with this club, the ball would hit me. Not ideal. And my coach doesn’t like 60 degree wedges, so he definitely wouldn’t approve of this. He’d probably be a bit amused though!

45° (PW), 50° (AW), 54°, and 60° is all I carry. I enjoy hitting 1/2 and 3/4 shots, dead handed shots, etc.

Iron set wedges are 44(Pw) and 49(aw)

vokeys are 54s and 60k

set wedges are mainly full Shots. The 54 does everything inside 75 yards except bunkers and if I’m short sided in rough (that’s the k) I’m thinking of getting new irons next spring but wondering if I’ll have to get a 50 degree wedge (will most likely drop my 4h if 5i is long enough) with all of these new long hitting irons. Rogue x has a 46 degree gap wedge!

Driver: Callaway Mavrik 10*

Wood: Callaway Epic Flash 17*

Hybrid: Callaway Mavrik 20*

Irons: Callaway Rogue X 5i-GW

Wedges: Vokey SM8 54*S and 58*K

Putter: Ping Prime Tyne 4

No. I only have 3: 48, 54, and 60. I’d rather have more clubs at the longer end of the bag. It is generally far easier to finesse a wedge than a long club. Additionally, when you finesse a wedge, it’s easier to retain spin and hold the green. Conversely, when taking something off a longer club, it’s harder to maintain spin and adequate landing angle to retain the green. Therefore, I’d rather have more opportunities at a stock number on the longer end of the bag than carry an additional wedge.

Since I recently reentered the game after 20 yrs off and no longer belong to a club with great conditions at home and when visiting,  I am playing 4 wedges, 46, 50, 54, and 60, with the 50 and 60 being less bouncy than the 46 & 54, and the 46 has slightly less bounce than the 54.. My bag has been a bit of a conundrum for me, trying to figure out what fits me now, I don't even know my swing with the "New" balls.  Tried a lot of things. Right now I am loving a SLDR 12 and 17 degree along with a SLDR S 21 degree wood. They are rockets, and the SLDR's are easier to work than any other wood I have tried all year. Old Mizuno  MX-20 irons in 4-9. I really don't see any advantage in carrying another wedge unless you are playing a course with some really weird variables where you can't manufacture shots with fewer wedges, properly gapped with well considered bounces and grinds..

Since I carry the Callaway Mavrik iron set (4-AW), which is extremely strong lofted, I carry 5 wedges. From set: PW (41 dgr), AW (46 dgr) and Cobra King Pur 52, 56 and 60. Very pleased with the gapping now. Covers everything from 160 yards and in.

In the bag: Callaway Mavrik SZ 10,5 driver (X stiff), Cobra King 4 wood (Stiff, 2006 model), Callaway Mavrik irons 4 - P+A (stiff), Cobra King Pur wedges 52, 56 and 60 (stiff) and Odessey white steel putter.  Very happy with the set and the gapping.

    • Is anyone going to be there?  I won a couple tickets for Saturday.  Likely spend a half day walking and watching.
    • Day 298 - 2025-07-25 Got some work in after a lesson at Whispering Woods. I hit one SPICY shot during the lesson, too, ha ha.
    • They need to mark it or declare it as such. Even just a thing on the back of the scorecard would do.
    • There are utilities buried along there. I did talk to the one of the course owners today and he said it was OB. When I mentioned "the committee" (USGA and R&A terminology) it didn't seem to register with him.
    • Have played 3 serts of 18 holes since Monday and last night added 6 holes but had to quit because it got dark on us.    My last time I shot a 56 on the front nine with 16 puts. I shot a 57 with 16 puts on the back 9.  I am ordering a 60* Pure Spin Wedge this Tuesday that I found on Ebay.  I am having trouble controlling my drives, but a lot of it is being nervous and still just starting to relax a little.  I am planning on playing Men's Senior this coming Tuesday.  It is definitely an adventure but so far it has been worth it.  My back pain (lower) is gone, and my leg cramps are almosrt gone.  My putting is improving.  Okay, Golfers: As of this morning, starting on January 1, 2025: Steps = 1,035,587 ; MIles = 472.14 ; Stairs = 1, 664 Not bad for a 78 year old golfer that is 5'10"and 150 pounds.  I will quit bragging for now and say a big "Thank You" for all your encouragement.  Will play a little more over the next few weeks and see if I can lower the score.  I even have a book: "Lowest Score Wins" by Erik J. Barzeski & David Wedzik; I think I have seen some strategies somewhere inside. 😄   Thanks,  Retired Old Man, Terry
