I'm not making any comments. Just posting some photos. There are differences, you bet, starting with "the guy on the left actually seems to win shit from time to time." :-)

Oh, and I recorded the Rory video with my phone from the TV, so it moves around a little bit (i.e. the lines aren't really great - even at P1 they've moved a little bit).

There are differences, but the similarities are uncanny. Great post!

I don't really understand the point of this post?  All swings are going to have some similarity.

I think the point is that if you just look at a golf swing without knowing what that swing is called or what name it has things might seem different. Or the swing on the right isn't as screwy as people think it is.

to me it seems rory is a bit of a two planer, not getting his hands as deep as charlie, but in the downswing he re-orients his swing inside more. I think having a two plane swing gives Rory a bit more leverage in his swing, because its more upright, i think he gets more power that way. It also looks like Rory's is a bit more free flowing than Charlies. Especially in the follow through, I think Rory does a better job getting around more. Charlies club is more upright in the follow through than in the backswing. Rory's pretty much matchs his backswing. Not sure if he gets better extension or not, or if thats a side effect of having deeper hands.

Charlie gets much more depth in the backswing then lifts to the same position as Rory. Probably the only difference I can see. I love Rory's swing except his release through the ball, especially with longer clubs, he can get really handsy with the driver.

Rory is a one planer for sure. That's why Charlie's S&T; looks so similar. I agree with Phil, great swings have a lot of similarity.

Does anyone know what kind of grip Rory uses (strong, weak)? Also the video for Rory his wrists are a blur that is a shame because it would be great to see the wrist conditions.

Hey, I know for a fact the guy on the right has won a couple Wednesday pro-ams :-D Love Rory's P1 neck/eye tilts. This swing looks similar but I think in general the differences are that Rory doesn't go quite as far forward with the lower center, little more rotary with a deeper left arm at P5-6.
Probably the only difference I can see.
Good observation, again left arm is deeper, "behind", on the downswing, going to produce a more CF release. Misses tend to be left on bad days, good days are a straight push.

Yeah that CF release killed him at Augusta. If he could just get the exit a little more left after impact, surely he'd hit a much straighter ball

Fairly strong at Augusta.  Seemed a touch more neutral at the US Open.  Still fairly strong though.

Rory's shoulder plane is steeper meaning hands go higher.  Hands and shoulders are pretty much the same as Charlie's.

    • I believe that losing a tour card is too extreme but definitely agree that more needs to be done to prevent slow play.
    • Its way past time both tours  have  major  penalties for  slow  play. I  hate  it when they say" This group is  on the  clock". Big damn deal. Issue  penalties. Maybe Hull is a  bit too harsh but  its time a slew  of  2 stroke  penalties start  being  issued.     Charley Hull is fed up with slow play on the LPGA, so she offered a ‘ruthless’ solution “I’m quite ruthless, but I said, ‘Listen, if you get three bad timings, every time it’s a tee shot penalty; if you have three of them, you lose your Tour card instantly.’ I’m sure that would hurry a lot of people up, and they won’t want to lose their Tour card. That would kill the slow play, but they would never do that.” Who knows if that will work. But if it does not, maybe the PGA Tour should adopt Hull’s idea. The LPGA should, too, or at least assess penalty strokes for slow play. Five-hour rounds for a final group on Sunday is unacceptable and a quick way to lose interest and engagement from fans.

    • A hair under 190. It was pretty downhill, though, so I think we were playing between 180-185 to the pin. My 6 iron went 187 according to shot scope and ended up 18 feet away.
    • That's a tough pin on 14 at TR, had to make the hole play much longer, how far was that shot? I've only played that hole with a front pin.
