Unfortunately for me, it doesn't take care of 8's on a par 5.

Sure it does.  Your ESC max is 7 on any individual hole..... :-)

I read that, but figured it was for par 4.

Well, that knocks me down to 94 (ESC) rather than 95. I'm celebrating by going to lunch.

Yup.

8's are max if your course 'cap is over 20, 7's if its between 10 and 20, and double bogeys if it's below 10.

Unless you're playing tees with a slope of 155?!?!?!

It's for any hole, man. Read up on ESC. You've probably been applying it incorrectly. :)

Plus, ESC takes care of 10s.

Thank goodness! ESC is my friend :-)

Only if you value a lower handicap index over your chances in any handicapped event or match you might play. ;-)

Admittedly, I have not. Back to reading the rules. . .

I don't play in events like that often, so yes I'd rather have the lower index.

Up another 0.2.

I jumped from 2.6 to 3.5.     Sadly, this was expected because my game has been a complete mess from the tee thanks to a driver purchase that wasn't right for me.  This brought on a painful experiment with me trying to completely change my ball flight.   I returned that driver and bought one that works.......  I think I'm back baby!!

Experiment OVER......  I am going back to my comfort zone and my index will POSITIVELY drop before November 1st when GHIN shuts down for winter.  GUARAN-FN-TEED!!!!!  You heard it here first!! LOL

Still haven't made it to 20 scores posted.  My 'faux' handicap is artificially high thanks to a few good rounds.  Today's 87 is more representative than my last outing's 78.

Down from 6.7, well it's a definite move in the right direction and it really only took a couple good rounds at the end of the period to do it. I'm swinging the club probably the best I have all year so I think I may wind up with a few really low ones in the near future and get back down to 5.0 or lower.

  • 2 weeks later...

Until just a few days ago, the 9 hole course I play didn't have a rating or slope. Fortunately, I saved and dated most of my scorecards for the year and now that the course has been rated, was considering keeping track.

I'm obviously a newbie at this so I was hoping someone could help and perhaps offer some advice. I have done some research but there seems to be some discrepancy between sources. Some of the online calculators just average every score instead of using the lowest sets of scores.

The USGA reference manual states: "In order to establish a Handicap Index, a player must join a licensed golf club and post adjusted scores." This isn't something I'm really interested in doing. I'm also not playing in tournaments, leagues, etc. For the time being, I just want to track progress (or lack thereof) and I like the course rating system as I think it's a good way to account for course difficulty.

1. Is the information on this site correct and is this the same as a handicap index?    http://www.wikihow.com/Calculate-Your-Golf-Handicap

2. Do I use "Equitable Stroke Control"?

3. I know the answer to this next question is probably yes, but does everyone adhere exactly to the USGA rules?

Oh, and I'm too cheap to join the Golf Association of Michigan.

Up another. 7. Deserving but I am happier with my swing. I am still trying to get used to the irons and get rid of my chronic flip/weight to right issues. I play different courses all the time so that does affect me as well. "7's" have been killing me. Early in the year I might have a 7 on the card once every two rounds, now at least once a nine. Poor driver control and lack of girs... causing me to bogey more and less pars.

Down another tenth, though I'm really not striking the ball very well right now.

Bad timing, the @MacDutch and his happy little band are coming into town next week.  We may be in for a repeat of the Ryder Cup thrashing....... :-O

    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
    • Hello, I've been playing a Teardrop td17 F.C. putter for many years and love it. It still putts and feels as good or  better than any of the new putters I've tried and it's in excellent condition except the face has dings in it ever since I bought it used that kind of bother me. I was just wondering if it's possible to have some really shallow horizontal grooves milled into the face on a "roll face" putter. I think I would rather spend some money on it instead of trying to get used to a new putter.  Thanks
    • I agree with @klineka & @DaveP043 above.  When a new member first joins the club they cold be told that they are not eligible for tournaments until they have an established HCP.  As you said, it only takes a few rounds.  If they do not to post HCP that was their choice and choices have consequences.  If playing in the tournament is important to them then they should step up and establish an HCP.  Maybe they miss the 1st tournament, is that a real big deal?  And if it is a "Big Deal" to them then they had the opportunity to establish the HCP. As for not knowing how to report for HCP I assume your club has a pro and they should be able to assist in getting the scores reported and I suspect out of state courses may also have staff that can assist if asked.
