Quick question. I use my scorecard.com which provides an official USGA handicap. It shows me at a 19.0 but also shows my trend handicap at 18.0. Anybody know what that means?

The trend is where your index would be if today were the end of the revision cycle. In other words, if you don't enter another round before the end of this month, that will be you index when it updates on the first. Edited to add that Dave beat me to it...

Thanks buddy. Since I would love to see my HC drop from 19 at least for one day, I have no intention of entering another score until it updates. :-D

Hey, if you play a round, post the round.  Don't get in the habit of manipulating your handicap, its a slippery slope.  The better plan is, if you're going to play today or tomorrow, go play really well!

Really just a joke buddy since I won't be able to play until Saturday lol. I put all my rounds in, fortunately I've been playing well lately.

Why does your American handicaps only get updated every couple weeks? Why not after each qualifying round?

GHIN updates once a month. as per the golf association you signed up with. For me it's on the 15th of each month.

A. USGA Handicap Indexes are revised no less often than once a month and no more often than once every two weeks during the playing season as determined by the authorized golf association..

As for why, I suspect it's to keep handicap's stable. If a really good players has a legit bad stretch of play, he still has time to even that out if he plays well the next few times. If you update a lot you could end up with a lot of crazy matches.

I really have no idea.  Not too long ago, it was updated only once a month, and I'd guess that was at a time when the handicap was calculated manually.  Instant updating is certainly possible with modern technology, but it could be rather inconvenient when setting up flighted tournaments.  I run my club's team in an interclub league, and we have a requirement that a player have a handicap of 5 or higher to be eligible.  I could see a time when I would have a team all set, and a player would become ineligible the day before the event after shooting a low score..

GHIN updates once a month. For me it's on the 15th of each month. It is determined by the golf association you signed up to.

@saevel25 you should see an update twice a month.  The following is from Rule 8.3 of the Handicap Manual:

A domestic golf club must follow the National Revision Schedule. Under the National Revision Schedule, each Handicap Index must be revised on the 1st and the 15th of each month.

For an international golf club , each Handicap Index must be revised no less often than once a month and no more often than once every two weeks during the active season in accordance with the revision schedule as established by the authorized golf association that has jurisdiction in its area.

Okay things are starting to head in the right direction finally drooped .8 from 7.5. I would really like to see myself in the 4.5 range again before the year is up just need to keep playing well that 1 under 35 on the front 9 led to a nice 77 and a 3.7 made a nice difference now I need about 5 more rounds in the 70's and I should be getting there.

Dropped to 19.5 from 19.6..... still struggling to consistently break 90.

Driving is better, but putting has deteriorated.

So I was shocked when I just found out my first official handicap. I have a 13.6. It's so weird because if someone told me they were a 13.6 handicap I would think he or she was pretty good. Yet I feel like a buffoon out on the golf course. Just judging by my lofty expectations of "single digit handicaps" I figured these people were worlds ahead of me. How strange a realization. Newsflash to new golfers: a 13.6 handicap is not as good as you think lol.

I went from 2.9 to 2.6..................then carded a 73 today so I'm already trending 2.2 towards the next revision :-) If I can get 1-2 more solid rounds in by the 15th, I will crack back into the 1's.

    • Best drive I've ever hit: I will not be answering any questions about the rest of the hole. Or the round, for that matter.
    • I tried hybrids way back when TaylorMade introduced the copper orange Firesole Rescue, the clubhead having been made of titanium which was still relatively new even in drivers back then. I couldn't hit it well at all, and while the success of hybrids suggests that the modern ones must be quite good,  I'm perfectly happy with the 5, 7, and 9-woods.  Early ones of mine were Top Flite Intimidator 400s made by Spalding... and also made of titanium, now that I think of it.  I still have them in my basement. I do bag a driving iron, but it's a one-trick-pony that never sees fairway use.
    • The last time I played Maxfli balls, Dunlop was still making them. How long ago was that? Mostly, though, I used to play Top Flites (original 336 dimple model) when Spalding was still making them. Now I play the Pro V1x. Last time that I ordered some, Titleist was still making them. Let's see how long that lasts.
    • Once, on a course in Middleton, Massachusetts that I used to love but has since closed down,  I hit the wrong half of a huge, UK style double green.  Then I made the hundred foot putt.  Tough to  forget that one.
