I read that two years ago. I'm sorry EJ, I love ya but that book was utter dreck. Meandering and without direction. I couldn't care less about a single character in that book, especially since not a single one of them was believable as a person.

Owen Meany and Cider House were great, but Twisted River was laughable.

I'm only about a quarter of the way in, so a little too early to say whether I find it meandering, but I like it so far. You didn't find Ketchum to be an interesting character?

Yours in earnest, Jason.

Do Pokemon books really qualify for this thread?

Nope. He came off as a caricature to me. Make sure you tag me when you finish, I'll be interested in your thoughts.

Strange coincidence with the John Irving guys on here - I'm reading "The World According to Garp" right now! Find it pretty interesting. about 1/3 through. I tried Hotel New Hampshire about 15 years back and never got through it. Just remembered it seemed over-the-top farcical for me.

Also reading Lowest Score Wins for something more important ;-)

Yup, your description of over-the-top is accurate. To me, Twisted River came across as just stupid.

Currently reading Sea Wolves, the story of British submarines in WWII. Gives an excellent insight into life on a Britsh sub in the Meditaranian campaign.

Good accounts of the exploits of a British hero, Lt Cmdr David Wanklyn VC, DSO, RN, skipoer of HMS Upholder who sank over 89,000 tonnes of shipping in 28 war patrols.

If military history is your thing then The Last Patrol is a good read. Has an account of the service history of all 52 US subs lost during the war.

Just finished Redeployment by Phil Kay. It is a book of short stories related to serving in Iraq and Afghanistan and coming home. Won the National 2014 National Book Award. It will make you angry, it will make you sad and it will make you laugh. A quick satisfying read.

Lowest Score Wins. Damned cover looks like a new Taylormade Driver it's so white. I had to wash my hands before I picked it up to prevent any risk of smudging. I havent really gotten past the complex relationships expressed in the cover art.

Leon Trotsky biography.

Cool choice. If you like biographies, have you ever read the Benny Morris Theodore Roosevelt trilogy? "The Rise of TR" is truly fascinating. I think Scorsese has actually signed on to make a biopic out of it.

I know this is from a few months ago, but... how dare you.

As for what I'm reading:

It was a little slow at first, but I'm about halfway through and super into it.

Whoooo that is heavy reading. Two of my favorite books, though.

I'm starting to get back into reading books more these days. I used to read two books a month but that has really tapered off in the last couple of years (I was wasting too much time on basketball forums).

I just finished "The Martian" by Andy Weir. It was a fun book.

Now I'm reading "American Sniper". It's interesting but not very well written - which is weird since it looks like there are two ghostwriters for it.
