In the winter, I'd like nothing more than a nice 40° day with a torrential downpour of rain. Clears snow and ice right up. Hopefully we get one soon, but it's looking like snow and more snow here in NY.

That would have been good, except we got a 32° day with torrential downpour, followed by a 25° day. Here are some pictures from today: The street is on the north side of the house, so this ice will be here for a while.

Yeah, like @billchao said and showed. Around here that's a guaranteed skating rink. Makes the snow seem down right friendly.

What's worse is I can't get my van out of its spot. Was going to go to the indoor simulator place, now I have to deal with that instead. Talk about depressing.

Fairly mild (32 degrees F) in my part of Virginia today, clear and dry. First trip to the range since before Christmas with no golf played in between. The ice-cold, rock-hard range balls felt like ball bearings off the face of my driver. Hit my irons nicely, all the way through to my 4 iron. The driver was a very different story.

I'd been playing around with this advice a bit last season, with some reasonable results:

http://www.golfdigest.com/golf-instruction/2012-02/sean-foley-down-driver

A few months off, and resuming on a cold day, the results were far, far from pretty. Very high, and spinning horribly left. God knows what was going on. Got back on to my more usual swing path with my driver after however many balls - nothing special, though - straight(ish) and no more than 200 yards of carry.

Much work to do in the Spring...

My long break is coming to an end. The extended period has been nice, but I've been fooling around too much anyway and looking forward to some sunshine.

Snow shoveling tips from The Onion

http://www.theonion.com/articles/snow-shoveling-tips,37929/

In the midst of heavy winter blizzards, digging yourself out of the drifts can be both an inconvenient chore and a dangerous task linked to fatigue and heart attacks. Here are some safety tips to keep in mind while shoveling snow:

Before heading outside to shovel, do your best to reverse the 40 years of poor health choices that have put you at high risk for getting a heart attack.

Taking a few minutes to stretch before shoveling is a great way to unnecessarily prolong an already unpleasant chore.

Bending from the back can damage your spine; always damage your knees instead.

Prevent snow from sticking to your shovel by coating both sides in a layer of butter.

Throw the snow over whichever shoulder you’d like; no need for superstition.

Pace yourself and take a five-minute break for every 500,000 snowflakes you shovel.

Be sure to wear a frostbite whistle at all times.

Stay hydrated by shoveling every third load of snow directly into your mouth.

As much as possible, try living in a condo building.

If all else fails, pay a real man to do it for you.

Local weekend weather forecast has gone from heavy snow to light snow to apparently now freezing rain. I think I'll try to convince my wife that I need to go to the TaylorMade product release event Saturday morning to try and get a free sleeve of balls. Like the weather, my plans may also change due to factors beyond my control.

It's supposed to be in the forties over the weekend but there is still considerable snow cover on the course. Even if it melts, it'll be a muddy mess, so I will probably pass.

Gonna start some indoor hitting with the pro next week. Light at the end of the wintry-mixed  tunnel.

Two or three inches of snow is still on the manor and a 34-degree high today isn't going to help much. But, Saturday is supposed to be 42 and Sunday is supposed to be 45. So ... there might be a chance. Or maybe I'm deluding myself.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
