Fair enough.  I just don't get that though.  If it was on live and I really wanted to watch it, I'd still think "well, it comes on at 9am and I'll be at work.  I could sneak a peek here and there, but I'd rather just watch the whole things straight through, so I'm going to set me DVR and watch it ... " wait for it " ... tonight!!!"

But just in general ... I have much less of a problem with NBC's production of the games than a lot of people, so I recognize that not everybody feels this way. :)

You'll get a laugh out of this Golfingdad.

I was hoping for some Russian tanks and missiles in the parade with Red Army troops escorting the athletes in.

OK, for all of the fails and cynicism piled on to Sochi, that was an amazing ending and I got goose bumps. And as a classical music lover, +1.

Don't these people have jobs????

Who cares if the ceremonies are shown on tape delay?  Are they worried that somebody is going to spoil it?

Here, I'll do it now:  There will be music and dancing and random stuff involving colors and kids, then all the athletes will walk in and we'll go "That's a country?  I've never heard of Ggsdffsdfdeuyrewisdfjksdistan before.  I'm rooting for that guy!"  and then "Man, those Swedish girls are hot!"

Then, wait for it ... somebody will light a big flame!!!  Oh my god, I had no idea!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  What a shocker!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe I'm just jaded because out here, pretty much everything is already taped delayed so we're used to it.  You guys all recognize this, right:  "Stayed tuned for 60 Minutes followed by your late local news immediately following the game .... exxxxxxcept on the west coast."

Is Vladimir Putin going to ride in on his horse without a shirt on?

No, that would be way too gay.

Having seen the BBC coverage of the opening ceremonies - live - and then NBC's, I noticed so many differences that I easily prefer the BBC's broadcast. It was almost an hour before it actually started showing the actually ceremonies. Commercials. OK, DVR it and skip through, it's tape delayed anyway. But there's more. US coverage omitted, skipped right past many parts of the ceremony. It's like selective censorship. I've tolerated the NBC commentary, but the BBC's commentary was more positive, more interesting facts, more silence when you wanted to hear the music or soak in the moment. Wish C-SPAN or PBS would cover it instead of NBC. Nothing But Commercials.

Irina Rodnina, the figure skater who lit the Olympic flame along with Vladimir Tretiak, and is currently a member of parliament for Putin's United Russia political party, sent out this doctored picture of Obama on Twitter last September. When called out about it, she deleted it from her Twitter account but was unapologetic and claimed her right of free speech, pretty ironic from somebody who represents the Russian Government.

Yowsers! I don't even know where to start on that one. Perfect blend of implied homoeroticism with a healthy dash of racial slur thrown in. Diplomacy at its best.

For some reason I always liked watching the Biathlon when I was a kid and always was disapointed that the U.S. wasn't ever good enough to win a medal in it (and usually not even come close). Still waiting...And still haven't ever figured out exactly why we are so totally outclassed in those events. Even with a small talent pool in that sport it seems like we should occasionally get lucky and get somebody with enough guts and skill to compete.

Wife and I just watched that. Quite fascinating and loving the enthusiasm of those announcers!

Anyone else think the Germans are subtly thumbing their noses at Putin's homophobia?

Not necessarily. The rainbow has religious connotations. Your probably right tho.

NBC's site makes it hard to find the live steaming. BBC and CBC much better designed. I keep getting the coverage will resume momentarily screen. One great thing about the live stream is announcers who don't love the sound of their voice. Matt. Meredith. Bob. Ugh.

So I watched the moguls event yesterday.  How do their knees survive doing that? @cipher , what kind of shock absorber could I get installed in my thighs to allow me to do that?

    • Day 251 - 2025-06-08 Got some swings in when a lesson showed up with a back injury. Why they didn't text last night… I don't know. 😛 So I had some time before the next lesson. I'm doing something a bit different now. I'm folding and rolling a little more while keeping the left wrist cup, and then doing a bit less on the downswing.
    • Day 39 (8 Jun 25) - Threatening t-storms cut short the time in the backyard yard - managed some work with the 7i and hard foam balls, again focused on staying in the setup-swing process.  Only hit about 20 balls - taking time to walk thru each swing before making it.  Reminded me of the commercial TItleist has out about “trusting the process” as the results will follow…seeing a bit of that happening in my drills (results that is).
    • The ball is LOST, so it's a pretty bad shot seeing as how the point of the game is to hit YOUR ball from the tee into the hole in as few strokes as possible. Replacing your ball because you can't find it is pretty bad. "We've always cheated and breached the rules, so why now that there is an official rule that supports and allows what we do should we adopt it" is certainly a stupid hill on which to choose death, but so be it. Push for them to adopt the local rule. After all, it's for a ball LOST or OB.
    • This question has probably been discussed previously but a search didn't reveal anything, so I'll pose it this way. Our league generally plays under the official Rules of Golf but there is a "relaxed" (I'll call it) adjustment made regarding balls that get lost in the rough. We obey all the official rules about balls in penalty areas and when hit Out of Bounds (the approved "Local Rule" - drop in the fairway with a two-stroke penalty). but when a ball is lost in the rough guys have historically just dropped a new ball in the general area of where the ball is thought to be with a one-stroke penalty. This, I know, isn't correct. It's either stroke & distance - (which we don't do because the group behind would throw a fit) or handled just like O.B., drop in the fairway with a two-stroke penalty.  When this was pointed out (by me) there was considerable push-back. Many said if a really lousy shot that happens to go into an area marked with red or yellow stakes or lines is one stroke and a ball in the water is one stroke, why should a bad but not so terrible shot in the rough, but just invisible because it's covered by grass clippings or embedded down in long grass, be two shots? When I pointed out, "Well...that's the rule" some other wag said, "Well the league has been doing it this way for 20 years, because we don't have forecaddies, marshals or TV cameras watching us." Other than this issue we're pretty much spot-on when it comes to the rules but I would really like to know about what other leagues do about this specific issue.
    • Its going to be a busy few months for me.  In just a couple of weeks I'll be joining the SandTrap group near Pittsburgh for 2 rounds.  Then in August we'll be in Nova Scotia for a week, including both Cabot courses.  And now we've added another little holiday.  Following my niece's wedding west of Detroit, my wife and I will go up to Forest Dunes for 3 rounds.  I picked that spot because I'm intrigued by The Loop, a Doak design that is played in different directions on alternating days.  One day is the Red, playing counter-clockwise, the next days is the black, going clockwise.  And there's the original course, a Weiskopf design.  All told, 10 new courses to add to my list!
