The positives and negatives of drinking while golfing, this round was for a friends' bday, we had a 30 person tourney.

The beer loosened me up obviously as I went from never hitting a 300 yard drive, to hitting 3 in 1 round!!! On the downside, it REALLY loosened me up. Look at all those penalties from even approach shots......

Normally when I shoot under 100 I feel ok. Not tonight.

5 lost balls - 2 with the driver, 2 with woods and 1 with an iron.

Fairway woods were terrible. Hooks, slices and duffs.

Driver was meh. Had a couple long drives - 246 and 248. But the fairways were pretty firm so they were decent drives but with more roll than normal. I've only been averaging like 210 so far this year.

Putting was uncharacteristically good. Had several 1 putts - a few from long range. At least that was fun.

The 17th pretty much summed up the round. It's a par 3 that plays about 150 from a elevated tee box. The tee shot requires you carry a marshy pond - which didn't happen when I skulled my 7i. Teed up another ball, hit a nice shot to within 12', then one putt for bogey. Seemed like I was always trying to recover from terrible shots.

Worked on flighting my wedges tonight with mixed results. That'll be a work in progress.

I don't know how to feel about these rounds in the mid-80's anymore.  I used to come home smiling and excited about scoring below 90.  Now I feel a little disappointed when I don't post something below 85.

Today's 43 - 43 = 86 had some positives (iron play, primarily) and some negatives (putting, as usual).  I missed a 6 footer for birdie on the 5th hole and then a 3 footer for birdie on the 12th hole.  I just wish I could figure out the putter.

Anyway... the link is below.

From this past Sunday: http://www.gamegolf.com/player/roamin/round/1566401

Shot a 93. Lots of solid bogeys early on, was hitting good tee shots until the turn. Highlights of the day were the birdie on #4 after a topped (or shanked?) 3-iron and the par on #10.

I was up 10-1 on skins after 10 holes (extra dot for the birdie ;-)), so up 9 with 8 to play...and then I proceeded to give it all back and watched my buddy chip in for birdie (and an extra dot) on #17 to finish at an even 10-10.

Shot 91 with 14 bogeys. Consistent, I guess.

Lots of great iron shots sprinkled throughout the round, but couldn't really get anything going, scoring-wise. Drives started working well on 11, and led to a nice birdie on 14. Other than that, nothing memorable.

Beautiful day on the course this morning. For some reason no one else out there until I was leaving.

Been a rough year so far. Didn't even break 100 from these short tees today.

Contact on full iron swings was probably the best in years, if not the best since I've been playing. Not a single mis-hit (contact wise) and good distance. Had a 4iron punch shot that wasn't great, but other than that, I was happy that what I'd been practicing at home showed up on the course.

As far as dispersion with irons... different story. Lots of nGIR's but very few GIR.

Short game/putting really, really, REALLY sucked @$$, as did the driver.

Still trying to figure out how to flight my wedges. I'm doing something wrong because I've yet to see any benefit. Might require some hands-on lessons.

First full round of golf in over 3 weeks.

I hit the ball pretty well. My short game was C+. My driver was pretty good. My irons were really good today. My putting was OK. I didn't really make any mid range or longish putts.

Walked 9 after work and shot 44. They started me on the back, which was a nice change.

Birdied the first hole with ease and walked to the 11th tee with a big smile on my face. Nice drive at 11 and on the green in regulation...but I promptly found out this is the wrong hole to miss long on when the pin is in the front. Four putted from the back of the green (off of a hill) for a double.

So-so from there. Driver was working well but I couldn't seem to capitalize. I either screwed up the second shot or screwed up a putt once I made it to the green. Missed a 3 footer for par after a spectacular bunker shot on 16, and then three-putted after a perfect 7-iron to the middle of the green on the par 3, 17th. Grrrr. :-)

37 on the back nine in league play last night.

Hit both par 5's in 2 for birdies. Bogied both par 3's with not so good tee shots and equally not so good chip shots.

Missed two 7 footers, one for par and one for birdie.

Played 17 holes this morning.  Decided to skip one where they were changing out the pin location.

I truthfully wanted to go back to the 1st tee and start over after I played that hole.  I just kind of chopped it around that one.  The rest of the round wasn't horrible, but it wasn't all that good either.

I had a tough chip on the 16th after missing long.  I'm still not sure how the ball ended up there.  Outside of that, the back side was pretty good.

I'll be playing another round tomorrow with my buddy who is my member - guest partner this weekend.  He's playing pretty well and I'm playing average so... I feel like if I can keep my swing together, we may have a pretty good shot at making some noise in our flight.

73 today. This is one of my favorite courses in our area.

Except they are about to change the greens from bent to bermuda. So we got to play on this...

Not as bad as it looks. They were slower than they appeared. Still disappointed though.

Windy and started to rain around 14. Ground was pretty firm so the course played well.

Tale of two nines. Front I felt completely lost: was unsure of my start lines and couldn't find the bottom of arc. Made a swing feel change and everything started to just click; even started hitting pitches and chips better. At least I shot well on the back so I went home feeling pretty good.

(I had to recreate 2 or 3 holes going from my scorecard and by memory.)

This is pretty much where my game seems to be right now. Ok contact with the full swing but an inability to start the ball on line left and right. Short game is still pretty poor. Missed far too many short putts as is usually the case. Had a few duffs with the woods and driver, but hit most of my irons cleanly.

My scoring average is up from last year - above 100 - due in part to playing from longer tees.

Was able to post this round towards my handicap.

Played 18 with @iacas yesterday at Oak Tree CC in Middlesex, PA.  I didn't record a legit score on at least 5 holes, so I deleted the round from GG.

I played OK.  Driving and short game were alright; irons and approach shots were pretty bad.  I struggled to make consistent solid contact; the rough was pretty long but I can't blame it all on that.  Putting was actually good, except for maybe 4 putts with awful distance control (one led to a three-putt from 4') and a couple mis-reads with Aimpoint.

My driving distance overall has definitely bumped up a bit with the new "stab" piece I'm working on, which leads to some solid scoring chances when I get it right and hit it straight:

Not a horrible night playing in league. Putting was pretty decent and driver wasn't bad except one hole. Need to work on better control on my short to mid-range approach shots, but I can't complain overall considering how early it is in the season and I haven't bothered to do any practicing or range work.

    • Of course. I've used different words to start, but like 90-95% of the time it's been this one. And I'm unlikely to switch now.
    • Welcome to TST @Camjr.   We're glad you've joined.
    • Angle is not a factor. I hit the ball 100’ high. Par is net birdie. My CH is 16. The rough between the bunkers is like 10’ wide though. That’s not something you’re going to try to hit on purpose. Most of the area to the left of that is fescue/native vegetation and I’m pretty sure there isn’t a flat lie in any of it. It’s the second hole.
    • Hello all.  I'm about to be 57 yrs old, started playing when I was 16, and have quit and restarted the game more times than I can count.  I had started playing a weekly round with a friend, and finally made the jump to Senior A shafted Tour Edge clubs.  Instantly gained 10 yds with an easier swing (why didn't I make that jump sooner???).  Glad to be a part of the group. Cheers all,
    • I think I like this hole.  It is a clear "Risk-Reward" choice.  Since most of the shots in your cone cleared the bunkers I would say they are a minor risk and not a big issue.  Playing the aggressive line may give you 70ish yards in from what looks to be playable rough while conservative play is 120ish from fairway.  I know you said 70 vs 120 is minor for you but how does the approach angle in impact your results?  I figure both strategies are playing for Birdie since holing out from either is mostly luck. Looking at your proximity hole I think it says @ 50 feet when hitting from the fairway from 100-150 and 40 feet if hitting 50-100 from the rough.  Neither of those is an easy birdie putt.   I like the approach angle from the rough between the bunkers & the adjacent tees over the angle from @ 120 in the fairway but I really do not like the idea of hitting onto the adjacent tee boxes and that may impact my confidence with making the shot.  Also, too far left may be a worse approach angle then from the fairway short of the bunkers. For me this may come down to how confident do I feel when I reach that tee box.  If I am stroking it well off the tee leading up to the hole I would try for over the bunkers and the better angle in but if I am struggling that day I would likely opt for the fairway to take more bad stuff out of play.
