This happened about ten minutes ago. World no.1 Stacy Lewis topped her 3-wood on the par-5 13th hole during the 3rd round of the Evian Championship. Lol. Golf is hard.

I appreciated your commentary and the funny little laugh. Golf is indeed hard. Delightfully, simply, addictively difficult.

Why do they call golf "golf"?  Because all the other four letter words were taken.

Swing looks flattish, very shallow 3 wood, looks as if too much upper body before lower body = top

Tempo can be an issue in the results.

Well the ball was above her feet a bit there. That sort of lie you are more concerned with chunking a ball. So I would say a slight thin is more common.

I agree, her swing is shallow. It almost looks like she dropped kicked the ball a bit there. Not sure, they never showed a face on view.

Oh well it happens, move on.

Good on noticing the lie ... I did not, and the lie above her feet helps explains the shallow swing. Wonder if she moved the ball a tad back or stood up to account for the lie ... but the shoulders look like they got into the swing a little too soon...

I did that at least 4X over 2 rounds this week ... know that move well. :-$

She definitely didn't "come over it". If you filmed Stacy hitting a solid 3 wood and compared it to this one, not going to see any differences.

Happens to the best of us.

Golf is hard.

I did it in the last SoCal outing from a perfect lie in the fairway. It happens, and can tend to happen more with a fairway wood.

I just assumed that's how it looked when you hit a 3 wood from the fairway...

Bah, mine are worse. Ball takes a "hovercraft" trajectory. At least her ball got some air. :-D

What I find more interesting is @JetFan1983 keeps a copy of @iacas 's Lowest Score Wins on the coffee table in the TV room for quick reference while watching golf.

That's the difference between tour pros and average joes. With pros can see it happen once a year With average joes see at least once per round or once every 3-4 rounds but definitely more than once a year

Wow, her swing plane looks really flat!  And her club looks really long in proportion to her height.  And her ball looks more like an oval than a circle...

But seriously, that Jason Day chunked drive is the best thing I've seen all day.

I seem to have this happen if the ball is too far forward in my stance.  It's like the club bottoms out and then clips the ball on the way up.

Or maybe my understanding of topping is wrong.  I always figured topping meant coming down too steep on the ball and sort of hammering it into the ground.

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
