The drill i'm referring to is the one that Paula Creamer is using in this video. She presets her arms/hands so that the club is parallel to both the ground and target line while maintaining her address posture and then completes the swing from that position after a short pause:

Billy Horschel and Rickie Fowler also rehearse that same position as part of their preshot routines on most shots

I've started using this both as a drill and as part of my preshot routine and it has helped me a lot with setting the club on plane.  However, it would be helpful if I knew what to call it because I've showed it to several of my friends and it's kinda awkward explaining a drill without having a name to call it :-P

Call it the "Pre-Set Drill."

I've been doing that in practice for 7 or 8 years. I thought I invented it. :-D

For me it's just a position I need to hit in my back swing and if I hit that position I hit the ball much better.

I've even thought of playing that way but didn't have the guts to take the ridicule.

I haven't done it in a while, but an old instructor had me doing it for a time. She said it was to help me "get the club in the slot." I tend to take my club too far inside at the takeaway, so it helps.

I don't have a name for it either.

I think it's called "Paula, bark like a dog for me". If that's not it, then I don't know.

Thinking about it more ... Wrist Cock Drill

My son had a TGM instructor who started him on the swing in this manner at every session.

Thanks for all the responses so quickly.  Since there doesn't seem to be a definitive name for it, I'm just going to call it the preset drill from now on because I used "preset" in my original post to describe the position used in it and "preset drill" just rolls off the tongue nicely

Would like to see more hip rotation while getting to that A2 position, :-D

Never mind guys, I found it.  Evidently it is actually called the pre-set drill, which makes sense

All it took was a simple google search of "golf preset drill" and I got this video as the third result: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kKHCGNT-hPw

While I pretty much stumbled upon and figured out this drill on my own from watching Fowler's and Horschel's preshot routines, what I've been doing is exactly what is described by Faldo in the video, as well as what Paula is doing in the video in the OP

Anyway, this is a great drill that I'd recommend to anyone.  It makes it nearly impossible to not be on plane, and thus it gives you the feeling of a good backswing so that you can replicate that feeling when you make normal swings.  Personally, I struggled with not getting enough forearm rotation in my backswing and as a result my clubhead would stay way too closed and that made it very hard to get any decent wrist set without bowing my wrists and getting above plane.  But with this drill, all you have to do is get your wrists set in the right position at address, and then simply rotate your body from there to make a perfect backswing.  Trying to actually hit balls while doing this drill may be difficult at first for some people, but once you get used to it, it starts feeling as natural as taking a normal swing

See Post 2. I must have caught the name over 5 years ago when my son was using it.

But it is good to use google search...

At the same time, unless you're teaching someone else, why get caught up in so much effort in labeling it?

Hope it works.

I do something different and call it a "pre-set drill."

I couldn't find a video of it, but Ryan Moore used to do a preset in actual tournaments for a little while because he was injured, 2011 was it? I found this Nick Faldo video which basically shows what Moore put in play, playing for the big bucks. The modified swing is all the way at the end. I kind of wish I recorded those Moore swings now and what the commentators said.

Oh, exsqueeze me. Sir Nick Faldo. :-)

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
