2016 Ryder Cup Discussion Thread

Newbie here.
Just wanted to see who else had applied for the random drawing and which ticket options they would go for if successful in the ballot?
Also, any idea the number of patrons allowed on the course each day?
I'm a Scot who lives in Indiana, so I'm looking forward to going since it is reasonably close.  See if Europe can keep this run going  ;)

• Oct. 13-15, 2015 – GROUP A SALE OPEN
• Oct. 20-22, 2015 – GROUP B SALE OPEN
• Oct. 27-29, 2015 – GROUP C SALE OPEN
• Nov.3-5, 2015 – GROUP D SALE OPEN
• Nov. 10-12, 2015 – GROUP E SALE OPEN
• Nov. 17-forward – REGISTRANTS ON THE WAITLIST WILL BE NOTIFIED IF ANY REMAINING TICKETS ARE AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE

TICKET TYPES AND PRICING
Tickets Available for purchase (with limits and pricing):
An additional 6.875% MN state sales tax will apply along with a $6 shipping fee and a $4 handling fee per order

Daily Practice Round Tickets
( MAXIMUM OF 4 PER DAY PER REGISTRANT* )
Ticket holders will be provided access to the grounds of the Ryder Cup for the specific practice day.

Tuesday = $30
Wednesday = $30
Thursday = $100 (includes opening ceremony)

Daily Match Round Tickets
( MAXIMUM OF 4 TOTAL PER REGISTRANT – CANNOT BE COMBINED WITH WEEKLY GROUNDS TICKETS OR WEEKLY INTERNATIONAL PAVILION TICKETS* )
Ticket holders will be provided access to the grounds of the Ryder Cup for the specific match day.

Friday = $130
Saturday = $130
Sunday = $130

Weekly Grounds Ticket Package
( MAXIMUM OF 2 PER REGISTRANT – CANNOT BE COMBINED WITH DAILY MATCH ROUND OR INTERNATIONAL PAVILION TICKETS* )
Consists of six separate individual daily tickets and allows access to the grounds for each day of the Ryder Cup (Tuesday-Sunday plus Monday following if play is delayed).

Weekly Grounds = $560

If I am lucky enough to be able to buy tickets, I may go for the Weekly package, keep the Friday & Sunday tickets and punt the others to get as much money back as possible.   The PGA confirmed that the tickets are transferable (unlike the ones for Gleneagles in 2014 which had the I.D. of the purchaser on 'em), so they will be easy to sell on.

The law of averages say it's the American's turn.

However,with Darren Clarke at the European helm and Mcdowell and Mcilroy playing,there's a good chance the Americans will get walloped on home soil again.

I just returned from 10 days in Ireland and I took a bit of good natured ribbing about our inability to return the cup to the USA. It's definetly time to bring the cup home! :-D

I registered for tickets. The course (Hazeltine) is like 10 mins from my house and I'll have the opportunity to play there this fall.

Unfortunately for me, I'm sure the whole effing world (slight exaggeration) is trying to get tickets, so even being 10 minutes away, I'm sure my chances are small.

I wouldn't be so sure on the demand.  I was successful in the Gleneagles ballot but didn't buy tickets since they were non-transferable.
What would we be talking per day?  40,000 on the course?  I think you have a good chance.

Do you think there will be any transportation from downtown hotels for the competition days?    Not sure what area to book a hotel in: Downtown, Bloomington, Eden Prairie, etc.   I don't plan on getting a car.

Absolutely their should be transportation, I mean that's what I assume anyway. If you want to stay in a relaxed "no hustle and bustle" suburb, go for Eden Prairie or Chanhassen. There's relatively no night life, just two quiet suburbs. Chanhassen has a great dinner theater if you wanted to do something fun at night. Plus you'll be close to the course. I advise against Bloomington, never been a fan. However the Mall of America may have transportation going to the course that weekend, and the new hotel they just built there is gorgeous. I assume that is what a lot of people will be doing.

Anybody that want's to share the Ryder Cup with some night life will have to stay in Minneapolis. Something like the Raddison Blu or Foshay Tower or anything downtown off of 7th St. would be the way to go.

So yeah to break it down.

Quiet easy weekend - Chanhassen (may have to check on transportation, course is close though)

Party weekend - Any nice hotel off of 7th st. Minneapolis

Fill up fast - I assume the Radisson Blu at the Mall of America will fill up fast, it's close to the airport and the Mall will give you plenty of things to do.

Basically, he argues that U.S. team's primary disadvantage overseas is due to the European team picking courses that are regularly played by their pros (and almost none by U.S. players). To him it comes down to familiarity / comfort with your surroundings. He argues this small advantage translates to the edge of a few shots / putts made that make the difference between two teams very close in skill. He thinks TPC Scottsdale would be a good example of a good course for the U.S. team. Courses like Whistling Straits, where top European players have a comparable amount of experience / success to the whole of the U.S. team would not be ideal venues.

Does he have a good point?

It doesn't matter how well organized the US is, they need to play better and make more putts.

Second this, the influence of the captains is completely overblown. It's still on the players to put up the scores.

I also think the captain influence is way overblown. There seems to be alot more commradery with the Europeans. Hopefully the Ryder Cup Task Force made the right moves for this years cup. I bet the Euros were laughing when they heard about the task force. Its pretty simple, the Americans need to play better.

The Ryder cup has always been a bucket list thing for me and I drew International Pavilion tickets this year.  Yay me. Expensive tickets I know but at least I will have real bathrooms, food and a place to hide from the weather. I can't find a map that shows where this pavilion is located.  Anybody seen one yet?

My buddy and I have never been to a Ryder cup. Any tips or advice?

Good news for you.  Congrats.  We didn't draw anything this time.  Too bad, it's really just a few miles from me.

(Next door to Hazeltine is the Chaska Town Course - it might be one of the nicest city owned golf course you could ever play.)

This, absolutely.  There's certainly drama on the European side (Faldo's year, maybe a bit this year with Clarke jumping ahead of a couple of other guys in the apparent pecking order) but it's nothing like the over-analyzing that takes place with every U.S. loss.  When Europe lost in 2008, they seemed to recover quickly and mostly just blame it all on Faldo, then moved on to win the next three Ryder Cups in a row.

Talent-wise, both teams are equal.  Mentality-wise, Europe has the huge advantage.  It seems that ever since the Ryder Cup became so overtly nationalistic (seemed to happen in the Kiawah Beach year), most U.S. players seemingly can't cope with that kind of pressure.  It doesn't help that the USA keeps losing, and thus it becomes even more of a mental block and an obstacle to be overcome.

If the captaincy is going to be such an issue, then what stands out to me is that Europe picks captains who are only relatively past their playing primes, and are still known and familiar to all of the players.  The U.S. team picks guys who may be "due" but are also from at least a generational decade removed from the players he's captaining.

I got a Tuesday practice round through the primesport website. Nice & cheap as far as I'm concerned, no lottery required (i was denied on the lottery)

One thing I know I'm not going to like about this Ryder Cup is the re-routing of holes. I had started to get excited about the 16th hole (a par-4 that juts into the lake) being set up as a drivable hole at a crucial time in the round...but then I read that it's not going to be the 16th hole at the Ryder Cup, but the 7th, because the PGA of America could fit more grandstands on the opposite side of the course. So much for drama.
