I don't know how u guys in the States are seeing The Open .. when we get from feed of a US event it's CONTINUALLY interrupted by the programming going to a table with commentators grabbing about the golf amongst themselves, chatting to old golfers, sponsors, Faldo, continually showing the status of the FEDEX list, plugging the Snoopy balloon sponser and going off with adverts where we then get the Leaderboard and now and again you see a bit of golf... Don't u guys get frustrated with it.? ??. The golf coverage we get over here is GOLF GOLF AND GOLF .. no darned commenters ... I sure prefer this way...

I really enjoy the coverage from this tournament. The lack of expert panels talking and interviewing people is a positive thing in my opinion.

What's the club Spieth teed off with there? Looked like a utility/ironhybrid with graphite shaft.

Terrible stat. A golfer could miss every green in regulation and get up and down for par 18 times and he would have 1.0 putts per hole.

Oh come on. Clearly that's not the case with DJ. He bombs it off the tee and has wedges into holes. I know you are explaining HOW that stat could be misleading. But your example doesn't fly in this case.

That stat tells you nothing about how good a putter he is. Strokes gained putting is the best putting statistic.

Nothing? Then why does it even exist?

Are you really saying that putts per hole tells you more about someone's putting than strokes gained?

Because there was no other way to do putting stats until about 2005.

A lot of these posters here don't pay much attention to the European tour - equate to the Web.com tour.....so they've never heard of several of these players including Willett.

That's not what I said at all. All I'm saying is that everyone knocks DJ for being a horrible putter of the golf ball. If you've watched any of his rounds of golf other than the final round at the U.S. Open you would see it's an unfair knock. Guy is rolling it very nicely this week so far. That's my point. And stats can be misleading, all of them can be, as saevel25 pointed out with his extreme example.

Don't care for the Norwegian commentator though. He keeps yapping on about how Schwartzel looks like he's dying of cold. It's 13 ºC and windy, let them stay warm.

No wonder that sweater was so damn ugly. It's ancient. I understand sentimentalism but yuck.

Kill slow play. Allow walking. Reduce ineffective golf instruction. Use environmentally friendly course maintenance.

Well, you've watched him when he's playing better. And with a guy like him, he'll shoot lower scores when he putts better. So you're basically taking above average rounds for him (which only happen when he putts well) and saying he's a good putter when the stats don't bear that out.

That's absurd.

The only thing I can think of that might be more perplexing than that would be if there were, say, any posters here who didn't even play golf.

Fair enough, he's an average putter. Certainly not a horrible putter.

These guys are going to have a rough last 6 or 7 holes here. You've got that brutal storm coming in, you're going to get very little sleep tonight...winds supposed to tropical storm force in the morning. The wind is what killed Tiger Woods' grand slam chances...it may be killing Jordan's as well.

    • A 5400 yd course is not that short for gents driving it 160 yards considering the approach shot lengths they are going to be faced with on Par 4s.  Also, for the course you are referring to I estimate the Par 4s have to average longer than 260 yds, because the Par 5s are 800 yds or so, and if there are four Par 3s averaging 130 the total is 1320 yds.  This leaves 4080 yds remaining for 12 Par 4s.  That is an average of 340 per hole. Anyway, if there are super seniors driving it only 160ish and breaking 80 consistently, they must be elite/exceptional in other aspects of their games.  I play a lot of golf with 65-75 yr old seniors on a 5400 yd course.  They all drive it 180-200 or so, but many are slicers and poor iron players.  None can break 80. I am 66 and drive it 200 yds.  My average score is 76.  On that course my average approach shot on Par 4s is 125 yds.  The ten Par 4s average 313 yds.  By that comparison the 160 yd driver of the ball would have 165 left when attempting GIR on those holes.
    • I don't think you can snag lpga.golf without the actual LPGA having a reasonable claim to it. You can find a ton of articles of things like this, but basically: 5 Domain Name Battles of the Early Web At the dawn of the world wide web, early adopters were scooping up domain names like crazy. Which led to quite a few battles over everything from MTV.com You could buy it, though, and hope the LPGA will give you a thousand bucks for it, or tickets to an event, or something like that. It'd certainly be cheaper than suing you to get it back, even though they'd likely win. As for whether women and golfers can learn that ".golf" is a valid domain, I think that's up to you knowing your audience. My daughter has natalie.golf and I have erik.golf.
    • That's a great spring/summer of trips! I'll be in Pinehurst in March, playing Pinehurst No. 2, No. 10, Tobacco Road, and The Cradle.
    • April 2025 - Pinehurst, playing Mid Pines and Southern Pines + 3 other courses. Probably Talamore, Mid-South, and one other.  July 2025 - Bandon Dunes, just me and my dad.
