What'd You Shoot Today?

Recommended Posts

Today, 77, 40, and 42.  The 40 got paired with a 46 from yesterday to make an 86 which continues the trend of shooting an 86 immediately after I break 80.  I've broke 80 5 times this year and I think I've followed them up with an 86 4 times.  Also played in a little money game (two person scramble) with some of the guys from my league.  My teammate and I shot 6 under on the back to win $5 and then doubled down on 3 holes on the front for another $10.  The few holes on the front was decided on a closest to the pin on a par 3 playoff after ending the 3 holes even.  I'm glad to say I stuck it within 6 feet to wrap that up.

Saturday - Match play championship of my club with handicap (i'm 1 at the moment). Semifinal. Shoot 1 over to win 3/2 against a 7 handicap. Close match but never been down. Good ball striking but poor putting.

Sunday - Final - Shoot 1 over to win 2/1 agains a 12 handicap. Really hard game, was 3 down at 3.. Birdied 2 holes to be all square at 6. But again on 10th i was again 3 down on the match besides i was shooting even par for my round. A 12 handicap shooting 3+ over 10 holes its pretty hard to beat. Just think about keep making par and spect that the handicap and nerves starts to afect the other player. Hopfully thats whats happened. He shoot bogey or worse in every single hole till the end on 17th.

Lesson to learn, never give up !! We are all humans and can make mistakes so as our competitor.

Shot an 85 at a course out in East Texas near where I grew up, Pine Dunes Reaort - Frankston. I love playing courses like this that are cut into the natural landscape. And the sandy soil is a lot easier on your clubs than the Dallas black clay. But the best part on a very wet and rainy day, was getting to see the wildlife. The White Tails were all over the course as I finished my round. And then to find out about the passing of Mr Palmer, I'm glad I didn't give up on finding a place to play today.

3 rounds this weekend.  Including 2 on Sunday with courses I've never played before both gems.  The second a last minute Hot Deal I walked in on.

Driving - I've been on fire.  From Hole 16 last week through the first round on Saturday Plus 3 'bonus' holes on Friday (replayed a par 3 because it was slow and then went and played 10 and 11 again before the rain came in). I hit 31 Fairways  (including pars 3 I count if on the green or very near....this is just so I can keep count in a lazy way).  So unusual.  Friday's game is the very first time I've hit 18 of 18.  I think it payed off big.  by the 2nd half of the first round on Sunday, I started missing left a lot - clearly getting tired or unfocused.  You can see the FH hit stats just drop over the rounds (Gopher Hills I played back 9 first).

And I found about 5 dozen golf balls scrounging around.

This weekend was my 'zone' play, empty course, fast play and still able to go into the woods and scrounge.  Both Sunday games I came away with most of the balls, and still played both rounds in under 3 hours.  Fall play is great.

I had the good fortune to play Erin Hills this Saturday. It's a fantastic course and will make a great US Open venue next year. Long, challenging and fair, with tough greens and a diversity of shots required, I was thrilled to check it off my bucket list.

Even better was the fact that I had one of my best 2-3 ball striking days in..... Probably ever. Those who have played with me know I am good for a couple wayward drives each round. But I didn't miss a single drive on Saturday, giving myself tons of good looks for birdie. I only lost one ball, when I played it safe on hole 4 and snapped a 5 iron into the hazard.

The back was like a dream come true with 6 GIR's and a chip in for birdie on one of the few greens I missed (hole 13).

I finished with a 43-35.  Granted it was from the white tees, but a 1 under on the back is a dream round by any definition.

Shot 76 - 36 40

Played with someone who is a solid 4 handicap and I think it really helped my game.  Watching someone who regularly plays at a higher level makes it really clear where my game is lacking.

85 on a decent course 69.8/121. 44 front with a triple and 41 back. I even had an eagle on the 11th unfortunately followed that up immediately with a double bogey. Putting wasn't too bad, 30 putts is a bit higher than how I've been averaging but most of the misses were very near misses so I wasn't too bothered by it. Overall not a bad round really.

Shot 93 at  Pinewood in Slidell...bad #18, shot a 9--Hooked tee shot OB then hooked shot # 3 OB...#7 in sand trap and 2 putted...shows how one really bad hole can blow up your score...

Shot a 39 (par 36) on the course closest to my house (but not my home course). 6155 yards. It was my best round by 2 strokes (on 9 holes, which is even a bigger deal). Funny thing was I had to play this 9 holes in 1 hour 10 minutes flat or they were going to kick me off the course. I walked, and basically jogged between shots lol. But, I was able to get 3 birdies on this 9 holes even when out of breath for some shots lol. My fastest and best round. Weird combo. Truth be told there was some luck involved. I hit an tree and it kicked in the fairway (albeit backwards) on one hole. Conditions were fantastic though. Greens finally came in after being aerated about 3 weeks ago.

I played bright and early the next day with 2 strangers who were very nice, but the fog was super thick and conditions were wet. I was still anxious to play again....... pretty sure I shot over 100. No lie. Okay maybe I'm exaggerating but I do think it was in the mid 90's. I stopped keeping score. Was hoping I could claim the "broke 80" achievement but I blew donkey chunks on that "2nd nine." I was way off my normal game. Fortunately I was able to correct it quickly at the range this morning. I think it was just fatigue.

Running hot and cold this weekend.  Better scores both rounds than they felt....by a lot.  Just couldn't gett off the tee clean on Sunday.  Friday was better, but lots of discomfort with my swing.  I'm ready for some re-coaching.

Friday - short course, but it really played long (Three par 3's of 200 or more?  a 460 yard par 4?  seriously?  and then the 5's were short of short...wierd),

The upside on Sunday was it wasn't crowded behind and was in front of me - and it's a very penal course.  I had a ton of time to just poke around while waiting for greens to clear.  I found over 150 golf balls - nearly 100 of the premiums cleaned up to 'like new' condition.  (There were a couple really nice shots that might be an upside too I guess)

2 rounds this weekend at my home course.

76 (4+) : good ball striking. 13 GIR, but really bad putting. Really nice to hit 3 drive´s over 300 yards (Obviusly width the wind and on hard fairways.

77 (5+): started the round with rain, but stopped by the 4th hole. Another good driving day, but irons fail to me and again putter didn´t help either.

My handicap go´s up again to 2.. Some day i´ll be scrath. Missed my chance to get there a couple of times i´ve been in 1 this year.

Played pretty well yesterday. My only downfall was my putting which was upsetting.

Many performance has been shaken since I've been playing less since the wife works more now. I went from mid to low 80s with a few high 70s mixed in to shooting mid to high 80s or low low 90s.

I got out for 9 yesterday and worked on hitting low trajectory, controlled irons shots and I hit 5/9 greens which is an improvement for me. My misses were either small pushes right or one that just trickled off and I was in the fringe. I drove the ball well as well hitting 5/7 fairways. My chipping was decent but could use work.

Overall I'm happy with the performance

83 on a regulation course!!! Smoked my personal best by 5 shots and had a witness!!! Drove the ball better than ever and made just about every putt I looked at!!! I think Mr. Palmer may have helped me out on #10 as I miraculously skipped my 2nd shot off the pond and into middle of fairway and later chipped it in for birdie!

Had a reality check today after two sub 90 rounds last week, shot a 99.  I struggled with all my clubs today so I can't blame the weather or course conditions but I'm sure they didn't help.

My driver was inconsistent (44% fairways) and most of my missed fairways were into the tree where I had no way to advance the ball.   The speed of the greens were also really inconsistent, some ran fast and others were slow which resulted in 41 putts.

One of those rounds that go so wrong you can't help but laugh.

took the afternoon off to purge the sprinklers and got done in time to get twilight rates at a local course I haven't played in about 4 years.  Nicer than I remember

mediocre round, mediocre course.  1-5, then 8, then 10-18, then 6-9, then 1 again.  20 holes on a work day, not bad.  Started out driving fantastically.  and I had birdie chance on the hardest par 5 which is cool.

not quite hitting approaches on line though and putting was not comfy.  Again, once winter hits and I'm in the golf dome range, I think the video is coming out for some refresher work.

    • Yes, this is the 2024 model. DSG ruined what Callaway perfected for most golfers. A darn good 3 piece golf ball. Now it's a 2 piece cheap ball. To me a 2 piece ball is fine and a 3 piece budget ball is better. I prefer a slightly harder ball, something in the 65-75 compression range that will perform similar to the old Gamer. The Titleist tru-feel is pretty good. I planned on giving Maxfli straightfli a try.
    • Is that the current generation Gamer? Another old standby for a firm and inexpensive ball is Pinnacle.  There are two models, the Rush and the Soft, but I don’t know what compression they are.
    • Good advice, but according to DSG website it is a 45 compression ball. My current ball is the Top-flite Gamer at 70. 45 is too low for me to go.
    • The 3 piece Maxfli Trifli is 2 dozen for $35.  The Trifli does not feel as soft as the Maxfli Softfli, which is why I like it. Other options would be one of the Srixons, which have a buy 2 get 1 free offer.
    • I have been carrying a 7 wood more often this year.  It’s especially handy if you have a downhill lie to an uphill green.  It’s also handy if the rough on the course is deep.
