What'd You Shoot Today?

Recommended Posts

Shot something around 84-86 today (watch says 85). Wasn't really keeping score independent of shot tracking, and was more focused on how well I was hitting the ball, and less so on scoring, so not sure if there were any miscounted strokes. Based on today's round, I definitely need to do a bit more short game and putting practice along with continuing work on priority piece.

Ended up shooting 90 at Glenross Golf Club. 68.9/122, 6122 yards. Man, a tale of two 9's. My tempo was horrific on the front as I just felt rushed every single shot for whatever reason. Ended up with a 50 on the front.

Chilled at the turn with a 3 deep tee box on 10. Which was a blessing in disguise as I birdied the par 4 10th. I ended up shooting 40 even on the back.

Hit 56% fairways and only 28% GIR, but that was probably nearer 52/54% counting NGIR. Overall, I was pleased with how I hit driver and my misses were just right of the fairway by 3-5 yards. My putting was a glaring weakness today. I certainly read too much into the greens where I thought there was break and the ball didn't move.

Really enjoyed the round here and will be back for sure. The layout of the course is beautiful and the fairways and greens were in great shape, save one par 3 that was full of pitch marks.

Thursday, April 15 - Sugar Hill Golf Club

This week, we played the back nine for my Spark Golf league match.  I shot 49, but I hit some amazing shots, and for the most part, struck the ball pretty well.  It's still my driver and short game that are killing my score, so except for the first hole, the 14th which has a fairway that ends a little over 200 yards from the tee, and par threes, I hit 3 wood off the tee.  Save for one hole, I hit every fairway.

We started on #11, and I blew my drive into the trees on the right hand side of the hole.  I punched out into the fairway about 40 yards short of the green, but I hit a poor pitch and was still on the front fringe.  Our second hole was a par three of about 120 yards over water.  There is a narrow bank just short of a retaining wall that is about ten feet tall, and on top of that is a big, crescent shaped bunker that fronts the entire green.  I hit the bank, but my ball stayed dry.  I hit a flop shot straight up into the air into the bunker, and then hit a solid bunker shot out of a fried egg and made the putt.  I almost got on the green in two on the following par five with a pair of nuked three woods, but managed to make a six by making a hash out of my short game again.  I did pretty much the same thing on every hole where I had to rely on my short game - save for the 15th hole where I hit a gorgeous lob from about 30 yards to a foot.

I did manage a par on the par five 18th after chipping to about a foot from behind the green.  I went three wood, three wood, wedge to the back of the green, and every shot was well struck.

Played 18 holes from the yellows (6210 yards, par 72, rating 72,7, slope 147) and was all over the place.

Shot 92 and had some excellent stretches of holes and some really bad ones. On holes 9 to 14 i made 5 pars and 1 double, only hitting 2 fairways, 1 green and only using 8 putts on that 6 hole stretch. It was looking like a good mid 80s round till after hole 15. +8 on the last 3 holes of the day is just a very, very sad way to end a round.

Shot of the day was my tee shot on hole 4, a 192 yard par 3. With a slight breeze in the back I hit a 7i to 8 feet past the hole. It landed a foot past the hole and it looked so good I stopped breathing while the ball was in the air. Missed the birdieputt, but still a great hole.

4/13 fairways, 2/18 greens! and 30! putts. A strange round of golf.

In the bag: Callaway Mavrik SZ 10,5 driver (X stiff), Cobra King 4 wood (Stiff, 2006 model), Callaway Mavrik irons 4 - P+A (stiff), Cobra King Pur wedges 52, 56 and 60 (stiff) and Odessey white steel putter.  Very happy with the set and the gapping.

I suck, but I won $30 off my buddies so successful day I guess. I struck the ball really well all day but I had trouble finding fairways (5/14 just 1/7 on the front) this led to a ton of tree trouble that I didn't do a good job of managing. Had 10 GIR but only 2 birdies should have had more I had probably 6 looks under 8' and a few more under 15' but had some yippy strokes and didn't make much of anything all day. I was 0/7! on par saving putts my short game was pretty awful.

I shot 86 yesterday at El Rio in Tucson.  Best I've had since things went south last fall.  46/40, five pars on the back, so that was fun.  Three three putts, which was unusual, and maddening.  Also three fairway bunkers, and four greenside.  Got out of all of them in one, which is an improvement.  Starting to get better at that, hit a couple too long, but not the skulled, look out type.  Some really good chipping and pitching, so only 32 putts even with the three putts.  Summer league starts Thursday, maybe I am ready!

Oh, on the side, there was a group of three coyotes on the fifth hole.  One of them had a very badly damaged hind leg, I don't think it's going to last long.  Another seemed to be staring me down as I was going to hit out of a bunker.  Was a bit freaky.  Then I say a ground squirrel peek its head out of a hole six feet in front of the coyote, and realized he was not watchin me!  He stared a bit longer, snuck up on the hole, took a peek inside, and moved along.  As we were putting on the seven all three of them went into full coyote howl, which I am much more used to hearing at night.  I couldn't see what had them worked up, but it was an experience!

107 (61 front / 46 back).  A Jekyll/Hyde kind of day. Hole 1 tee shot, hard pull left into the azaleas bordering the hole.  From there it went into topped shots, fat irons, poor putting.  Then about hole 13 the swing came around and I finished with bogie average on 13-18.  Nearly all the other holes were double or worse.
The best part of the round, soon to be 5 yr old grandson was killing the ball on all fronts.  His dad wasn’t doing too bad either as he was breaking in his new Cobra driver and putting pretty good.

I have been playing, but I haven't posted since the 12th, with a 75. I'm not sure where the game is going, or where it's gone. Recent scores from last week were 84, 86, 79, 82, and 80.

I'm starting to think that I'm just playing too much golf. I'm getting that mental attitude that the score doesn't matter. If it's bad today, hopefully, it will be better tomorrow.

Well, it's pretty much been raining over these last two days, and it may rain tomorrow, so I'll be able to take a break and see what happens.

Shot 74 in an Elite Am Tour event last Saturday.  3 birdies, 5 bogeys. Took Low Gross and one skin in the Champions Flight (50+)

15/18 Gir, 11/14 Fw, 36 putts.

Drove it very well. Irons were okay. 3 three putts all from longer distances up some severe slopes. Still missed too many putts inside of 10 feet.

I was going to play Croasdaile yesterday, but I couldn’t play until around 4:00 and there weren’t any tee times. So I went to my home course, knowing I’d feel better if I played at all. I was going to play the blues at Croasdaile to get used to playing a longer course for Regionals, so I played the blues at Umstead, which are around 6400. I shot 46 on the front after starting double-double, so I wasn’t really disappointed at all.

Then I started bogey-par-par on the back and had a three-footer to save bogey on 13. Barely tapped it because that particular green is lightning fast, and watched it miss on the low side and slide six feet past the hole. I missed that one too, and tapped in for a seven. Not a big deal, but then came The Rot. Par for the next four holes was 17, I played em in 26. Then I parred the tough 18th for a 50 on the back and a 96 total.

Not awful, but given where I stood after twelve holes it’s not that good either. Really I only had one bad hole, a nine on the 15th, but it was still disappointing. Good news: we’re doing a scramble in practice today for kind of a fun day, so I’ll post back here tonight about that!

Played yesterday, and after the first nine, I said, yep, I am going to give up this game for a while. First nine; bogey, par, double, double, bogey, bogey, double, par, bogey, adding up to a 46. I felt like walking off the course. But I continued on. Back nine; bogey, par, bogey, par, par, par, par, par, par, for a 38. This game is so frustrating. So an 84 for yesterday. Just got off the course today. A 40 on the front 43 on the back, for an 83.

We did a 9-hole scramble mini-tournament for a kinda laid-back practice yesterday. It was the three coaches and one of their sons on a team, and the eight of us were divided into two teams of four and we took carts. The coaches played the white tees, we played the blues, and the two ladies on the team played the reds. We all got one “tee buster” (men used the red tees, ladies from the 200-yard marker.

We all had a blast, and there was a lot of trash talk which I enjoyed. We were off to a slow start, making par on the first three holes. Courtesy of my approach, we had a makeable birdie putt on the second hole (about 12ft), but none of us could convert. Then I used my tee buster on the fourth hole, but I didn’t take advantage. We still made birdie to get into red figures, then we made birdie on the tough fifth after the coach’s daughter (on our team) used her tee buster to get within 100 yards and I hit a beautiful sand wedge to two feet.

We also birdied the sixth hole, but made par on the seventh. We were three under at this point, and figured we needed to go birdie-eagle (two threes) to have a chance. We made our three on the eighth hole after the last guy to putt made a twelve-footer to avoid using one of our mulligans. We were in good shape on the last hole, because we still had a tee buster and three mulligans. We took full advantage, and we set up a three-footer for eagle, but it was slippery. We all missed it the first time, and then I used my mulligan to roll it in.

We finished six under (30) and found out the coaches finished seven under (29). The team behind us also finished at seven under, but we went to the tenth hole for a “playoff”. Both teams made par on the short par 5. So we agreed that my brother and I would have a puttoff.

We both two putted the first three holes, then I said, “Screw it.” and I plopped my ball about four feet from the hole, intending to drill mine to put pressure on my brother. I made, he missed.

Just a fun day of golf!

Another crazy day today. Started with a 42 on the front. 6 bogeys, 3 pars. The back was totally different. 1 bogey, 2 birdies, and 6 pars for a 35. I'll take that 77 any day.

A so-so kind of day for me as I shot 101.  It was a relaxing round but never seemed to get in the groove.  Had 39 putts and given the greens of the course we played that was pretty good.  Have a lot to do in the approach game - as it was totally inconsistent all day.  Some holes nGIR or GIR, others not so good.  Still any day is a good day when on the course.

Shot my first "Non-Practice" round of the year today.  It had some issues but overall I am pleased.  Shot a 102 but GHIN Adjusted #13 from Quadruple to Triple bogey so per GHIN round was 101.  I started out rough with Double-Double-Triple-Quadruple bogies on first 4 holes to be +11....AFTER JUST 4 HOLES!  That was very concerning, but then shot the next 5 holes in +1 for a 48 on the front nine.  Back 9 was rougher with a 54 (adjusted to 53).  Despite the overall score, there were a lot of positives.  First, I had only 33 putts for the round.  3-Putted only once and had 4 One-Putt holes.  THANK YOU AimPoint!!!  I had 2 GIR and 2 nGIR all of which led to Pars.  (I will be posting a question on nGIR in the LSW thread)  Overall my non-tee shots were mostly good and saved me after a few bad drives. I even got out of a fairway bunker after my 2nd shot for a GIR on a Par 5.  My problem was the driver. I hit only 1 fairway (I am being generous, the ball was 3 inches off the edge of the fairway) and I took 3 Stroke & Distance Penalties (all on the back 9) and had 1 other drop due to a bad tee shot.  Those penalties killed my round.

One thing I noticed, they had a "Gold/White" tee combination which is what we played.  The card shows it as 69.9/132 and 6096 yards while GHIN shows it as 70.4/132 and 6227 yards.  I do not recall them having any "Combination Tees" in the past so not sure if they re-rated or not when adding them.  The difference is not much so I doubt it will be much impact on GHIN HC but I am curious which is correct.  I might call the pro-shop and inquire.

I’m so close. Driving the ball well. Didn’t 3 putt any and felt like every first putt was in the hole. Didn’t make any but man I’m rolling the ball well. My issue is hitting greens. I missed 4 with a wedge of some sort in my hand. Wind was howling so I’ll give myself a pass on 2 of them. I hit shots that I thought were all over the pin and the wind picked up when ball was in the air and impacted the shot. Once I dial in my approaches I should be good to go. I only hit 7 greens. Add those wedge misses and I’m at 11. I can easily be at 10-14 a round before long. Ended up shooting 80 yesterday. Felt like I played worse with all those misses.

103 today (50 front / 53 back)....started with par and it went south from there. Only two more pars in the round.  Big plus was in the striking of the irons.  Big minus was the metal woods.  Greens on this course are tough - not undulations or slippery slopes but the greens themselves are lumpy bumpy that will play havoc with putts.  So I play this course with the mindset that bogie is like making par.

Shot 87 (ESC 86) today. Had 13 GIR/nGIR, 30 putts, and 5 very costly penalty strokes. Started off with a great drive, nGIR on the front left fringe, chip to a foot, and tap-in par on the first hole, which one of the more difficult holes on the course.

Then proceeded to go triple, triple on the next two holes (+4 penalty strokes for lost tee ball on each hole) to kind of deflate the good start. Had another penalty stroke when my ball rolled into a red staked area into a dry creek bed on the par-3 7th hole, but was able to get up and down for a 4 from where I dropped. Added another triple on the 18th for good measure after hitting my approach long and left into some knee high grass and taking four shots to reach the green.

It was a decent, low-event round, outside of the three triple bogeys. Short game, putting, and approach shots inside 175 yards were fine. Struggling off the tee with driver though, which is always the last thing to come around when working on a new priority piece for some reason.
