49 + 50 = 99

home course Mapocho (slope 113, rating 72.3 and 7000 yards)

long day. 3/13 FW, 3/18 GIRs and 39 putts

Started striking ball well and slowly could not find Fairway off tee and progressive deterioration with shanks undermining even short shots. Discouraging

My first five rounds of the year: 86, 87,87, 86, 86.

Okay, getting weird now. Since then: 87, 86, 86.

But I am more excited than I've been in years. I've rediscovered some of my "old swing" feel and I feel I'm not far away. I will get back to single digits this year. I'm confident.

Had the opportunity to participate in Merion's 2-day member guest. One round on the east and the second on the west. Shot 80 on the east..ball in the hole and 81 on the west ball in the hole. Then ran to my home course to qualify for the club championship. Shot 77. Over 2 days played 55 holes (Playoff hole as a flight winner). A special weekend and a lot of golf!!!!

39/40 = 79.  Bogies on the last 4 holes, all the result of missed putts under 6'.

I really felt better about the round than the last 4 holes and subsequent score would suggest.

As an added benefit, the first 4 holes (2 par-4's, a par-3, and a par-5) at the club form a nice little loop that circles back around to the parking lot.  It makes for a great playoff or emergency final press to the game.  We played that after our match, and I played it in one-under.  I won $40 for my efforts.  A BIG win in our group... :-)

Played in the Hangman Valley Amateur over the weekend.  Hot (for here) on Saturday and cool with intermittent rain on Sunday.  Shot 87-85 to finish T-7 gross and T-9 Net in the Second Flight.  I feel like I'm hitting the ball great but continue to have problems around the green.  Stats for the weekend:

FIR:  17/28 (60%), GIR 14/36 (39%).  Putts 65 (1.8 per hole).

My Achilles continues to be shots around the green... I had a total of 14 chips and pitches around the green on Sunday with a 3 chip that led to a triple bogey.  On Saturday, I had bunkeritis and had 7 bunker shots.

Highlights:  Birdied the first hole on both days, Saturday birdied the first and third holes to start -2 after 3 holes... on the way to an 87.  But I did win 3 skins and made some money!

Shot a 92 on Saturday. It was a par 70, 5300 yard course with a rating of 64.7 but I'll take it. First time breaking 100. Ball striking was all over the place and is my number one priority right now. My pitches were on point after learning Pelz's finesse swing, however.

Today was surreal......

My game hasn't been good...mostly flirting around 80 with a couple "outlier" low 70 rounds mixed in.   Today was my only chance to play golf in the next 7 days because my son has weekend bowling obligations.   The temp was around 91-93.............and steamy because we had rain over the weekend......the course was jam packed, and play was slow.  I got paired with a brand-new beginner.......and a "non-golfer".  the non golfer never hit a shot in the air longer than 50 yards for the entire 9.  Every stroke was a DUFF.......They were both extremely self conscious....I get that, but it was still uncomfortable because he duffed every GD-shot!!.......and I said everything I could to put their nerves at rest.  I could tell they were uncomfortable with me joining them.  At one point, I said something to the effect.....Hey..the course is jam packed...I OR nobody cares how many strokes you need....let's have fun!  So long as week keep pace with the group in front of us, the people behind us are good.  We kept pace amazingly enough.......it was still a weird round because I played exceptionally well.

We played the back9.... (36.0CR and 133 slope).....I carded a 2 under par 34 among this cluster..........   my best 9 hole score of 2017...LOL   WEIRD!!  I acted like this is how I play all the time and played it like MR COOL......they were in shock and never had seen a golf display like I put on today.LOL

I quit at 9 holes...it was hot, play was slow, and I had things I needed to do.  I would have liked to finish, but it seemed like a good time to end on a good note.  I made 3 birdies and a bogey.... I never flirted with a 2nd bogey.    of the three birdies...one was a 117yd wedge....6" tap in.    the other two were on par 5's..........both sand saves/short sided from bad positions.  I took my medicine...hit good bunker shots.....and holed a couple of 15' putts....   weird day.

As I read through these posts, I see people say what they did great and what they did poorly. Golfers take for granted the good things and focus energy on the what did not go well. I would like to suggest that we all appreciate the good things like, a great drive on the 4th hole, an awesome 2 putt from 45 feet or stiffing a wedge from 85 yards.

Continue to report the score but only include the positive events. I bet a mind set change will lower scores faster than a 30 minute session on the range!

I am trying it today and will report back to the group.

Shot an 87 yesterday, and it felt like I played well. But again, 3 off the tee FOUR times. One was literally driven too far. A 25' wide river runs through the fairway and into the ocean (its an Oceanside course)at 280 yards out. bI never expected to hit my best drive of the day 270 yards, let alone watch it roll into a fast moving river (we had a lot of rain this spring, so rivers are really high). One was off into the woods. One sliced into the ocean, and the other landed nowhere near water, but was hard into the left edge of the woods, so I took a provisional, and of course we could not find my ball. Thats 8 strokes I should not have needed to play (or give up in penalties).

Other than that, my course management is good. I did birdie the first hole, a dogleg right par 5, and then drained a 25 footer for birdie on the 18th. So I started and finished well.  In truth, aside from the 3 off the tee's, I only blew up one hole. A 175 yard par 3 that I caught fat, then a wedge that landed on the fringe as far away from the hole as possible. Chipped towards the flag, landed on the downslope and rolled back towards me, 20'+ from the flag, which I then 3 putted. Pathetic. But the next hole I made par, and then a par on the final par 3, which is the nicest hole on the course, and only 112 yards from the blacks (103 from the forward tee's) which is completely over water. If you miss short, its water, miss left your safe, miss right or drive the green, you're in a horrible bunker. I nailed a beautiful wedge shot to 10 feet, and left my putt hanging on the lip, literally, with a slight tap for par.

I really don't agree. The misses are just as important as the great shots. You can't improve a well struck shot, we focus on the bad ones because thats where we need work. My drives are long, but 1 in 4 is a wild slice (instead of my natural fade on my better shots, or straight drives on my great ones), so obviously I need work there. Those are the important shots, not the ones that did just what you wanted.

Surprise bonus 9.....didn't think I could play today, but I snuck in 9+ holes.  A cluster was in front of me so I skipped ahead to the 4th hole knowing it would be pretty fast from there to the house.  I used the 5 holes as a warmup...LOL (I paired-up with a 2-some)

Starting on 10, I kept score.....(back9 rating is 36.0CR and 133 slope) 2 Birdies-1 bogey.....35..........1 under par.  Another nice mini-stretch of golf.  The 34 I scored a couple days ago was paired with a 43..LOL   This one is hanging out there......for now.

91 on a very wet course. They wouldn't even let the carts out. I wasn't planning on walking with my knee issues, but I did. I had trouble on the squishy shots with lots of shots coming up short.

Played Evergreen CC yesterday in a Senior Scratch League match.

37-40-77 - 3 bogey's in a 4 hole stretch on the back 9 cost me.  But played pretty well overall.

We all should examine our misses and refer to them as challenges or future goals. Full disclosure, I lost to the 8th seed as the number 1 seed in our club championship.

What I take away from this round

1. Making a birdie on top of my opponent when he chipped in for birdie

2. Making good decisions given my opponents result.

3. I never gave up and realized the better golfer won on that day. (Hey the US beat the Russians in 1980) - I know a little hyperbole.

Take aways/ Future goals -

How to accept and embrace the pressure which only comes with getting into those situations.

Here are your highlights: 1. my course management is good. 2. I did birdie the first hole  3. .......next hole I made par, and then a par on the final par 3, which is the nicest hole on the course, and only 112 yards from the blacks (103 from the forward tee's) which is completely over water.

Focus on that because we remember the good stuff.

Keep swinging and good luck this season!

Worst round of the year last night.  Shot a 46 on the toughest and longest of the four 9-hole courses my league plays.

2 pars

5 bogeys

1 DB

1TB

Good:  Drove the ball very well.  That's about it

Bad:  Everything else !  Duffed my second shot on both par 5's as I picked my head up and topped the ball. Took the DB and Tb on these holes.  So a 7 and an 8 added up real quick! My mental game was crap too.

My opponent was getting a stroke on 6 holes and he played his best round of the year, so I got whupped 7-2.

    • Day 610 - 2026-06-03 Got some work in between lessons today. Rare late day, teaching until 7:30pm.
    • Let's continue on… Cool. The thing is, nobody's claiming par is "reliable" and par's inclusion piggy-backs in the course rating, which is awfully close to par and, thus, brings par in to make it make sense. Once again, for those in the back… (CR - Par) just makes it really easy to know what kind of score you need to shoot to best, match, or play worse than your handicap index. Yes, when par is different, the players from the higher par tees get an extra stroke (72 vs. 71, the 72s get an extra stroke. That makes sense and is a small complication (more info at https://www.usga.org/content/usga/home-page/handicapping/roh/Content/rules/Committee%20Content/USGA/LG_R6d.htm). However, most of the time, this adjustment will not be needed, as many courses play to the same par for the same genders from all sets of tees. And, the rare times it is needed, par (measured in whole numbers, integers) and strokes (also whole numbers/integers) map easily and the idea is easily grasped. Dean seems to be unaware of the fact that most every golfer carries something orders of magnitude more powerful than the highest end desktop computers available the last time he consulted with the USGA in their pockets. While it is quaint that his club puts printouts by the first tee… get with the times, Dean. Look up your handicap index and course handicap in the GHIN app and get on with it. It's a better system than the one that didn't account — at all — for a difference in the playing conditions (via an algorithm, not a judgment). Dean's assertions about the "less precise system because of par" continues to make absolutely zero sense. Right, it still changed tee to tee. Now it just changes differently… and in a way that more accurately reflects the score you need to shoot to play to your handicap. Previously, a 1.1 index would get 1 stroke on a 66.7/122 par-72 course. Now they give four strokes back to the course and must shoot 68 to play to their handicap. This makes way more sense. The 18-shot difference is a pretty extreme example. Maybe a long course that also offers a par-three set of tees could play that long, but… man, that's not going to be super common. Sensationalistic much, Dean? Also, once those unhappy (complete assumption) golfers realize a) what the change shows them (playing to net par = playing to your index) and b) realizes that their differential is going to be the same… I think they'll get over their initial questions. No. And yet… if he shoots the same scores, he'll get the same handicap index he has now. But he'll know on each course what score he needs to shoot to "play to his handicap." Sheesh, Dean. This stuff isn't that hard to figure out. Enough with the sensationalistic stuff. I don't find it "unacceptable" at all. Then again, I'm not nearly 80 and seemingly incapable of doing basic math these days. No. This literally makes no sense, as that part of the differential calculation and the course handicap calculation remains identical. Good! No. Categorically wrong. They should have been adjusting their handicaps all along. Previously it was by subtracting the course ratings. Which… is still basically what's done, with the addition of the course rating being "baked in" to the course handicap calculation. Dean is wrong here, or doing some math heretofore unknown by the world. When par is the same, what determines the difference in handicaps? The course rating, which Dean loves! Sheesh! You had to things when players were in situations like this before, too. This is getting exhausting. He keeps using words like "less precise" and "unfair" but does not seem to understand what they mean. This is like the Princess Bride meme: "you keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means." The caps reduce upward movement. Committees have reign to reduce a player's handicap, and there's still an automatic Exceptional Score Reduction. I'm going through these more quickly now because… well, it's silly how badly Dean misses the mark with this blog post. Dean is literally confusing the upward movement (with the soft and hard caps) here with the exceptional score reduction which is used when lowering handicaps due to an exceptionally good score. The creators of the WHS are handicap experts. They know more about the current state of handicaps/handicapping than the Pope Emeritus. It's been shown to have almost no effect across all handicaps. Yes, some 36s under the old system are now 35s under the new system. Yawn. He should have stopped there. It's easier to apply and makes more sense. This makes no sense. It's "not complex" but players will have to guess? And, for men or women, the stroke index of each hole doesn't change because they play a different set of tees. They get a different number of strokes, but it's always been true that when you get 14 strokes you apply a stroke to stroke index holes 1-14, and when you get 11, to just holes with a SI of 1-11. Objection, your honor. Assumes facts not in evidence. Dean's just out here continuing to make shit up about "the inaccuracy of par" and ignoring that with Par (an integer) came the Course Rating, which he agrees is precise and accurate. No. No, this is inaccurate. Also, as noted, you can randomly assign stroke indexes, and so long as all the low numbers or all the high numbers are not clumped together at the beginning or ends of the 18 holes, matches generally work out the same. This is inaccurate. It is an algorithm that looks at scores. That's it. Also, this is better than a system like the prior one where no such thing existed at all. Wildly inaccurate and off-base. Did they do actual testing? No need. They have millions and millions of rounds and ran many, many, many simulations. That's testing. Dean seems to continue to be unaware of the fact that computers are more powerful now than they were in 2002. But, he's nearly 80, so we can understand if not going so far as to give him a pass on how much he gets wrong. Cool. Noted. For the most part that was because many countries haven't been able to rate enough of their courses. :sigh:
    • Day 3 (3 Jun 26) - More work on keeping arms connected today - hard foam balls with 7i and 5w…..
    • Day 274 6-3 flow drill getting chest through, arms in front. Arms get a little pinned to the side, not as much in front as I want them when I add speed.
    • Shot 48 yesterday.  For me bogey golf is good.  I was 10 over through 7 and figured with a Par 3 and 4 coming on all I needed was birdie / par to get my 45. I had a great tee shot on #8 and sunk  a 5 footer for birdie, game was coming together, now just needed par on #9. Had a great tee drive and the green was within range for a hoped GIR or nGIR.  But I pulled the shot left into tall weeds and needed to take a drop.  So much for par, but a bogey for 46 is still good for me. I hit my lob wedge to get over a small tree and saw the ball riding nicely  on line to the pin when my club hit the ball a 2nd time on my follow through causing the ball to change directions and ended up @ pin high but along the same tall weeds I just took an unplayable out of.  had no room for a backswing, Just hacked at it and it shot across the green to the rough on the far side.  Needed a chip & 1 putt got a triple bogey. you can see the hole fall apart in the screenshot below.
