Simple question, and a good way to point out that we have a Q&A forum now: how do you keep your grips soft and tacky? How do you wash the grips? How do you store them? What grips stay soft and tacky the longest?

Actually, I'd love some good tips on this. Really I should re-grip everything, but I don't want to pay for it.

how do you keep your grips soft and tacky?

1. Make sure they are not worn out.
2. Clean them during a round if they get a bit dirty. I would give them a good cleaning after every round.

How do you wash the grips?

I use dish wash soap, warm water and a nylon brush.

How do you store them?

I can't help but leave my clubs in my car if I am golfing after work. I always bring my clubs inside when I am at home. There is just less fluctuation in temperature and moisture indoors. I keep the clubs in my bag year round.

What grips stay soft and tacky the longest?

PURE Grips. 100% the best grips on the market. They just use a superior material for their grips. They are injected molded so they have a more consistent cross-section. They last 3-4x as long as any grip on the market. They have great feel and are very tacky. I personally use the DTX grips since they have extra texture to the grip.

I was mine with dish soap also. During the round I wipe them down with a towel and I always keep them dry. I change mine every season. I just put som Golf Pride Z Cords on my clubs but I will have to give Pure Grips a try next time. Ive heard nothing but good things about them.

I just wipe them down with a wet down a couple times a week, then let them air dry. I don't leave my clubs in my car, I keep them in the bag but in the house.

For me the PURE DTX are a perfect combo of tacky and soft (just a little bit squishy).

I have Iomic grips on most of my clubs.  A quick scrub with water will get them back to tacky, and if you add a little vinegar, its even better.  I've found that Iomic grips will stay really tacky for a couple of years of pretty heavy use, although they do start to wear a bit.  I've recently put a PURE DTX grip on my driver, and I'm VERY happy with the feel and the tackiness.  Its only been about 6 weeks that I've had it, so I can't comment on the longevity.  However, if it holds up anything like the Iomics do, I'll be changing, the price is significantly lower.

I just scrub the grips a couple times with a damp towel after each round, whether I used that club or not. Brushes and soaps aren't necessary. My grips on my irons are Royal oversize, had them 20+ years, still soft and tacky (one odd replacement Lambkin perma wrap oversize as well, maybe 15 years old, still fine). Most of the reason they are still good is that I clean them and get them damp often, I believe that most of what makes grips hard and slick is not cleaning the dirt and sweat from them immediately after you play.

The grips on my newer woods are Golf Pride Tour Wrap midsize, they are still in great shape but only a year old. The local golf stores don't stock Royal grips. I expect these grips to last for years as well.

Climate also helps, when I lived in CO and AZ it took more effort to keep the grips tacky, low humidity. Back then I used Victory grips, they worked fine until I quit carrying them, threw them in the closet and they dried out. Also try not to keep clubs in your car trunk or garage, that also dries the grips out if it's hot and/or low humidity where you live.

The grip I am having trouble with is a superstroke 1.67 that is maybe 2 years old, even though I clean it like the others it is decomposing. Not good at all---

1. how do you keep your grips soft and tacky?

I wash and dry them frequently.

How do you wash the grips?

With rubber or synthetic rubber, I use Clean & Tacky and a nylon brush.

How do you store them?

In the house

What grips stay soft and tacky the longest?

In my experience, Lamkins. But now I use Winn Dri-Tac Grips because I like them really soft and tacky, and I expect them to wear sooner.

I use rubbing alcohol. It removes the grime easily and brings the grips back to being tacky quick. It works great. For Pure grips, the dry time is a bit longer but it is still very effective.

Hot water and simple green.  Simple green really brings the tackiness back out by removing that deep down dirt and oil.  This is especially important because it is dusty in the middle east.

I bought "Gripes" grip cleaning wipes sold by Lamkin to keep in my golf bag and they work great.  They are pre-moistened and come in a re-sealable pouch of 15.  One wipe cleans five grips and they dry pretty quickly.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
