The biggest improvement in my game this year has been the percentage of fairways I hit on my drive. At the beginning of the year the percentage of fairways hit was 46%. By the end of the year the percentage of fairways I now hit is 83%

The thing that made the biggest difference was my posture and stance when I set up to drive.

What is the biggest improvement, if any that you have noticed in your game this year?

For me, it probably about every aspect of game that I am trying to get a handle on, since I just now got serious with the game. But lately, my drive has improved with some of the more recent changes. Playing golf from the fairway (rather than the woods) is much more enjoyable (smile). Evolvr has been a great thing for me in helping with my full swing changes.

Improvement has been slow ... I'd say I have been focusing more on GIR this year, long irons/hybrids may be slightly better.    Actually the most improved part of my game is par 3 tee shots - seem to not fold like a circus tent when I stand over a long par 3 anymore.

its easier for me to identify what part of my game is in the tank ... that would be short iron/wedge approach shots - used to be a strength, now it's a liability - those are the only clubs I routinely fat or more likely thin over the green.    I think it has something to do with trying to hit down and take mini-divots, which seems to lead me into trouble, as I don't really focus on with other shots ... I don't understand it, but I have to put some serious range time in to fix it...

Putting for me. Went with the left hand low grip and never looked back. Saved 3.4 putts per round on average so far. I also use this grip on my short chips too.  I also put a little extra time in on reading greens which has helped.

Then again, I am only 8 weeks into my new season.

Toe hits. They have been killing me for years but I didn't realize that was the problem until last year. This year has been much better now that I know what is causing the problem. That coupled with playing many more rounds helped me have my best season ever.

Otherwise new clubs (lower loft) and an extra inch on the clubs has helped me keep my swing smoother. I don't need to take a big hack to get the distance I want. It's nice to have a little extra in reserve in case I need it and otherwise just concentrate on putting a smooth swing on the ball (without hitting it off the damn toe!).

My drives have improved the most.  I went from a good drive of 200 to 210 to averaging 230-240 with my best drive last week of 280+.  On top of the better distance I'm hitting straighter and keeping the ball in the fairway a lot more.

My biggest improvements are A. Driving accuracy and B. Hitting the hybrid off the fairway

I'm still not a very accurate driver but I improved leaps and bounds over previous years

Distance with all clubs. I'm making more solid contact with them and thus hitting them further. Accuracy through the bag needs to improve.

If anything I feel I failed to make any gains in 2015. Without instruction it took me several months just to get my scores where I wanted and even then I relied heavily on course management for that. 2015 was my worst driving season since I started in 2012. Anyone that's see me on the tee is usually amazed I don't score worse. Though my iron play is pretty strong compared to most amateurs.

I had a makeover in putting that helped the second half of the season.

First, I regripped my Ping B60 putter with a Winn XPro 1.18 oversized grip. At first I continued to use a left-hand low hand grip, my standard for the past 12 years. But, I started having distance control problems for putts longer than 25 feet.

Someone suggested a double interlock grip, and I gave it a try. I found it quieted my dominant (right) hand without causing power problems on longer putts. And, I could tell better if I was hitting the ball square or not. I had several good putting rounds in August, and then had 7 one-putts in the club championship.

The thicker club grip plus the new hand alignment has me optimistic for next year. :-D

Note: I actually stumbled across a web link on the double overlap - supposedly it was borrowed from tennis players who use it for backhands. (They must have really fast hands to go interlock while running sideways). Sorry I can't locate the link today!

Driving for me, and course management.  Taking a breath and reminding myself to play safe, especially if things are going badly.  It's tempting to try to rescue a bad shot with a high-risk recovery, but being a bit more patient with myself has yielded good benefits.

With the driver, alignment, ball position in my stance, posture, keeping my right elbow close, and not trying to hit the cover off it have all improved my fairways hit, and have gone a long way towards reducing (not eliminating!) my slice.  It's a lot to remember at address!

Swing "form" improvement.  I took a series of lessons to overhaul my swing.  I say "form" b/c it has not significantly improve my score yet.   That will come slowly, surely.   I hope.

This has been a milestone year for me.

Driving distance and accuracy improved, putting improved, chipping improved. Equipment changes to lighter and more forgiving clubs. Applying more concepts from LSW to my game. Having everything written down in one book helps a lot.

Still working on my swing mechanics (more keys) to help with more consistency.  Trying to eliminate really bad mishits. Working on short game and game management. The "trees are 90% air" rule doesn't always work. Arrrg. Going to have to work on better strategies when behind trees.

Actually, this has been an LSW year for me!

Definitely it was the driver. I was longer from the start and then I made a swing change and started finding the fairway most of the time.  Now if I can figure out chipping I'd feel pretty good about my game.

Made some nice improvements with my putting this year. Specifically with my speed control and from 4ft and in. Stroke is more pendulum like and less and rolling the toe open on the takeaway.

Course Planning - thanks to LSW - was accused of playing 'boring' golf a couple of weeks ago, which was meant as a massive compliment. As a bogey golfer there's almost always more downside than upside risk, so the conservative option is often best.

Being my first year golfing I played my first 8+ rounds teeing off with my 5 iron to avoid a savage slice I was born with.... After plenty of range time I started hitting way more fairways off the box, stopped trying to murder the ball,  and am now averaging about a 260-270 yard straight arrow off the box. However some drives still get away from me I am extremely excited to see how my game improves in 2016

    • Depends on how short you were coming up on these shots. A bit more wind? Also, maybe you were swinging at 2-3 mph slower the next day.  I think the biggest thing is not adjusting. Like making assuming your stock shot is not enough and taking 1 club up. Not sure what type of adjustments you were making in your decision making.
    • No one should measure a joint mobility away from that joint. If you go to physical therapy, they are not measuring your knee mobility based on your midline. It is based at the joint. Shoulder mobility should be measured in reference to the shoulder joint.
    • He's using a driver swing, while I used the iron swing. Bryson goes from about 65° B to 15° B, hence the 50°. If you bend your right elbow, you're going to pull your hands across your chest some. Conversely, if you abduct your right arm and hold onto a grip with your left arm, you can see how extending the right elbow as we do in the golf swing during the downswing will "pull" the right shoulder/humerus forward (adducting it, as going from 65° to 15° of abduction is). Even people who pull their right shoulder WAY too far around them eventually get it "back in front" when their right arm/elbow extends. So, such a motion shows up as shoulder adduction even though the movement that causes it is just widening the trail elbow. The left hand on the grip almost "pulls" the hands forward as the left arm can't stretch much (there's some shoulder protraction, but that's almost maxed out at P4). Oh, I downloaded it and watched it (and commented there) before he blocked me. It's what led to him posting the comment in the "update" above. 😄  Single shoulder range of 75°, and that's going out well into the follow-through. 50° Max range up to impact. Manavian's video is bad. He keeps saying "midline" which is just a horrible way to look at it. He also kept saying that the club was moving that amount — also wrong. Adding left and right together is really freaking dumb. Another golf instructor said "That's like saying the player has 100 degrees of knee bend (adding left knee bend to right knee bend) 🤦‍♂️" (similar to what the biomechanist said about squatting). Also, see my post above about elbow bend. That's why Plummer’s alignment stick demo is so intellectually dishonest. A golfer can't get anywhere near that position on the left with his left hand on the alignment stick (quoted below).
    • That makes no sense at all.  so, I watched that Instagram. Here is a summary...  Bryson.... Address: Trail Shoulder 0 degrees adduction. P4: Trail Shoulder 65-deg abduction. Impact: Right shoulder 15-deg abduction. P9: 10 degrees adduction. Rory... Address: Trail Shoulder 16 degrees adduction. P4: Trail Shoulder 26 degrees abduction. Impact: Right shoulder 0 degrees abduction.  P9: 18 degrees of adduction.  DJ... Address: Trail Shoulder 4 degrees adduction. P4: Trail Shoulder 42 degrees abduction. Impact: Right shoulder 2 degrees abduction.  P9: 15 degrees of adduction.  Their point is that arm doesn't stay on the trail side. That the arms have to get across the chest from P4 to P9. I mean they do. What matters is the rate of which it happens relative to the position of the swing. The trail shoulder at P9 is not abducted a lot. The range of that total abduction movement is like 40 to 70 degrees. Bryson might be an outlier. Rory might be an outlier as well.  A couple of points.  1. None of them had any adduction at impact. So, this tells me the trail arms stays on the trail side of the body at impact. Is it moving towards lead shoulder, yes. It doesn't happen till post impact. The right side of the body is moving towards the target, so the arms don't have to as much as people think.  2. Trail shoulder adduction from Impact to P9 is 18 to 25 degrees.  3. P9 adduction of the trail shoulder is only about 2 to 12 degrees more adducted than at address. The arms/hands stay in front of the chest a long-time post impact. If Rory, from his address position just rotated his body towards the target and raised up his arms so he is at P9. He basically didn't have to move his trail arm further across his chest than where he started at address. Visualize that for a bit. I bet for people who tend to stall and drag their arms across their body to hit the ball, that would emphasize how much the arms stay in front of the body and how much you have to turn.
    • Do you know how Manavian is measuring his shoulder adduction-abduction that purports to demonstrate 50 degrees or motion in Bryson's downswing? I know the broader biomechanics research/scientific literature on this suggests shoulder adduction-abduction is only a modest contributor of force generation in the downswing, so I'm definitely not convinced by anything he's arguing, I'm just curious how different people can be claiming to use ostensibly the same "data" to tell a much different story.
