Perusing the tennis discussion boards yesterday, there is way more surface animosity in the women's tennis than in women's golf. From a quick perusal, it does seem the drug has performance enhancing qualities - not sure in and of itself or in conjunction with another drug.

Quote

If Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova had played on the PGA Tour, she would not have been suspended for her recent drug violation.

Sharapova, 28, tested positive for the substance meldonium, she disclosed March 7 in a news conference in Los Angeles. The five-time Grand Slam champion, who won Wimbledon in 2004 as a 17-year-old, will be provisionally suspended by the International Tennis Federation, effective March 12.

honestly, i see no issues with performance enhancing drugs in golf.  i say let them use whatever they want.  its not like theyre running around or jumping in golf. let them smoke dope, or take uppers, whatever.  makes no difference, i think.

Well. Some drugs calm your nerves. That may have a significant affect when putting on Sundays.

However, I think some of the drugs that are on the banned list is questionable.

So what? I say let them take whatever they want. Drugs won't let you play better than you are physically capable of. Players can decide what they want to put in their bodies. Anyways, it's just golf, it's not a real sport.

Them's fightin' words!

Pretty soon WADA is going to ban water. Athletes use it and it improves their performance.

Hell, that means the makers of Gatorade, Lucozade and Redbull would be royally screwed ;-)

i know, i know lol....i just cant rightly call it a sport.  i can call it a sporting activity, and i know thats pedantic, but its not a sport.  neither is bowling, horse racing, or NECKCAR

Meldonium wouldn't be used by golfers as a PED. There isn't any gain for an endurance oriented drug in golf, maybe speed golf but that's about it. WADA does ban the use of IV's so they kinda ban water lol.

An endurance based drug would be beneficial, on the Sunday of a long week with 5 hour rounds when you're on the back nine. Trust me, if you walk the course every day for a week, on top of practice and media responsibilities, you'll be pretty exhausted by the end of it and would find some kind of endurance oriented drug helpful if it could sharpen awareness or improve performance when exhausted.

Yupp, physical endurance is essential. Not in the least how it affects clarity of thought and focus.

The drug increases supply of oxygen, which reduces build up of lactic acid and toxins in general which helps in faster recovery and hence performance in round 2,3,....

Lot of folks still think when they hear doping, they only think of it as something that causes increase in strength, especially 'expulllosssive sturrrenght'.

You're not gonna build up that much, if any, lactic acid playing golf unless you are getting very winded playing. I guess it would be useful in that sense but I'm assuming people playing at the top level would not have this issue at all given how much they play.

Regardless of who you are, you will be tired at the end of a week where you are walking at least 7 miles a day, practicing for several hours, and participating in required media events. It's just a matter of being worn down. How much the drug does for that, I don't know, but I imagine it's likely better than nothing.

Yeah, I'm sure being able to drive 330 instead of 290 would make no difference.

How funny is it that some 'fans' believe clean athletes should be forced to put something foreign in their body to be competitive, for their own selfish entertainment? I guess I'm old fashioned. Also, there is that pesky little FDA issue about using controlled pharmaceuticals outside of their intended use, Why does something always spoil our fun?

1. tell me what drug will increase a professional golfers drives by 40 yards.

2. did i say "forced"?  i said let them, if they want. i dont care one way or the other.

3. do you really think i believe it to be a realistic scenario?

I just don't understand why anyone advocates "just let them take whatever they want".... That's all I really have to say, because this is too close to the idea that drugs shouldn't be illegal, which I will never agree with.

I'm just saying that I don't think professional sports really matter. Not as in THE BIG PICTURE. Sure, I get immense enjoyment from watching my boy Tigs slay chumps, but in the end it doesn't matter not even a little bit. So in that sense, I'm saying let them do whatever they want.
