Some people use "Ireland" for both "Northern Ireland" and the "Republic of Ireland."  They're different entities, and the prefix can disambiguate them.

Also there are odd things that combine both countries. For example, the Ireland rugby team contains players from Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. However, only Northern Ireland is part of Great Britain, so actually, Northern Irish athletes can choose which they represent at the Olympics. All very confusing, admittedly!
