I pulled up an article published a year ago where it stated that Donald Trump thinks that golf is something to aspire to. . .http://fortune.com/2015/07/01/donald-trump-golf-rich-elite/

Seniors have a lot of time to play, but generally can't afford $475/round ***.My feeling is that $10 rounds should always be available to seniors. That's also something to aspire to, and it's something to help make their lives better in their golden years.

***as if there are many of us who could afford that kind of price :-P

Somewhere like at my home courses, and various others around me.

I can't even go to MacDonalds for $10, and you want to be able to play golf for that?

In the fall, I can get $25 rounds with a senior discount at one of my courses. That is walking of course.

I can walk 9 for $13 around here at probably the nicest public course. I think that's a pretty reasonable price. I don't see how a course could afford to go any lower than that.

Same course as above, after 1 pm on the weekend all you can golf with a cart for $25. I can almost always get in 27+ holes starting at 2-3 pm. I'm starting to think it's a good thing living here :-)

Golf may be aspirational, but there are more players on America's goat tracks on any given day than will play at Doral in an entire year.

You play his kind of course once for the experience; then, you fly back home and play a $20 muni twice a week.

Okay, the point isn't who can get the cheapest rates, obviously. I just quoted it there because that's what my senior friends pay when I pay $11. Don't start on that $11, either.  :-P

The point is Donald wants golf only for the elite.

Golf should be "for" whomever the free market dictates can afford to play it.

If Donald wants to price his courses for the elite, he has every right to do so. I could never afford to play one of his courses, but I wouldn't even if I could. But, that is another argument all together.

Golf, among other hobbies, isn't necessarily cheap.

Whether it is hockey or golf or darts or whatever, it all adds up. Like stated above, Ill pay $300-$400 for a round at a course with meaning that I typically wouldn't play but with my $350 a month membership at my home club I typically play 15-20 rounds a month.

I think if Joe Schmo said this nobody would care, but because its Trump its a big deal.

I think golf is already aspirational, in that some of us, perhaps many of us, aspire to improve.  We aspire to play special courses on holiday.  Some of us aspire to be able to join a private club.  What Mr. Trump doesn't want to have to deal with at his properties is the everyday middle-class daily-fee-course golfer, and he's priced his golf courses to financially exclude them.  Many business succeed by selling at least the image of exclusivity, by telling people that if they can afford "this" they're special somehow, and that's what Trump is selling.

I remember when this came out, I checked to see how well his courses were doing.  I checked the tee sheet for both the Scotland and Ireland courses, and  very very few tee times were taken.  I just now checked the availability of times at his Aberdeen course for  Friday, and found we can book a 4ball at 8:30, 8:45, 10:00, 0:15, and 11:00, among others.  Not exactly packing them in, is he?  At Doonbeg in Ireland, the online booking system was disabled at about this time last year, perhaps it was embarrassing.  He's salesman, and he gets off by telling everyone how well he's doing, how smart he is, all that stuff.  Wasn't it Andre Aggassi that told us that "image is everything"?

There are deals to be had you just have to be flexible. I played a course last sunday that is normally $44 a round for $13. It wasn't a prime time slot and was only for one person but that's what you give up for those types of prices.

If I manage to play 60 rounds in a year (and that's not too far off last year), I'll average $12.50 per round on my City of Dayton courses. That's an annual $450 privilege rates card plus $5 per round divided by 60 rounds.

Of course, the city courses will never be called the "nicest" and I play enough other courses with different people that I spend more than that.

    • Playing irons only may lead to some short-term gains, but you'll want to at least practice with the driver if you ultimately have some decently good goals.
    • He plays from 68.3 / 124.  A combo tee setup of normal mens and seniors.   I play from 69.7/127.   He left after taking a triple on 14 and then leaving.  Which plays to what I think his plan is,   He doesn’t stroke on 14 but would have to take bogey for non completed holes on the way in.   Maybe that’s giving him too much credit, but he found a way to add 4 shots to his score over three holes so….     I looked up his last 20 rounds in GHIN and he has a lot of rounds at easier courses (rating and slope) that are higher than his normal rounds at home.   Since I mostly have his front nine score during the match (36) to go on, he has three nine hole scores at our course posted that are 41-43. I wrote the whole thing up to the head of our golf association who runs all the tournaments.  Our pro is not involved officially in the tournaments because the golf associations are separate from the club.   He’s pretty well known for this, however I was pretty shocked at how well he played carrying a 15.   I think eventually they will do something, a lot of people have complained.  The golf association threw someone out a couple of years ago and it was a three month situation where the guy retaliated.  They probably are hesitant to go thru anything like that again.  That is a rather crazy story I might post about later.
