I need to get my clubs re-gripped for the first time and I'm wondering about different grips out there.  I bought two wedges recently, one has a softer Winn dri-tac grip and the other has a firmer Lamkin grip.  I like them both but those are my wedges and I swing them with slower tempo.  I'm wondering if any particular firmness is more suitable for me.  I'm 24 with above average hand strength and a faster swing speed.  They both feel fine but I don't know if any potential issues may be amplified with longer clubs than my wedges. I've started playing golf more seriously this past year so there's a lot to learn about smaller details.  And there's always the case that I may be overthinking it and it's just a matter of feel.  Just wanted to get y'alls input.  Thanks a bunch!

The type of grip totally depend on the golfer. There is no generalization saying one type of grip will do this or that.

I believe the most popular grip is the Golf Pride Tour Velvet. I know a lot of golfers like the cord grips because they absorb moisture better.

I am going to throw a brand you probably haven't heard of. Pure Grips, http://www.puregrips.com/

Here are the reasons I use them,

1. They are made with injection molded 100% rubber. This means there is no seam on them, and they are more consistent in terms of weight and thickness.

2. They last a long time. I've heard people having these grips last upwards of 2 golf seasons. I've used Tour Velvet, and they last me 6 months. I've played with Tour New Decade and they will last me about 1 golf season.

I use the DTX grips, http://www.puregrips.com/grips/view/dtx_midsize

Grips also have different sizes along with textures which one should also consider when choosing grips.

Some are better for a player who wears a glove and some for players who do not use gloves.

Some grips are less abrasive and easy on hands and fingers while others may cause blisters or create callous on fingers.

Some play better in wet or humid conditions while most are considered all purpose grips.

As @saevel25 mentioned above, I've become a big fan of Pure Grips also.

And one other small detail "tape" When re-gripping clubs players often add an extra layer of tape to the top or mid section to achieve a slightly larger diameter as a preference.

Thanks for the input, I'm going to look into Puregrips, I'll see if any of the places around here stock them.  I forgot to mention that I do know my grip size, I'm a standard. Also, I wear a glove, and between lifting and guitar playing I have various callouses already so abrasiveness isn't too much of an issue.  Also my hands are dry and I don't play in wet conditions if that helps.  I guess what I'm curious about is if a certain grip firmness can be better/worse for swing mechanics like releasing the club depending on the golfer.  Again, I may be overthinking it...

I avoid the winn dri-tacs.  They feel good at first but they wear fast and get mushy.  Pro golfers prefer a firmer grip for control.  GP Tour velvet, Lamkin ace, and GP New Decade are all good examples of firm grips with widespread usage.  Also consider ribbed vs round and midsize vs standard.

I just re-gripped some older clubs using compressed air, masking tape, and pump hairspray.  I did 9 clubs for less than $30.  I used Lamkin rel 3gen.  The nice thing is that if you don't like the grips you can easily swap them out.

John

Edit added: I have Lamkin UTX on my current clubs and they seem to be a tad softer than cords but not too soft.

Trying to compute that.

Cost of hairspray approx, $2.50

Cost of masking tape approx. $2.50

That leaves $25.00 left for 9 grips

$25.00 divided by 9 grips = $2.78 per cost of a grip

Sounds about right

I regrip my own clubs as well but I have never used hairspray or masking tape

I just use masking tape and compressed air, the hairspray really isn't needed.

I second this suggestion @caddystacks. If you're into re-gripping clubs yourself, these are very easy to work with. If you're not happy with how they went on, you can easily reposition them, and a bonus is you can use them immediately. Removal is just as easy when it comes time to replace.

I've owned and installed two sets. The most recent were the "Wraps" style (which I don't like quite as much as the "Pure Pro" grips I put on a previous set). There is still plenty of tack left on the first set which is going on the second season.

I'll second that. I liked the feel at first, but they just disintegrate after awhile, especially here in the Florida heat and humidity. Golf Pride Tour Velvet, and similar style grips (including some inexpensive knock offs) have held up well.

Thanks for all the input everyone.  I was a little skeptical about how soft the dri-tacs were. I did like some Lamkin grips but I'll see what's available today.  Seems like everyone prefers to regrip themselves, and I would too, space is the only issue right now.  That'll be remedied in a few weeks when I move though, so the next set I do will probably be on my own.

I was a Golf Pride guy for quite a while, but tried the Lamkins and have been with them ever since. The first time I tried re-gripping my own clubs, I was shaking in my shoes. Then I thought, "Wait a minute! You've changed clutches, brakes, hubs, rotors and bearings, shocks, brake lines, intake manifolds and carburetors! What the hell is so scary about a golf grip?!"

It's all up to you and how the grips feel to your hands. Since you're a relative newb to the game, you might change a few times before you hit on one that really grabs you.

I just started regripping my clubs this year as well. Talk about easy! I went with the Golf Pride CP2 Pro Midsize grips. Love the feel! Also regripped the wife's clubs with some Pure Grips and she really likes them.

Your numbers are close, but I didn't figure in the hairspray and I already had masking tape in the garage... lol

I didn't need masking tape on the long irons, but I found that the grips were a little loose (floppy) without the tape on the shorter irons.  I decided to use masking tape on all of them.  I think it helps to replicate the tape thickness when gluing them on.  I use hairspray because a guy down the street recommended it on bicycle grips so they don't slip, but they still come off easy.  Maybe overkill, but kinda my MO.

my coupla cents -

Winn grips are the SUXXOR.  they wear out faster than the inner thighs of Rosie O'Donells bluejeans.

PURE grips FTMFW. mines are going strong into season 3 right now.  DTX midsize for me.

    • I took a look at a 6,300 yard fairly easy course and it was 99% distance and then a 6,800 yard more challenging course and it was 97% distance. Do you have an example of one less that 95% or 90%? Maybe I am misunderstanding something. (6,310/220) + 40.9 = 69.6. Course rating is 70.0 with a 120 slope. Less than 1% other factors? (6,804/220) + 40.9 = 71.8. Course rating is 74.0 with a 140 slope. About 3% other factors? These are more extreme: (4,698/220) + 40.9 = 62.3. Course rating is 62.7 with a slope of 101.  (7,569/220) + 40.9 = 75.3. Course rating is 77.4 with a slope of 155. So long hard courses are 97% length and short easy courses are 99% length in these examples. I am new to this so maybe I am all wet.
    • I think in fairness what he means is Tommy's chances to win PGA Tour events are fairly similar in number to Rory's chances to win the Masters. I don't think he's remotely saying that Tommy and Rory are in the same league. Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but I took the comment as meaning if he keeps giving himself chances to win then eventually he will win one. Rory had a thing in his head about the Masters and won anyway. Tommy has a thing in his head about PGA Tour events. They do seem fairly analogous to me.
    • Don't get me wrong, I like TF from a nice-guy-next-door perspective but I was surprised at the nerves he showed on the 2nd putt on 17th. That was unmistakably a stroke of a player who had already submitted to the writing on the wall. Honestly I would not expect that out of a veteran tour player. I would have liked to continue rooting for him but gotta see a bit more fight from him. Rory could be reasonably accused of being a head case but he is a fighter. Big difference.
    • Um no. Rory Wins PGA Tour 29, EU 19, Majors 5, FedEx Cup 3 Tommy PGA Tour 0, EU 7, Majors 0, FedEx 0 He may win eventually, but he’s not in the same league as Rory.
