I was a little surprised we didn't have a thread.  Anyone watching this happening at the gorgeous TPC Boston?  One of my favorite courses to play on Tiger.

Things that have happened so far:

* Jim Furyk teases us by opening with three birdies, pars out until a birdie on #18.

* Phil Mickelson's score on hole 6, round 1, makes us want to sing a song from Frozen.  Sorry Phil.

* Smylie Kaufman opens birdie-eagle-birdie-birdie-birdie round two.

The playoffs, man . . .I think the lack of a thread here (and the relatively little talk about it elsewhere) just means people really don't give a damn about the playoffs.  The Barclays is pretty good . .but once they start reducing the field, for whatever reason, I totally lose interest.  I think the 10 million they give out for the Fedex Cup every year is the biggest pile of totally wasted money in golf . .maybe all sports.  It's convoluted, anti-climactic and nobody really cares about it . .except the players, of course. . that's a nice chunk of change.

I've been peaking at the leaderboard a bit . .nice to see Rory playing well for a change.

It's also Labor Day weekend so many people are enjoying the weekend with their family.  Thanks to the Tropical storm warning we changed our plans to avoid being stranded on Fire Island, as usual the weather people were wrong and we should have gone anyway.

Fantastic approach on 18 from Casey to give him a tap in eagle. He moves 3 ahead of the field,-15.

Agree with Rainmaker, the fedex cup doesn't mean a whole lot to golf fans.

Casey likes it,of course. He chose it over the Ryder cup.

Interesting thought and maybe correct but I'm intrigued just cuz the top guys are in the field.  While I don't yet feel this as a "playoff" akin to any major or college sport, it's compelling to me cuz the big guns are battling it out.  I've been surprised by the lack of attention to it on this site.  I'm into it.

Rory is tied for the lead. I guess I'll have to watch the last few holes.

Rory is playing really well, especially putting.  Maybe he just missed his Scotty Cameron putter.

what are your thoughts on Kevin Chappell hitting  out of the hazard on #2 bouncing off rocks like a pin ball machine? Should he have taken the penalty drop instead? Pretty gutsy move IMO.

Well he got out of the hazard, right?

I find it striking that if you watched the tournament on the Golf Channel this morning, or on NBC this afternoon, there is nothing to indicate that what they're showing is on tape delay.   The only way I found out was by going to PGATour.com and seeing Rory McIlroy in the lead on the 14th hole, even though on TV he had not even teed off.

Not showing it live and not saying it's not live seems kind of fraudulent to me.   They should at least post some little sign on the screen that says "recorded earlier."

They said something in the first minute of the broadcast.

Big win, keeps him 3 years consecutive with a win.  He didn't get a win in 2013.....

12 total wins on the PGA tour with 4 majors and he's only 27.  This puts him tied for 80th with some notables:  (Paul Azinger, Zach Johnson, Steve Stricker)

I believe he can hit the 20 win mark eventually, which IMO is a very UNDERRATED milestone.  Only 40 golfers in the history of the PGA have ever reached 20 wins.

Some who are one shy:  Ernie Els, Tom Kite, Nick Price.

In fact I think he can still win a major or two.  Think about this, 6 majors and 24 wins.  That would best guys like Johnny Miller, Raymond Floyd, Hale Irwin.  That's pretty big.

I can't see him making it to Tom Watson status, but maybe Vijay, if you weight the majors.  Vijay has 34 wins, huge........

Mcilroy found his putter this week.

4 over after 3 holes then shoots -19 to win it.

Yes it's great to watch the big guns battling it out,the fact that it's called the fedex cup and there's shitloads of money involved doesn't mean much to me though.:-D

If he's really found the right technique/approach and hones it for a year so he's a steady above average or well above average putter, it's quite possible for him to make a return to the number one position down the road - his long game is so good.

Like most golfers, the difference between winning or losing for Rory is the putter.  With even half-decent putting, he's certainly the world #1.  If he's turned a corner on the greens, watch out for McIlroy to make a big run in the majors in 2017.

Nobody cares about golf after the majors are done, unless it's a Ryder Cup year (and even then, nobody cares UNTIL the Ryder Cup).  The logical solution would be to move the PGA Championship to the last weekend before Labor Day as the 'season finale,' but for money and visibility reasons, the Tour won't do it.

In fairness this year the PGA championship was much earlier than in years past due to the olympics, that said mid August is fine IMO. Then the 4-5 week play offs, then president or ryder cup.

Noticeably absent from the DBC is/was Hunter Mahan, whats happened to his game, it sure went south, did he hitch a ride with Michelle Wie?

Hes currently ranked 255 in the world golf rankings
