I suspect the angle in the photo is making it wider than it really is?

Let's get Greg Rutherford up there to show how it's done.

I don't recall how wide it is but when I played, it never entered my mind to try to jump over.  It has to be a decent leap.  Plus, a "fail" in the attempt would be a disaster.

It's not all that narrow.

Five feet, from memory?

I did not try to jump it, though I know I could have. Like @bkuehn1952 said, the results not only of missing but of injuring yourself or something else stupid could be very bad. What if your landing foot didn't stick and instead slid out from beneath you?

I think the photo is pretty accurate, I'd guess that the Burn is 8 or maybe 10 feet across.  Take a look at it here:

.  Its jump-able for moderately fit people (not me), but its more than a little hop.

I google earthed it and used the measure feature.  I was getting about 6 1/2 feet across for the most part

If I were playing a normal round at a local course, with nobody around, I'd probably jump over that to avoid a long walk around (if it's actually 6.5' and not 10' of course).

At St. Andrews, with folks watching...no way.

It's narrower at some parts than others. It's not 10' across. I really, really doubt a smaller woman is going to jump 10' comfortably.

If the Old Course Hotel will let me borrow a mtn bike, a concrete block, and a 2x12 by 6 ft, I'll see if it goes, but I have lost more than one set of forks learning this trick.

Hopefully, my 2017 tee time gels up later this month, and then I'll be perfectly happy taking the bridge.

Nah, that would take too long. Just carry an 8 foot 2"x4" in your bag and lay it down across the gap. It might stick out a little from your clubs, but it would fit in most bags besides the 14 club divider bags.
