Michael Jordan's golf swing is nearly as bizarre as Charles Barkley's

Michael Jordan might have the most loopy golf swing we have ever seen
Handicap

According to Michael Jordan's golf scores, he maintains a sub-2 handicap. According to his golf swing, I say it can't be below 20. The Bryan Bros. shot a video of Jordan swinging at the Floridian on Tuesday, and Jordan showed off one of the stranger, loopier swings I've ever seen.

There is definitely some Charles Barkley in there and maybe a little Jim Furyk as well. The setup is straight out of the Matt Kuchar playbook -- let the driver head rest just above the ground a little bit behind the ball. The takeaway is disgusting. He basically flings the head out away from his body while getting into a stance that everyone who has been to a youth basketball camp would describe as the "triple threat."

Then the club never gets extended on his backswing. It's basically just straight up in the air. It is honestly sort of impressive that he can get it back flush with the ball at all, much less hit it straight.

This is odd, too. I've seen Jordan swing before. It has never looked like Adam Scott or Rory McIlroy but it seems like he's getting looser with age. Regardless, if he's a 2 handicap, he's a 2 handicap (and maybe he's an elite putter).

That swing seems way shorter than I remember it having been.  Maybe age, or probably more accurately, mileage, is catching up to him finally?  (He's only 53 after all, but he does have roughly 8 billion NBA minutes logged - give or take a couple)

One thing that hasn't changed is that he really makes sure to have a nice looking A10.

Funny for a guy known for his ability to jump in the air he doesn't get much "thrust" with his golf swing. Interesting takeaway as well, Ryan Moore-esque.

Hasn't posted in a while.  Tsk, tsk Mr. Jordan.  I'm sure he's playing though...he has a house here in NC at the Peninsula Club last I heard.

Wow!  What's with these ex-NBA players and their goofy swings?

With that much athleticism, you would think they would have a great looking swing.

Wow, that clip from '94 was so different.  That swing looked great.  His current swing looks like he's been taking lessons from the Chuck Wagon!

yup. lends credence to my anecdote  "Wisht I din't know now, wat I didn't know then". People keep getting these online or tv "tips" and they then become homogenized filet gumbo or jambalaya.

Tiger is another example of that anecdote, amongst many others who have let too many tips/tricks/thoughts mess with their swing and their game.

interesting parallel. Perhaps owing to different sets of muscles involved? Baseball players for example often are decent golfers. With all the bobbing and weaving in hoops, I sometimes wonder if Shawn Clements wasn't a basketball player at one time, or a downhill skier. In any event, it works for him, and he has a number of followers, still a bit weird to watch. Then again....there was that guy  "Fosbury ". (or whatever his name was) doing his backwards pole vault flop.

@OrangeHog, Yes, that is why I usually only listen to "(insert name")..

Yes on the name, but no on the sport - it was the high jump. :)

And I disagree with @OrangeHog about Tiger.  I think his issues are all related to injuries or injury prevention.

Different kinds of movement. They aren't use to rotating in flexion. Hockey is maybe the most similar to golf? I think Hockey players tend to be better golfers than most other sports.

Huh? I wouldn't call that swing homogenous...more of an outlier, really.

Assuming he is able to play to a 2.0 at times, would anyone want to play him in a net match for $10,000 a hole? His big advantage is that type of money means little to him while I would be crapping in my shorts.

I'm probably nuts, but I like the way his backswing is so steep, then he shallows it out and gets the club onto the ball from the inside. (maybe because that's what I'm working on now)

While his swing looked odd or jerky at first, it's natural and athletic in that when I do one armed swings, his movement sorta matches what I feel like I need to do with the club to minimize my muscular effort.  (sorry I can't figure out how to remove the big PLAY button below!)

I'm sure there are all sorts of fundamentals wrong with his swing, but there are certainly some good things going on, right? Hip, shoulder rotation, diagonal sweet spot, etc. I'd be curious about a full 5sk diagnosis to see if this swing is anywhere near the level that would justify a low handicap (remembering the chart of keys vs handicap in LSW).

    • Has anyone played the new Maxfli forged irons? For the first time in I don't know how many years, they have come out with new clubs. From what I read, Maxfli was bought by Taylor Made a long time ago which then took all of their ball making technology and patents in order to get into that market. The club business was left to whither and the reorganized company, now a part of Dicks / Golfworks / Maltby, is producing these new clubs. (Their Tour X balls which I play are really good.) Anyway, I tried them both out at Golf Galaxy. There's a player's distance iron (XC-3) and a blade (XC-2) and both feel really, really nice, almost "Mizuno-like" in their soft buttery feel and they're a bargain at $800 for a set. I'm planning to ditch my Titleist's and want to go back to a forged iron. I almost pulled the trigger on the Mizuno Pro-245's last summer, but a damaged tendon sheath in my finger combined with a back injury messed up my golf game so I held off. Now the Pro-245's are no longer available, soon to be replaced by the MX-15. (At twice the price of the Maxfli's...that's what got my attention in the first place.) If anyone has played with the new Maxfli's or just tried them out like I did, let me know what you think.
