Dude ended up shooting 91-95.

Crazy conditions in the Bahamas. Have you guys been watching?

http://golfweek.com/2017/01/10/web-tour-bahamas-second-round-wind/

Quote

Greg Eason, a former All-American at UCF, didn’t make the cut. In fact, he didn’t come close, shooting 42 over with rounds of 91-95.

“I started with 36 golf balls,” Eason told the Web.com Tour. “I ended with four.”

(It’s not official, but 32 lost golf balls are believed to be a record, as well.)

But don’t worry Greg, you’re not alone. Three other rounds of 90-plus were recorded in the first two rounds. And 15 players failed to crack 80.

Judging by weather conditions, the golf carnage should continue over the next two days, with the final round tentatively schedule to finish Wednesday – and possibly Thursday.

Damn. I have to watch this. Is the wind really to blame for all that? Wouldn't he be better taking a series of shorter strokes? Or is that not possible?

Yea the wind can really effect the flight of the ball.  Even at a 135 yard par 3.  And these guys plays into so much longer distances.  We played a course that was so windy the ball wouldn't stay on the tee.  Had a good laugh.

We watched a bit of it on Monday. It was bad. They also had to deal with salt spray on some of the holes. Looked like fun though, but I wasn't competing.:-P

I'm curious as to the actual number, or how the "math" works out.

Let's assume he was gonna shoot 75-75 without losing any golf balls. That's 150.

Any time you lose a ball you're looking at a penalty stroke, or sometimes what amounts to two penalty strokes: stroke and distance. If you make a par with your third ball on a par three, you make a seven, not a five: that's four strokes for two balls.

So 32 balls lost is somewhere between 32 strokes (i.e. if you get to play without losing any distance) on a sliding scale up to 64 strokes lost (if it's pure stroke and distance: if you lose 100 yards of the 200-yard shot, it may cost 0.4 strokes, for example).

Yet he shot only 36 over what he would have playing relatively field average? With 32 balls? I dunno. :-) He must be counting balls he didn't lose but took out of play for some other reason, or gave to kids, or the standard bearer, or whatever.

I mean, if you actually lose 16 balls in a round of golf, you're probably not breaking 100.

Anyway, I couldn't believe they didn't just cancel the first round. What was their reason for continuing to play?

Note: Ha, Erik- I had a fairly similar post that I mostly erased.

Does that math even work?

Screen Shot 2017-01-11 at 9.25.52 AM.png

He had 19 holes where he shot over par. 17 holes where he shot par or better.

[bunch of erased stuff because @iacas beat me to it. But I'll post the scorecard for others to ponder.]

I played a round like that at Galloway National in Jersey. When the wind comes in that place is a nightmare. I lost two sleeves that day and I wanted to quit golf forever. Kudos to him for toughing it out and not withdrawing.

Why was this event even played in these conditions? Is there not a line where it crosses over from challenging competition to total farce?

I've always wondered if an intentional worm burner could be a good shot. I think I found the answer here.

Why?  The conditions are difficult for everyone.  The guys that adjust, and play the best, will prevail.  As it should be.

That doesn't mean it can't cross over at some point.

Too much severe weather brings in luck not skill.

If the game becomes so unlike a typical golf game then it becomes a new type of game - some kind of WIND BALL.

Farce is probably a good word.

True.  When the course becomes unplayable.  That's not happening here though.

The guys who are playing relatively well probably disagree.

I enjoy seeing good players having to get creative.  Sorry, I don't consider tough, even really tough conditions a farce.  As long as the course itself is playable, let em play.

Actually, there was an 88 yard par 3 and at least one guy hit an 8 iron into it. :)

One of the leaders yesterday hit driver off the deck on his opening tee shot. (Hooked it into the bushes and made double though, so maybe it wasn't such a great idea :P)

Seems like this would just give them all a lot of good prep for the British Open, no? :)

Also nobody carries 32 balls. Are you allowed to restock during the game?
